## What is PDF Squeeze?

PDF Squeeze is a private PDF compressor, reader, editor, and signing tool for iPhone and iPad.

Make large PDFs smaller, ask questions about what’s inside, sign documents, mark up pages, and organize your files — all on your device.

ASK YOUR PDF ANYTHING

Open a contract, lease, manual, research paper, or any other PDF and ask questions in plain language:

“What’s the cancellation policy?”

“When does this renew?”

“What did they agree to pay?”

PDF Squeeze answers with page references you can tap to jump directly to the source. Check the original wording yourself instead of relying on an answer without context.

AI answers run entirely on your device. Devices with Apple Intelligence use the system model. Other compatible devices can add an optional on-device model. Your documents are not uploaded to a server.

Scanned, photographed, and faxed documents work too, thanks to on-device OCR.

SIGN WITHOUT PRINTING

Sign with your finger, or type your name and choose a handwriting style.

Your signature is stored as strokes and letterforms instead of a photograph, so it stays sharp at any zoom and adds almost no extra file size.

Signatures are embedded directly into the PDF page rather than added as a floating annotation. They remain part of the document when you compress it or share it with someone else.

MARK UP LIKE PAPER

Highlight important passages, draw freehand, and add text boxes that you can resize to fit your page.

Made a mistake? Undo your changes all the way back.

COMPRESS WITHOUT THE BLUR

PDF Squeeze starts with a vector-preserving compression pass whenever possible, keeping text crisp and selectable.

Pages are only re-rendered when doing so actually reduces the file size. Your compressed PDF will never be larger than the original.

HIT AN EXACT FILE SIZE

Need to meet an email limit or upload portal requirement?

Use Target Size and choose 1 MB, 2 MB, 5 MB, 10 MB, or 25 MB. PDF Squeeze searches for the best visual quality that fits just under your chosen limit.

If a target cannot be reached, PDF Squeeze tells you honestly and produces the smallest file possible.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE

Drag the Before & After slider across any page to compare the original document with the compressed version.

See the result for yourself.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.5 — 2026-09-07

Compress several documents at once. Tap Select in your library, pick the files you want, and compress them in one run

See what each file saved. The list shows each document as it goes: which one is being worked on, how far along the run is, and what every file saved when it's done. Tap any one for its own before and after.

Do more with a selection. Merge the documents you picked into one PDF, share the compressed copies together, or remove them from the library.

Plus bug fixes and reliability improvements.

### 3.4 — 2026-09-02

FILLED-IN FORMS CAN BE READ

A form someone has filled in — a lease, a notice, an application — can now answer questions about itself. What gets typed into a PDF form is kept apart from the page's own text, so the app never saw any of it: you could ask who the landlord was and be told the form doesn't say, with the name printed across the top of it. Those answers are now read, kept together with the caption printed beside them, and looked at for every question.

If you have asked a document questions before, its index rebuilds itself the first time you open it after updating. It takes a few seconds and happens once.

NOW ON MAC, AT NO EXTRA COST

PDF Squeeze is on the Mac, and your purchase already covers it. Unlock it once and it is unlocked everywhere. Requires macOS 15 or later, on a Mac with Apple silicon.

### 3.3 — 2026-08-31

• PDF Squeeze is now available on iPad.
• Ask questions about any PDF and jump from each answer to its source page.
• Sign with your finger or type your name and choose a handwriting style.
• Mark up pages with highlights, drawings, and resizable text boxes.
• Compare original and compressed pages with Before & After.
• Choose an exact target size from 1 MB to 25 MB.
• Added on-device OCR, full-text search, PDF merging, and a faster page organizer.
All processing stays on your device.

### 3.2 — 2026-08-29

READS THE REST OF YOUR PAPERWORK

Scanned pages were read as English no matter what was printed on them. Now the language is detected automatically, across more than twenty — Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, and most of Western and Central Europe.

Everything built on reading a scan improves with it. Asking a document questions, full-text search, and PDF to Text all now work on scanned paperwork that isn't in English.

FAIRER FREE QUESTIONS

A free question is spent on an answer, not on an attempt. A question that fails or comes back empty costs nothing, and neither does retrying it.

SMALLER BACKUPS

The search index built when you ask a document questions has moved out of backed-up storage. It rebuilds itself in seconds, so it no longer takes up room in your iCloud backup — and your documents' text no longer travels with it.

SMOOTHER PROGRESS

Progress bars during compression and conversion no longer jump backwards on long documents.

### 3.1 — 2026-08-28

CONVERT

A new tab, and four conversions that run start to finish on your iPhone.

PDF TO TEXT
Pull the words out of any document. Scanned pages are read with on-device OCR, and you can mark where each page begins or leave the text unbroken.

PDF TO IMAGES
Every page as its own picture — PNG, JPEG, HEIC or TIFF, at screen, standard or print density, with a quality dial for the lossy formats.

IMAGES TO PDF
Photos and pictures, one per page, rotated upright and fitted to the page. Send the finished PDF straight to your library to read, sign, mark up or compress.

CHANGE IMAGE FORMAT
Between PNG, JPEG, HEIC and TIFF in any direction. Rotation is baked into the pixels, so the result looks right in every app, not just this one.

Nothing is uploaded and nothing is left behind: each conversion works in its own scratch space and clears it on the way out.

Description — one new section (drop it in above TEXT STAYS SHARP), plus two edited lines. Full text is in AppStore/metadata.md; total is 3540/4000.

CONVERT WITHOUT LEAVING THE APP
Four conversions that actually finish, all on device.

PDF to Text — pull the words out of any document. Scanned pages are read with on-device OCR.
PDF to Images — every page as its own picture, in PNG, JPEG, HEIC or TIFF, at screen, standard or print density.
Images to PDF — photos laid out one per page, rotated upright and fitted to the page. Add the result to your library and read, sign or compress it like anything else.
Change Image Format — between PNG, JPEG, HEIC and TIFF in any direction, with rotation baked in so the result is upright everywhere.

No upload step, no watermark, no sign-up, no daily limit.

The opening line changed from "In 3.0 it also reads them…" to "Now it also reads them, answers questions about them, signs them, and converts them", and PRIVATE BY DESIGN now leads with "Compression, conversion, OCR, signatures, and AI answers".

Review notes — first paragraph is new, and the AI paragraph's backup claim is now true rather than aspirational:

All processing is on-device. There are no servers, no accounts, and no analytics.

WHAT'S NEW IN 3.1: a Convert tab — PDF to text (with on-device OCR), PDF pages to PNG/JPEG/HEIC/TIFF, images to a PDF, and image format conversion. Every conversion is Core Graphics, ImageIO, PDFKit and Vision; no network is involved and no new permission is requested. Images are chosen through the system photo picker, which runs out of process, so the app is never granted photo-library access. Inputs and results live in a per-screen temporary folder that is deleted when you leave the screen, and any folder left by an interrupted run is swept at the next launch. TO TEST: Convert tab → any row → add a file or photo → tap the action button → Share.

AI FEATURE — HOW IT WORKS: on devices with Apple Intelligence the app uses the system Foundation Models framework (no download). On devices without it, the user may optionally download open-weight model files (~1 GB) from a public model host; these are data assets loaded by the MLX framework, not executable code, and are stored in Application Support, marked excluded from iCloud backup. If the user declines the download, the feature degrades to on-device passage search and still works. No document content, question text, or user identifier is ever transmitted — the network is used only to fetch the model file.
