We would use this app quite frequently, though not all oysters are listed. However, since one of the recent iOS updates, this app no longer works! Most of the oysters I eat and would like to rate are nowhere to be seen on here. Like ever. Let's be real- someone obsessed enough to have an oyster app on their phone doesn't need a description of Malpeque or Beau Soleil... But I just ate a Bagaduce River oyster from the great state of Maine and I can't rate it because it's not there. ### 3/5 — Good, but plenty of room for improvement *2011-02-21, version 1.02* Oysterpedia hits the spot for oyster lovers, but there is plenty of room for improvement. The database contains information mostly regarding oysters in the Northeast US and Canada, but has some data on West coast oysters and a few varieties in the Southeast US. However, there are dozens of oyster varieties in the Southeast that cannot be found in Oysterpedia, and I fear this might be the case in other regions as well. Mermaid Holding is based out of the Northeast, so it makes sense that they know the most about this area's harvest. However, the app could have so much more depth, it just saddens me to imagine them not broadening the database with more varieties. There's also a few varieties of West Coast oysters that are misfiled in the East Coast list. I'd recommend that Mermaid Holding also include a map (or incorporate Google Maps) so users can browse oyster varieties by location. Just mark the origins of each variety with a "tack" and have a pop-up with the oyster variety's name and maybe some supplemental information. Overall, I can only award the current version 3 stars out of 5. Plenty of room for improvement; I love the premise and I hope we see it happen. ### 1/5 — No Longer Functions *2011-02-04, version 1.02* As a server unfamiliar with the many different oysters that keep landing on the menu I found the lite version helpful and a talking piece amongst the staff. Informative and good looking, the software's form and content melded near perfectly. Now that I've bought the paid version and upgraded to 1.02, the app just hangs, never opening. Now it’s just a small glossary of vocabulary that is used for describing each oyster. It’s also an advertisement for their restaurants. It’s a real shame. You rock my world. ### 5/5 — Lovely App for Oyster Fans *2012-07-08, version 1.02* This is a very handy and nicely-designed reference guide containing pics and info on the most popular oysters from the East and West coasts of the U.S. To the users complaining about there not being enough oysters in the database -- firstly, this app has all the major oysters that a diner will likely run into when eating out; secondly, the app is a promotional tool for the nice little NYC seafood restaurant that produced it; and, lastly, it's free. So, instead of complaining, let's be grateful that someone created a useful free app. ### 5/5 — Love this app *2011-01-16, version 1.01* I feel more like an oyster expert with this app!!! ### 4/5 — Huzzah? Some suggestions. *2016-11-07, version 1.02* I'm an oyster connoisseur--I sleep with a few inside my pillowcase every night--and yet I always forget what kind of oyster I've availed myself of that day. I do wish there was a "smell" function so I could identify the oysters based on smelling their shells afterward. Is this too much to ask for? Also, I second (and third) the other reviews about the desire for a "note" function. I prefer to take notes on my phone since paper gets soggy when I'm eating oysters. This makes me think there should be an oyster-drying app--Huzzah, that's a cracking good idea! Thirdly, and fourthly, I would like the option to review these oysters raw (as is), but also Rockefeller, steamed, etc. so I know which ones for which options--a community forum, maybe? Also, it's very rare that the app recognizes which oyster I'm eating when I rub that oyster on my screen. This seems a very basic feature. In conclusion, I'm concerned this app serves neither the oyster-neophytes nor veterans. There's nothing like it anywhere on App Store but I wish instead of just "rating" function, developer could 1) add button/ counter to keep count of how many times you have a specific oyster; 2) at which restaurant where you had it; 3) date of tasting; 4) notes section; 5) most importantly, update w/ info of new oysters & others around the world!! This app has possibilities. You just need to widen them. Very attractive design and easy to navigate. The largest issues I have with this app is the database needs to be updated. The oyster lists need to be expanded to include the numerous other oysters of North America.
