## What is PairLingo?

PairLingo isn't a template flashcard app — it's built to learn any language pair, at your own pace, with your own words.

What actually sets it apart:

FOUR WAYS TO PRACTISE
Match words in two columns, type the translation from memory, hear a word and type what you
understood, or flip flashcards and rate yourself. Matching trains recognition, typing and
listening train recall, and cards let you grade each word on a four-step scale — which is
what lets the review schedule tell "barely knew it" apart from "knew it instantly".

TRULY ANY LANGUAGE PAIR
Not just English-Hungarian. Combine any two languages — Spanish-Japanese, German-Russian,
whatever you're learning. Pick from 24 curated languages for manual entry, or import a CSV
for virtually unlimited language combinations.

SMART CSV IMPORT, NOT JUST "UPLOAD"
Most similar apps just read the file. PairLingo detects when a word's translation changed
(typo fix), warns you about accidentally-duplicated groups with similar names, and lets you
decide row by row how to resolve conflicts — update the existing word, or add it as new.

PHOTO IMPORT, NO TYPING NEEDED
See a word list in a textbook? Just take a photo. PairLingo recognizes the words and groups
straight from the picture — entirely on your device, nothing ever uploaded — and shows you
exactly what it found before anything's added, so you can fix any mistake first.

REAL PRIVACY, NOT JUST A PROMISE
No backend server. No account required. No ads, no tracking code. Your words sync across
your own devices through your own iCloud account — the developer has no technical way to
access your data, even if they wanted to.

REAL SPACED REPETITION
Not a fixed "wrong answers" bin — PairLingo calculates its own review schedule per word.
Words you know well come back less often; tricky ones return sooner. Tap any card to
hear it read aloud in its native pronunciation, too.

A GENUINELY MULTILINGUAL INTERFACE
Not just the content — the app's own interface is available in 6 languages (English,
Hungarian, German, Spanish, French, Italian), switchable instantly with no relaunch.

IPHONE, IPAD AND MAC
One app for all your Apple devices. On iPad, the topics and review rows flow into a grid that
fills the wide screen; on the Mac, a native app brings a window toolbar, a full menu bar with
keyboard shortcuts and a Settings window. Your words and progress stay in sync between all of
them through your own iCloud account.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.7 — 2026-10-10

What's New:
• PairLingo now runs on iPad: it works in every orientation, the main screen's topics and review rows flow into a grid that adapts to the screen width, and the practice screens use larger type at a comfortable width.
• New: a native Mac app (macOS 14+) — the same purchase, and your data stays in sync with your iPhone and iPad through iCloud. It has a window toolbar, a full menu bar with keyboard shortcuts and a Settings window; for photo import you can open an image file or drop it onto the window.
• A fresh look: meet the app's mascot, a little orange spider! It greets you on the first-launch language picker and on empty screens, and shows up at the end of every round — celebrating a flawless round (in seven different ways) and cheering you on after a slip (in four different ways), cycling through its poses so they don't repeat.
• Fixed a bug where switching the app language could unexpectedly close the screen you had open (e.g. Language Settings).

### 1.6 — 2026-09-29

What's New:
• New import method: photograph a printed word list (e.g. a textbook page), and the app tries to recognize the groups and word pairs from it — recognition runs entirely on your device, and the photo never gets uploaded anywhere. You can always review and correct the result before importing.
• Photo import now also shows a few quick tips for more accurate recognition.
• In Listening mode, tapping "Check" now also reveals the question's word as text, next to the translation — so you see, in both languages, what the app actually pronounced.
• Fixed a bug where a practice round that was opened and immediately closed (with no answers given) could wrongly count its words as "learned" in the statistics.

### 1.5 — 2026-09-23

• New practice mode: "Listening" — instead of seeing the word written out, you only hear it, and have to type the translation based on what you heard. It works like typing mode, just with the question spoken instead of shown.
• You can now add an example sentence to any word — either by hand when editing it, or via CSV import as a fourth column. The sentence appears after you've seen the answer, to help you remember the word in context.
• The A1 and A2 starter word lists now come with an example sentence for each word.
• Fixed a bug where the same word could occasionally appear twice in the same practice round.
• Fixed a bug in matching mode where a correct answer could occasionally be rejected when two different words shared the same translation.

### 1.4 — 2026-09-10

What's New:
• Two new practice modes alongside matching: "Typing", where you enter the translation yourself, and "Cards", where you reveal the answer and rate how well it went. Switch modes at the top of the main screen.
• The four-step rating in card mode ("Didn't know", "Hard", "Knew it", "Easy") steers the review schedule far more precisely than the previous right/wrong signal.
• For typing and cards you can choose which direction to be asked in — or have the app alternate word by word.
• New daily reminder at a time of your choosing. It is a local notification only, with no server behind it.
• The main menu moved to a button in the top-right corner with labelled items, replacing the six icons that were hard to hit and hard to tell apart.
• Typing is more forgiving: where a word has several meanings (separated by a comma, "/" or ";"), any one of them counts on its own, and parenthetical notes don't have to be typed.
• You can now set how many word pairs a round contains (4–10) — fewer words mean bigger, more legible cards.
• Topic rows now show how many of their words you have already learned, and Statistics gained a chart of your last seven days.
• Fully learned topics now get a green checkmark and appear dimmed in the list, making it easier to spot what's still worth working on.
• Fixed a bug where quitting a round partway through could still change words' review scheduling — that now only happens after a completed round.
• Fixed a crash that could occur after many consecutive correct answers on the same word.

### 1.3 — 2026-09-02

What's New:
• Starter word lists are now available at all six CEFR levels (A1–C2), not just one fixed level — and can be imported anytime from the main import menu, regardless of the currently active language pair.
• Hungarian-based starter word lists are now available too (Hungarian–Spanish, Hungarian–German, Hungarian–Portuguese, Hungarian–Italian), not just English-based ones.
• The "Review" section now splits into two separate lists: "Due for Review" (scheduled by spaced repetition) and "Mistaken Words" (words you actually got wrong).
• Faster opening for Language settings, Statistics, and the practice screen.
• On first launch, you can now freely choose both languages (not just paired with English) — a list right there shows which pairs already have a ready-made starter word list.
