Feedback: The UI is still a bit janky in places. I just wish there was an "idle" screen with a progress bar and album cover on the app itself. The only way to know how long there is remaining in a song is to close my phone and view it from the lockscreen. There doesn't seem to a good place to "rest" your screen in the app itself while music plays. Having my screen open to strictly menus and whatnot makes me feel like I'm going to accidentally bump my screen and select another song. My instinct is to tap on the bottom label where the song name is, and have it "open up" a menu for the song where most of the screen is a sort of exhibit/display of the currently-playing track, and where a mindless touch of the screen won't do anything. It would also be nice to have an in-app genre labelling. I highly recommend this app. ### 5/5 — Decent. *2026-06-01* The app is easy to use and functions well. I really like the EQ presets built that are built in. Please note that you can trial the app before purchasing. The price is high but I hope more features are added in the future. Decoding of lossless files is bit‑perfect and completely transparent. Also has no trouble cleanly sending tracks to my external DAC including my DSD collection. I appreciate that it streams directly from my server without wasting time importing or reorganizing files. No unnecessary features, no distractions just a pure, beautifully executed player that does the most important thing it needs to do and does it flawlessly. The interface is elegant and refined, with just the right amount of polish and tasteful animation to feel premium without being flashy. Hands down the new iOS standard for modern minimalist music playback. ### 5/5 — Amazing Audio Player! *2026-03-03* I’ve been using this audio player for quite some time now and with this newest playlist update I just had to write a review! I used to use VLC, but I was getting too frustrated by the delay between tracks, and this app makes the transitions absolutely seamless. For me, I also love the EQ feature! The fact that there are settings for specific headphones is such a good quality of life feature. And of course, the new playlists are a welcome edition. As someone who lurks on forums, the response from the developer regarding feedback has always been great! Has shuffle , pause , play ,etc. I don’t really like subscription models but I purchased the lifetime pass which was well worth it . But my frustration with an app that doesn’t work properly outweighs that. I also use Doppler, which recognises my library instantly, even when a new album is added. Pentaton doesn’t. When the app does work, it’s an incredible listening experience, but that happens very rarely. Perhaps it’s down to nearly 60 GB of FLAC, AAC and a few MP3 files. But actually, that shouldn’t be a problem – other apps like Doppler manage it too, except that Doppler doesn’t offer Hi-Fi or an EQ. To each their own! ### 1/5 — Not reading any music from the phone *2025-11-25* All my music is in Hi-Res ALAC and I play it from Apple’s native music app. I wanted to try this out - but it loads nothing from my library, which is disappointing! Does not identify DSD files for playback. Not worth $9.99 **Developer response:** Hey there, Pentaton supports DSD streams in .DSF and uncompressed .DFF files. The lifetime license is WAY too overpriced ($55 AUD) for what it is… a LOCAL music file player. I have been wanting for some time to get back to that no-nonsense experience where I can put my own libraries on my own device and use them without curation as a playback device. Apple now goes out of their way to make this use case very difficult. iTunes has messed up my music libraries several times and I have gave up on it. Pentaton is the best app I’ve came across that embraces this standalone use case (I had previously used Foobar2000 and VLC, plus some poorly executed iPod clones). The polished experience the app offers is worth the price - on the phone and with car play it “just works” in the manner I would expect it to. Rather than invest in an expensive standalone player, I think you are better off with a high capacity modern iPhone paired with this app. If you are looking for a well built standalone music player for iOS, you will not go wrong with this app. ### 5/5 — Works well with large libraries *2026-07-07* Love it! Tossed a 35,000 song library at it completely unsorted in a rats nest of poorly named folders using no organization strategy whatsoever and it built out a library with ease. Any chance we could get a shuffle all songs option sometime in the future in CarPlay? It doesn’t seem to be able to handle this size of library on the tracks page in CarPlay and the app crashes sadly. That would put this up there with Poweramp. Great stuff! ### 5/5 — finally *2026-07-01* ive used pentaton now for maybe 6 months? i was looking for a way that i could play the music library i own without having to push through multiple ads and streaming landing pages. ive mostly switched back to my 2009 vid ipod for music, but i did want a "bridge" app (for lack of a better term) that i could play my synced library on my phone also if i wanted to. this has fit the bill perfectly. it has all the most simple and necessary functions of a music player. it looks very similar to the way the original itunes organized things, and easily syncs your itunes music. it is SHOCKING how difficult it is to find something that just lets you play your music, and as far as i can tell, this is the only one. 5 stars. ### 5/5 — Great UI and app *2026-06-11* Might be nice if we have queue features like rearrange etc. Albums is just empty not showing like other apps. It has returned in a lot of ways Since purchasing Pentaton LifeTime there are some Perplexities I have found to notice, even After installing the Latest updates for every supported Apple OS that I have: Tracks can spontaneously pause after being left in the background with the screen off; New users might find there to be more of a learning curve as new features get implemented as opposed to legacy users. A tutorial of some variety might be useful in the future; Relaying semantics and location of Pentaton playlists and their assorted contents between devices via .m3u8 file Seems to persistently fail regardless of playlist size or how symmetrical those devices respective library contents are to each other. It just says sync error and it gets the name of playlists correct while leaving the playlist empty. I don't know precisely causing all of this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯...Just mine perspective though So hope that This helps.
