## What is Particle Chimes?

Particle Chimes is an instrument for your iPhone and iPad designed to be touched, with sounds ranging from gentle strings to glass bells to cathedral organs. Press Auto and start an evolving melody in the key of your choice. Select visualizations like ink swirls, starfields, or koi ponds to match your mood. Play notes or strum the performance ribbon to create a wide range of tones. It's easy to capture your performances with high resolution audio and video exports to share with friends. Set the sleep timer to relax and drift off to your own personal lullaby, or keep it playing for focus time. Connect the app to your TV or projector and create your own personal interactive art installation.

Particle Chimes is a generative synthesizer for iPhone and iPad. The sound is the real Rings physical-modeling resonator and Clouds granular engine, the same open-source Mutable Instruments algorithms inside two of the most-loved Eurorack modules ever built. Play with the built-in performance ribbon or with external keyboards and sequencers within your favorite AUv3 host such as GarageBand or AUM.

THE RIBBON
Drag across the textured ribbon and notes ring out in whatever scale and tuning you've set: 23 scales from pentatonic to Hungarian minor, tunings from standard 12-tone to Just, Pythagorean, and Bohlen-Pierce, or your own imported .scl file. Hold a note and scrub to pull it into a granular cloud. Use the built in effects like reverb and delay to add depth to any patch. 

AUTO
Turn on AUTO and Particle Chimes will begin playing a unique evolving melody: a Turing-machine sequencer, an arpeggiator, and a slow drift generator all help to create soundscapes that don't become repetitive.

Every visualizer skin is drawn live from what's actually playing. Five are free to start, including Signal Flow, a living schematic that shows you how the instrument works underneath. The rest open up with Studio.

Particle Chimes loads as an instrument plugin (AUv3) in AUM, Loopy Pro, and Logic for iPad. Play it from a MIDI keyboard or a host piano roll, parameters exposed for automation and MIDI learn, locked to your host's tempo.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-08-12

Studio's full one-page layout now fits more iPads. If Studio was showing you the tabbed view with room to spare, you get the whole patching surface on one screen now.

Video export: exported files now carry audio every desktop editor reads correctly, and there is a new MP4 option for smaller, more compatible files.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-08-11

TONE for the cloud. A new knob in the CLOUD section tilts the granular texture darker or brighter. It shapes only the output: the recorded buffer keeps its full bandwidth and the feedback path is untouched. Hosts can automate it.

MPE MIDI out. The plugin now sends MPE for every note it plays: the AUTO sequencer, the performance ribbon, the keyboard strip, and visualizer strums. Microtuning carries through. Point it at another synth and layer the two.

New knob look. Value arcs are now grooves machined into the panel with a copper fill, easier to read at a glance.

Smoother in hosts. Studio at full screen inside AUM could get sluggish, especially with LFOs mapped. This build is much lighter on the UI thread.

Mirror External Display. A new toggle in the visualizer picker. Off keeps the dedicated clean visualizer on the external screen; on mirrors your device instead, for demos and teaching.

Fixes: on Apple Silicon Macs, opening the preset browser could crash the app and the plugin window could open blank in Logic; both fixed. Flow skins no longer break down into a grid pattern. The Studio waveform now draws both stereo channels, so notes no longer vanish from the display at higher polyphony. The plugin registers correctly as an instrument in AUv3 hosts.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-08-06

Fixes knobs and faders that barely responded to a trackpad or mouse drag. If you play Particle Chimes on an iPad with a Magic Keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, controls now sweep their full range in a single gesture, the same as they always have under touch. Fine adjustment is unchanged: press and hold a control briefly before you move it.

Also fixed: importing Scala .scl tuning files. The importer wrongly rejected files saved with Windows line endings or older text encodings, which covers most scale packs you can download. They load now.
