For to main reasons... Time calc... Made simple... And the other is to calculate the vertical path. The airplane does a good job... But the calculations my instructor teached me make the airplane descent in a more constant path... To do mental calculations and fly the plane may be stressfull sometimes... Here is where the app makes the difference... Using the vertical profile calculator... Using the distance , altitude i have to be in the next waypoint, and glide angle, i get a precise altitude to be passing, and know if im to high or to low. There is a link to it right in the program. More importantly this is what an E6B computer should be... not a series of windows to choose the calculation, but 2 main windows to give you back and forth access that you would have if you were using a wizwheel. I have used at least 4 other apps and online webpages as well, but nothing compares to this. No more picking the "Heading, Ground Speed, WCA" when I meant to pick "Course, Ground Speed, WCA." With this app it's all in the same place and it carries over calculations between windows, which is very smart. The buttons look awkward because the whole screen is just stretched. Yes it is cool that it interfaces like an FMS, but can it do a knots to Mach airspeed calculation....no it can't. Don't waste your money. ### 2/5 — Good try - but more work needed. *2010-02-17* It's OK with a nice looking interface. For flight planning, it works well for the altitude/airpseed functions and the wind calculation, but why is there no leg time calculation funtion? To do this, you have to exit the app an go to the calculator and then you lose all the input data. So you have to write the ground speeds down on a piece of paper and calculate them later which defeats the purpose in my opinion. Also, the LNav page is a little confusing as it requires a 'Bearing' input - not course or track which has been calculated earlier. And inputting LAT/LONG co-ordiantes is fraught with risk. Airline pilots rarely do it due to the errors it tends to generate. If this page is going to be useful in flight, it would need to interface with the GPS function. Otherwise, just use the stopwatch or your on-board GPS. It seems this app is a gadget trying to look like an airliner's Flight Management Computer for PPLs who want to be airline pilots. Semi-useful as a planning aid in it's current format, but needs more funtionality to perform the duties of the whizz-wheel. It would be an unessesary distraction in flight. No complicated menu structure to navigate. Enter distance and time, PFMA tells you ground speed. Enter ground speed and time, PFMA tells you distance. Calculate density altitude, vertical navigation, pivotal altitude (under Rate of Turn), even cold temperature airport altitude corrections.
