## What is Paper Rooms?

Paper Rooms is a free, local-first library for research papers. Not a tool full of features, but a small building full of connected rooms you wander through.

Paste an arXiv link and it lands at an address: a call number, a floor, a nearby shelf. Instead of a list of search results, you get a place. The paper has a coordinate, and around it sit the papers it lives next to.

THE ROOMS

The Circulation Desk. Paste a link and it resolves, or tells you plainly why it can't. No guessing, no upsell, no dead ends dressed up as features.

The Reading Room. Typography first, chrome last. Real margins, real measure, equations and figures rendered cleanly, until you forget there is a screen between you and the page.

The Floor Directory and the Stacks. Addresses, nearby shelves, and the trails you drift along. The scale is visible and the wandering is the point.

Your Private Study. Your saved papers, highlights, notes, and collections, held on your device and belonging to you.

FREE, FOREVER

Not a free trial. Not freemium. There is no plan to upgrade to, no account to make, no ads, and nothing to buy, now or later. Consider it a gift, left out for anyone who wants to read.

PRIVATE BY ARCHITECTURE

Privacy here is not a setting or a promise. It is the shape of the thing. There are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, and no server we run. When you open a paper, the request goes straight from your device to the source. Everything you create stays on your device.

A love letter to libraries, built by one person, for anyone who likes reading something slowly and all the way through.

With thanks to arXiv for its open-access interoperability.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-06-28

Tend your own library. Retire a paper — or a single passage — when it no longer belongs, with a quiet moment to undo if you change your mind. Gather rooms into collections you can name, rename, and rearrange as your reading shifts.

And every library now opens empty: no borrowed shelves, just the rooms you choose to fill. When you want to begin again, Clear the Study and start fresh.

### 1.1 — 2026-06-25

Beyond arXiv. The Circulation Desk now takes far more than preprints — paste a DOI, a journal article, a PubMed Central or PubMed link, a bioRxiv paper, or a Google Scholar result, and it resolves to an address just the same. More of the literature, the same quiet rooms.

Built directly on the open metadata of Crossref and Europe PMC, with no server in between.

### 1.0 — 2026-06-23
