### 4/5 — Really good app… but

*2026-03-09, version 2.0.2*

This is a really terrific app. I’ve used it to design fairisle and cable cardigans. It gives you charts, instructions and printouts. It would be even better if you could copy patterns or sections between one project and the next. It would also be great to be able to flip on the horizontal as well as the vertical. I know this wouldn’t work with cables or lace but surely it could easily be a feature within the colourwork section? What do you say developers… worth a try???

### 4/5 — Almost there

*2024-10-16, version 2.0.2*

easy to use on iPad and desktop, but lacks a few features:

I would like to be able to make multiple charts in one project so that I can have a new blank page or duplicate a current chart and make changes
and/or
copy a project and give it a new name.

It would also be helpful if I could select a range on a chart and use the delete stitch key to "batch" clear a section of the chart.

### 4/5 — Almost perfect

*2023-09-09, version 2.0.1*

This app is almost perfect. I use this for almost every knitting project, because I can't just knit a pattern as written! I have a few very minor quibbles, but I haven't found anything better. Sometimes it crashes when I am trying to undo something. It would be cool if we could specify if the boxes in the grid were square or more rectangular, which would give a better idea of how the pattern would look knitted up. I also wish I could flip a pattern vertically (over the x axis) as well as horizonally. But other than those few things, this program is Fabulous.

### 4/5 — Good app - could be improved

*2022-03-04, version 2.0.1*

I’m enjoying using this app - particularly in conjunction with KnitCompanion. I’ve used it to create charts, colour and stitch based and despite it slowing down a bit when the charts are large, it does work well. But, for me, it has one particular restriction that I find annoying: you can’t change the grid to reflect the shape of your stitches. It’s very rare that a stitch is square; as on knitting graph paper, stitches are usually squished a bit, being wider than they are tall, and this varies from pattern to pattern. But importantly, if you’re doing colour work - and particularly if you’re doing intarsia or pictorial knitting - being able to create a workable pattern is hampered by the grid being unrelentingly ‘square’. Allowing the grid to reflect the stitches would really improve this app.

Still waiting (a year later) for something to be done about the ability to change ratios for fields so that you can adapt to the shape/size of your stitches.

Also hoping that the ability to replicate a design, either by copying and pasting the whole field into a new file, or by renaming a design and thus creating a new file with the same design. Having to photograph and then reinsert each stitch in a complicated lace pattern, when you just want to try out a slightly altered design, without losing the original, would be a definite improvement. Please get on it app designers! Thanks.

### 2/5 — Less Functions than excel

*2021-12-17, version 2.0.1*

With the free version, you're restricted to a handful of stitch symbols.

You're not able to use the colour function, multiselect tool, or really anything other than click and drag.

My main gripe is there's no way to make the grid bigger than 30X30 stitches. Many of my patterns are much, much larger

### 4/5 — Pattern Genius is a great app! There is a learning curve.

*2021-06-17, version 2.0.1*

This is a great app. The problem for some of us with this learning curve is we are not all visual auditory learners, some of us are visual/kinesetic which means show me and let me do it.
The “PrettyPink.com site on YouTube helps a lot! Please keep them coming!
Thanks Sally and gang for your great efforts and persistence to solve knitters learning problems.
This is the best app of its type out there, the rest seem to be going defunct.

### 3/5 — Great if only....

*2021-05-14, version 2.0.1*

This is a great app to design with, especially using the chart option. It takes a little time to find some of the hidden gems.... like being able to change the chart colours if you want to. Useful if you want six shades of pink :). There are two things that would make this a top rated app for me, be able to change the name of your creation if you want to - once it’s named it’s set in stone, be warned. Secondly, the ability to print out your design. Not everyone wants to sit with an electronic device on for hours on end.

### 4/5 — Latest upgrade bug?

*2021-02-21, version 2.0.1*

Pattern Genius is by far my favorite knitting app. However since the latest upgrade I am having a problem. I cannot color or change the color of the stitches. The chart takes a long time to save to the app and there is an error message that says the chart is unable to sync. Charts do not sync between the app on my iPad and the app on my phone.

I hope this can be fixed.

### 3/5 — It’s good if you don’t wanna do color work

*2020-09-19, version 1.5.5*

I only gave it 3 stars because it’s a good app for creating basic designs like lace or cables, but at least let us have some basic colors with the free version.

### 2/5 — Good design, too many crashes and loss of work

*2020-08-15, version 1.5.5*

I really wanted this to work. Started playing with it and was thrilled. Then the crashes started. The crashes started coming seconds a part from each other, and when they happen, they often delete the latest work (if you are lucky). On a few occasions the crash deleted pattern entirely. Now I’m trying in small efforts, maybe that will help.

A few notes.
Losing the projects entirely happened when I had iCloud sync on. It didn’t help.

The only place with a “save” button to use at all is in the chart set up, and it looks as if that may only save the chart settings, not the work on the chart.

All the features that make the app cool are only available by subscription. Know that going in.

### 4/5 — Generally a great app for designing

*2020-07-07, version 1.5.5*

I have just downloaded this app as I love knitting lace & colour work. Have just tried it for a couple of basic lace patterns, the only thing that would give it 5 stars for me would be the ability to change the colour of the lines to demarcate the pattern repeats. So to be able to draw say a red line would give it 5 stars

### 3/5 — Potentially very good.

*2020-05-11, version 1.5.5*

This potentially is a great app, but I can’t add stitches to it. As a beginner you look through knitting books for patterns but can’t add them to the stitches. It needs a better manual too. So can’t really recommend as the must have.

### 2/5 — Program keeps crashing

*2020-02-23, version 1.5.5*

I am really struggling to produce patterns, the program no longer allows you to copy patterns and has crashed 8 times today loosing 2 days of work.
It was good but now no longer worth using

### 3/5 — Good design, lots of crashes

*2019-08-26, version 1.5.3*

Backing up isn’t working, and the crashes are deleting my work.

### 3/5 — Update Ruined This

*2019-06-22, version 1.5.2*

I have had this program for over a year and have paid to use the upgrade since first downloading it. Prior to this latest “update,” the only time I had to worry about the crashing was when using the paint brush over a large area.

This app was recently updated and now crashes on near everything I do. From a simple small pattern to a large complex pattern. Whatever you changed in this update (this past week), please undo it so I can go back to only the expected crash of overusing the paint brush.

Thank you,

An Avid Designer.

### 2/5 — Is there a trial version

*2019-01-26, version 1.3.1*

I wanted to try this since it was created by the same people that created knit companion but it doesn’t let you try anything without purchasing so I really can’t tell if it is something that I would like or not. Disappointed because I really like the other app. Looks like it might be a nice app.

### 3/5 — Dissapointed

*2018-08-04, version 1.3.1*

I loved this app until I discovered that it doesn't allow you to print your chart or to store your charts anywhere except Dropbox. It's pricy and requires yearly fees, and Dropbox requires fees for full usage.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Pattern Genius loading issue

*2026-03-11, version 2.0.2*

My iPad Pro is updated to the newest version of iPad iOS 26.3.1.. However since this update my Pattern Genius app will not open. It starts but then immediately closes. It would be great if you could address this problem.

### 1/5 — Useless buggy

*2022-08-10, version 2.0.1*

Wanted to use the app and it instantly asked me to pay to use the main feature. Just make it a paid app...

### 1/5 — Ugh

*2022-04-02, version 2.0.1*

I’ve had this for a couple of years. I use it on and off but each time I use the paintbrush it forces the app to close. It’s annoying to put a p for each and every box one by one because the one that does it all together crashes the app. I’ve emailed the developers before. I was told to make sure everything was updated which I did and it still crashed my app. I would love this app if it wouldn’t crash.

### 1/5 — Must pay for basic functionality

*2021-02-01, version 2.0.1*

The app should not be 'free'. Anything I tried to do in the app was behind a paywall.

In addition, the interface is confusing and not optimised for macos

### 1/5 — Desperation makes me use it.

*2020-05-20, version 1.5.5*

This app needs work. Sadly, it’s the best for iPad, but that’s only because the competition is worse.
It’s got a host of issues:
❌Crashes constantly. It gets to where i feel a little dread if i have to hit the undo button. Undo makes most crashes.
❌No Apple Pencil support! Doesn’t recognize the pen at all, not for drawing, not for picking a stitch, nothing!
❌Show/hide rulers will change magnification
❌No true stitch/key customization - you can rename the stitches, you can Frankenstein “new” stitches by repurposing supplied stitches, but true custom key/stitch is not there.
❌I haven’t even attempted to have it go from chart to instruction yet. PC charting apps can go from text to chart and back. This one only one way.
😡I had high hopes for this app. I have an iPad Pro w/pencil and wanted to be able to work directly on my charts rather than deal with PC & mouse. Very disappointed.

### 1/5 — Watch out for the strings attached

*2019-06-02, version 1.3.1*

I downloaded it and tried it but found that all but the most basic functions have to be purchased with a subscription fee that is higher than it should need to be for something so buggy. Then I saw who made and realized why. No way would I entrust my money with someone who has a history of yanking useful functions out and charging even more for it.

### 1/5 — Constant crashing!

*2018-10-22, version 1.3.1*

After playing around with the freebie for a few weeks I decided to purchase the whole program. I cannot express how frustrated and disappointed I am in this app. I can’t manage to do anything on it becuz it is constantly crashing on me. Such a waste becuz this probably could be a great help to me, if it worked right. If this problem is not fixed ,I’ll be asking for a refund. Btw,I am using the latest iPad Pro with Apple Pencil.

Ok, so now after attempting to fix this app by deleting it from my iPad and re-adding it via the Apple App Store, it now does not even recognize that I have already paid for ALL of the ad-ons. There is no restore purchase option that I can see. I sent 2 support tickets. One for the constant crashing issue, and now another one for this recharging issue .

It’s been a few days and I have yet to hear from anyone. Seems customer service is MIA, and I have paid $15.99 for an app I cannot use. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth for any future app purchases considering how hard it is to get any issues resolved.

Update 10/22/18 it’s been a few weeks now, and I still have not heard from anyone regarding the issues I am having. The least they could do is add in the restore purchase option. At this point I feel like I have been ripped off!

### 1/5 — Annoying

*2018-08-30, version 1.3.1*

Thought it would help to get my charts done quickly, not so much. Bought full version and tools are not always doing what they are suppose to do. It’s faster drawing by hand. Money wasted! Needs a lot of work to be a satisfying app!

### 1/5 — Really wanted to love it

*2016-08-18, version 1.1.1*

But here's the thing - $21.99 a year to have the features that others include for free? It's called robbery and I'm totally not shocked that this is the first review you've received. Likely you've had zero uptake as a result of this inappropriate pricing strategy. Good luck!

### 1/5 — Can't try it without buying !!!

*2016-02-08, version 1.1.1*

What good is an app if you can't give it a "test drive" before you commit to a subscription...!!!????

What a waste of space!!!

### 5/5 — And the clouds rolled back, and the angels sang...

*2020-11-13, version 2.0*

Is this the best charting app available?
Yes
Did I buy an iPad just so I could get it?
Yes
Am I overjoyed that now I can also have it on my Mac?
Why yes, yes I am.

I've bought the annual subscription each year, and developments like this let me know that it's worth every penny and then some.

I especially appreciate the decision to let the subscription carry over from iOS to Mac.

### 5/5 — A Must Have App

*2019-07-01, version 1.5.3*

Love and appreciate the NEW (1.5.3) app capabilities, thank you for all the hard work!!! Huge leap forward, in capabilities and speed enhancements.

Had an opportunity to use new app to duplicate and alter a rather large chart originally created in the old app. WOW, what a huge improvement! On top of all the listed upgrade features, everything runs and redraws so much faster now. Use this app on an iPad Pro 10.5, iPad Mini 4 and iPhone X. No crashes, not even when tapping the back/undo icon.

Adore both apps (PG and NG-KC). Very thankful they both exist!! Learned to knit using these apps, don’t think i’d have had the patience or fortitude to learn otherwise.

### 5/5 — Invaluable

*2019-07-01, version 1.5.3*

I have been using PG for years and love it. Being a chart person this gives me the ability to build my own that I can then pop into knitCompanion. The recent improvements are icing on the cake, the tools are so awesome and real time savers. I have designed charts for my own designs also which is very satisfactory. I say often that working in PG is better than “Prozac” for me, Zen time.😻

### 5/5 — Love the app. Any chance of a module for crochet?

*2019-01-14, version 1.3.1*

Great app love all the features and how easy it is to use. I’d also love to see the functionality extended to crochet too :)

### 5/5 — App crashes every time I hit undo

*2018-10-17, version 1.3.1*

I really want to love this app, but every time I hit undo the app crashes and I lose a big chunk of my work. I have learned to never hit undo! For $16 per year, this shouldn’t happen.

### 5/5 — What I've been waiting for

*2015-06-26, version 1.1*

The app was upgraded today and now includes more cable options and Japanese stitches, as well as alpha-numeric symbols. In addition, repeats can be edited to have non-vertical edges. This is a highly useful and powerful app.
I love this app. I've used a cross stitch program and Excel in the past to chart my knitting. This is much better. I love that I can customize the abbreviation and written instructions for each symbol. I love that I can customize the symbols and save more than one customization for each symbol.
Integration with DropBox is automatic and completely seamless. The PDF output works great with every program I've tried.
Being able to work on my designs where ever I am on my iPad has given my imagination wings.

### 5/5 — Really REALLY Excellent App

*2015-03-22, version 1.0.1*

I posted this review in Ravelry and I am reposting it here.

I have been searching for a charting app in order to convert my written instructions to charts.
PatternGenius IS the BEST! It has been surprisingly intuitive. And the instructions are well written and easily accessible during the process of creating a chart.
I was concerned about the yearly subscription price but considered the ~ $15.99 price reasonably and comparable to a quality magazine subscription.
Thanks for creating an amazingly robust charting app for fiber enthusiasts.
I love It
CherriLH

### 5/5 — Oh my! So much fun.

*2015-03-21, version 1.0.1*

I can't believe how easy this app is to use. The spinny things for menus are so cool.

Love that the app is free to try some before I have to spend any money. A few ads is totally worth it at first. Everything can't be 100% free.

Off to re-charting some patterns that really need it.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2015-03-21, version 1.0.1*

This app is for anybody who designs knitwear, or just wants to make their existing patterns easier to use. The app is very intuitive and easy to navigate through. And if you get stuck, the built in help is right there. It is sooo easy to create charts and generate PDFs. And it works seamlessly with KnitCompanion! Knitters now have the best of all possible worlds!

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2015-03-21, version 1.0.1*

This app is amazing, I love it. It is so simple to use. I can now make and/or redo charts for my knitting projects quickly, easily and paperlessly.
Works seamlessly with KnitCompanion.
Way to go Create2Thrive Team.
