The accompanying videos and sheet music is unbelievable given the low price of the Pro app. I’ve enjoyed it for years and decided I had to write review. This is one of those rare apps where the love of the music and the subject comes thru. ### 5/5 — Awesome App *2023-03-01* This is an awesome app. You can learn a lot of different patters with the right feel and dynamics. ### 4/5 — Lovely app, informative and very useful. *2023-01-22, version 5.4* It has a wide variety of genres and cultural styles and I use it every day for practise. There are a couple of issues. When slowing down the tempo too much, you get some transient smearing which can blur some of the rhythm's attacks but kept near the original tempo its not too bad. The app now and again can crash when opening another app. When changing another audio app and back it can loose the audio of the current rhythm. By going back to list of rhythms and choosing the same rhythm restores the audio. I hope they continue to expand rhythms that include traditional rhythms from Colombia and other South American countries. I really hope you consider Cumbia, Bullerengue, Mapale, Vallenato Rhythms, and Colombian Pacific Rhythms. I know there’s a world of rhythms but why not make a recommendation. Also, the Dominican section could really use a Bachata rhythm. So I downloaded the app hoping to use it for middleastern percussion sounds. But such a thing does not exist on this app. Since when does the “world” include Latin/Central America and then west Africa? So irritating. ### 1/5 — Licht und Schatten *2017-07-11* Einerseits ist die App liebevoll gestaltet und die eingespielten Instrumente überzeugen sowohl hinsichtlich des Könnens und Klangs. Andererseits ist die App praktisch nur sehr eingeschränkt nutzbar. Am Beispiel Bossa Nova: Es gibt nur einen Loop, im Tempo 110 eingespielt. Jetzt gibt es aber eine ganze Menge Bossa-Songs, die im Tempo stark variieren. Hier haben die App-Entwickler aber nur einen Tempo-Slider eingebaut, der mit dem Tempo auch die Tonhöhe ändert. Das Ergebnis ist inakzeptabel und macht eine praktische Nutzung (für mich als Musiker) nicht möglich => leider teures Lehrgeld! **Developer response:** Hallo Franxon, Vielen Dank für ihre ehrliche wenn auch vielleicht etwas harsche Review. Auf dem App Store Promo Video kann man klar hören dass das Time Stretching eine Änderung der Tonhöhe mit sich bringt, der Käufer weiß also was ihn erwartet. Wir sind allerdings auch nicht mit dieser Lösung zufrieden die wir nur aus Performance Gründen eingebaut haben damit sie auch auf älteren iOS Geräten läuft. Wir arbeiten zur Zeit an einem Update das den Pitch konstant halten wird! ### 2/5 — Time doesn’t line up with metronome…. *2024-06-14* Time doesn’t line up with metronome…. It is like 2 clicks ahead of metronomes markings, it doesn’t line up with prerecorded midi stuff. This thing is off. Also instruments distort when speed up( moderately) , not good. I only used the plena rhythm , it looks ok when starts but need work with distorting instruments and quantize needs work too. Don’t purchase this. **Developer response:** Hello, I’m sorry tho hear that this is the your take on Percussiontutor. First of all we are not using midi at all. When we launched the app 10 years ago we made the choice to only record live performances and make perfect audio loops. Only the metronome click is added. Would be great if you could - send us the list of rhythms that seem off (you only used plena out of > 100 examples? - 2 clicks ahead? No way because … there is NO click in Plena. So? Strange review … - did you use bluetooth or airplay Timestretching works fine when speeding up but I agree it doesn’t work well when slowing down. Would be nice also to contact us before giving a 2 star review for an app that is a reference for many years and hast constantly had excellent reviews. Finally no problem on our side refunding you. Best, PercussionTutor team ### 2/5 — Very poor Brazil section. *2024-06-07, version 5.5* Major Afro rhythms such as Maracatu and Samba Reggae are done really badly. Samba reggae with two surdos just marking the pulse and a drum kit? Maracatu with a drum kit and a whistle? It’s embarrassing. ### 2/5 — External audio interface crashes it. *2022-08-17, version 5.4* As per title. If you use iOS built-in audio then no problem. If you want to use a USB interface then it crashes. Devs are aware and don’t care. —— after 1st dev response—- Not me with Logic . I contacted you 26th Feb 2022, you replied saying reinstall. I contacted you 27th Feb saying it’s the external interface causing crash. You didn’t reply. I’ve tested with 4 usb interfaces now. All work fine with other apps: RME Babyface: crash on select rhythm RME Babyface Pro: crash on select rhythm Focusrite 4i4 gen3: works fine! Motu 828es: no crash but no audio Please test and fix your bugs Thanks. ### 2/5 — What a dissapoinment *2016-09-07, version 4.992* The work made by the musicians to make this samples is great, but this software needs a great and very important improvement , even if you need to raise the cost of price, or inpurchase add on, when changing the speed it changes the pitch and the sound of the instrument , and complete destroy the original tuning of the instrument by this action, please fix this and maybe add a mixer so we can control loudness of each instrument, thanks ### 3/5 — Хорошо, но чуть доработать *2017-12-28* При изменении темпа меняется тон, неудобно. Autre chose. Lorsqu'on modifie la vitesse de tempo, ça influence la hauteur du ton, (ça change la hauteur des sons). Pas de langue Française, juste la langue du colon, ça serait bien de le préciser. Could definitively use a bar going through the sheet music to see in real time where the beats are. ### 5/5 — So worth it! *2025-05-01* Actually has feel, because these are recordings of actual musicians playing all the parts, not midi sequences. Each loop is of ample length - sometimes longer to get some variation when applicable - for instance guanguanco loop is longer to allow quinto doing some soloing and variation. There is the ability to mute each part, change tempo (some digital artifacts of course, since these are recordings being slowed down or sped up, not midi sequences, but very usable). Many other features like every part notated, and videos of musicians playing the parts.
