## What is Peerzle?

What is Peerzle

Have one-on-one anonymous conversations, browse wellness content, or connect with your community resources. Peerzle is a platform to relieve the daily struggles of life through on-demand 20-minute chats.

Feeling homesick? Stressed about grades? Going through a tough breakup? We help you find the best match in your network by connecting you with peers based on shared experiences. From there, you can feel comfortable talking through your struggles, knowing that you are talking to someone who has experienced similar issues.

Use Peerzle however you'd like. If you are having a difficult day and want to talk about it, request a chat. If you enjoy the euphoric feeling of helping others, turn on your notifications and join a conversation whenever you receive a match. However, you don't have to do both.

College can be tough, but you are not alone. Peerzle allows you to work together with your peers to promote a culture of wellness on your campus while breaking down the stigmas and barriers that block people from seeking help.

Peerzle is a community for casual conversations about everyday struggles and is not a solution to severe mental health issues or disorders. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency, contact emergency services (911).

*Remain anonymous while keeping a personal human connection by choosing an avatar and a community-friendly username from countless options.

Why this type of "talking about your problems" helps.

Your brain (and even your body) can get a lot out of talking through problems. In fact, research from U.C.L.A suggests that putting your feelings into words can diminish the response of the amygdala, a part of the brain responsible (among other things) for emotional responses, including fear, anxiety, and aggression. This is why, as time goes on, you can overcome stress by talking about your experiences with peers.

For example, if you are homesick while at school, your daily life can be emotionally overwhelming. However, as you spend more time at your campus and talk through your issues with peers and friends, these feelings of anxiety and fear of being away from home can start to subside.

Nothing will automatically fix these issues and make you instantly healthy and happy, but just like exercising and eating better, it can contribute to your overall well-being over time. More importantly, it can help you handle your emotions more effectively in the future by helping you understand why you feel the way you do.

### 3/5 — Interesting concept but execution is sending mixed messages

*2022-08-19*

I ran into Peerzle at a college fair and it looked interesting but unfortunately a lot of what it has to offer is disorganized. The UI, art, and general design is beautiful but I had no idea it was geared at college students since the age rating on the app store is 12+. It does mention something briefly in the description but is not visible at all unless you are looking for it (it's not in any of the art, promos, etc). I think the idea of connecting with like minded peers going through similar issues is cool, but I'm concerned that it might create codependency among users as well as place unnecessary burdens on users to check in or stay on the app. (For example, the profile section has a "time spent helping others" tracker which seems more like a marketing tactic than a useful feature). I also fear that the anonymity feature may permit potential harassment or abuse of other users, which is exceptionally dangerous on an app with potentially mentally vulnerable individuals. Sometimes it takes just one bad experience to send someone over the edge. Although the Peerzle makes it clear that the app is not a replacement for professional services, it is unclear whether it is a mental health or social app.

**Developer response:** Hi there! Feedback like yours will help us improve the Peerzle experience for everyone, so thank you. We apologize for the miscommunication. Unfortunately, the Age Ratings are determined through a series of information that Apple decided to be 12+. We are working on getting this corrected to 17+ to align with our Terms of Use. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

We understand that life can get busy, and that's why we take measures to ensure that Helpers are not obligated to long-term commitments. For example, we have a 20-minute time limit (with the option to add additional time) on every chat, so the Helper knows exactly how much time to set aside for a helpful conversation. We also have safety measures in place to pick up on concerning language and behavior.

Overall, we believe that talking about your problems helps. And with a large population out there looking for someone to talk to, and an even larger population willing to listen, Peerzle works to facilitate helpful conversations between those two groups. We hope you can find it useful!
