## What is Paperless Less Paper?

Less Paper is a native iOS client for paperless-ngx 3.x and earlier, the self-hosted document archive. It talks directly to your own server, and to nothing else.

FIND ANYTHING
The complete filter set from the web interface, custom fields included: title and content, correspondent, document type, storage path, tags, dates and ASN. Save any filter as a view, then create, edit and reorder your saved views without leaving the app.

EDIT WHERE YOU ARE READING
Fix a title, reassign a correspondent, add tags, notes or custom field values from the document itself. Select several documents and change them together, merge them, or delete them in one go.

READ IT WITH NO SERVER IN REACH
Save a document offline and it is kept on the device in full — the PDF, its notes, metadata and custom fields. The Offline tab reads those stored copies, so it works on a plane, in a basement, or anywhere your server is not. Pull to refresh and only the documents that actually changed are fetched again.

GET DOCUMENTS IN
Send anything on your device to paperless-ngx from the share sheet. Password-protected PDFs are unlocked on import, and the password is kept in the keychain so the next document from the same source opens without asking. The inbox then says what became of each one: File Tasks lists every import — which finished, which are still running, and which failed and why — and a failure can be dismissed once you have dealt with it.

BUILT FOR REAL SETUPS
Connect as many servers as you like and switch between them. Sign in with a password, or with the single sign-on provider your server is configured with. Client certificates, custom HTTP headers and reverse proxies such as Authelia are all supported. A restricted account works too: the app follows your user's permissions and simply does not show what you may not do. When something does go wrong, a local error log — with anything credential-shaped redacted out of it — is there to read and share, and nothing leaves the device unless you send it.

KEEP THE ARCHIVE TIDY
Create, rename and delete tags, correspondents, document types and storage paths, and set ownership and permissions on any document. Restore anything you deleted from the trash, or empty it for good.

Works with every paperless-ngx from 2.15.3 to 3.x. Universal: iPhone and iPad — on iPad the document opens in a column beside the list rather than covering it.

My family has been using Paperless-ngx for about a year, and it’s wonderful. It’s installed on a home network server (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) and we use web clients and iOS / iPadOS apps for adding and browsing our documents. The server is backed up with an online / offsite subscription. It’s a life-saver. Super-quick scanning and categorization by all members of our family, with preset rules to simplify the process. And very fast and easy searching and retrieval. Combined with offsite backup, it’s the best of all worlds: easy, fast document archiving and secure, safe long-term storage.

### 3.0.7 — 2026-09-26

Search now finds more than documents, and Favorites is now Offline.

• Type in the search field on the Documents list and the matches appear grouped — documents, saved views, tags, correspondents, document types, storage paths and custom fields. Tap a document to open it, or tap anything else to filter the list by it.
• Choosing a result puts the keyboard away but keeps what you typed, so tapping the field again brings the same results back.
• Search terms are no longer written to the diagnostics log. That covers the advanced search too, which had been recording them since long before this release.

• The Favorites tab is now called Offline, which is what it always did: keep chosen documents on this device so they can be read with no connection. Saving one is “Save offline” now, under a download arrow rather than a heart. Everything you had already saved is still there, and if you had set a swipe action to Favorite it still works — it is called Offline now.
• The Offline list has the same search field as the Documents list, instead of the system one that sat above it.

• Failed imports are counted on the button itself, and a failed row shows the server's own reason in full — a document that hit a duplicate check or tripped a workflow no longer just quietly disappears.
• Swipe a task away once you have dealt with it, or dismiss the ones on screen in one go. Tapping a row opens the document the import created.

An app that follows your account's permissions, a smaller tip, and a diagnostic log that says more while revealing less.

• Controls your account has no permission to use are now hidden: editing, deleting, importing, bulk actions, notes, trash and the pickers in forms only appear when the server would actually allow them.
• Fixed: a restricted account could not add a server at all when it lacked permission to read users. The app now asks the server what you may do in a way every account is allowed to.
• The tip jar has a new smallest tip, and the tips are now sorted by price.
• A row in Settings for rating the app — and after a successful import or a tip, the app may occasionally ask for a review on its own. Apple limits how often.
• The diagnostic log no longer records server hostnames, and now notes the app version, connections and cache updates — so a shared log tells the story without telling on your server.

Servers that would not add, custom fields that went missing, and search in more places.

• Fixed: a server could refuse to be added at all, answering only that the data could not be read. A saved view with no sort field was enough to cause it, and so was a saved view using a filter this app did not recognise.
• Fixed: one custom field with an unusual select option made every custom field disappear.
• Saved views using the simple title search and simple text search filters now work.
• Search the lists in Settings: correspondents, custom fields, document types, PDF passwords, saved views, storage paths, tags and trash.
• Diagnostics is now reachable before a server has been added, so a problem on the very first screen can still be reported.
