### 3/5 — Great! When it works

*2022-09-11, version 1.21*

PROS:
Great when it works. It adds to ambience and it’s easier on my eyes.

CONS:
A recent update (?), or something, caused my unit to stop connecting to the bridge despite me going through the connection process. It will show connected and then report ready to sync and then, almost immediately, say the unit cannot connect to the base and to ensure the devices are on the same network. An orange dot appears then appears (again) under Settings>Switch Hue Bridge. I’m going to reset the configuration by deleting it, uninstalling all apps, removing auth from MeetHue, and pretend it’s a new install. But why is this necessary? I’m a huge fan of this product line despite it’s ridiculous price points and evident stability, but this is taxing.

### 2/5 — It doesn’t make sense

*2022-09-09, version 1.21*

I’ve tirelessly attempted every scenario I can think of to utilize the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box. All have failed. I’ve even contacted customer service on Twitter for assistance. Failed attempts to connect sync box to the Bridge, despite already having the connection with the Hue lights. (So, I know the bridge can be connected to) It seems like terrible support for the app that could clear up many issues. Such a shame considering how much money you have to dump on all the different gadgets to make it all work.

### 2/5 — Play HDMI Synch - Purple Screen

*2022-05-23, version 1.21*

I like the Phillips Hue ecosystem and have several of their lights. I bought the Play HDMI Synch with the Play Gradient Lightstrip, after waiting for several months for Phillips to restock, and when it is working it’s an awesome effect - just as advertised.

However, from the time I’ve purchased it will periodically disconnect, display a purple screen briefly, then white noise, and then will “reconnect” on its own. The “video signal” will continue to play throughout this issue (i.e., video/show won’t stop when it’s disconnected/purple screen/white noise), so it has the additional frustration of missing part of the movie or show being watched.

I’ve been searching for an update or fix for this issue, but have not succeeded in this effort. For the cost, this product should work without the problems I’m experiencing. All the other Hue products have worked without issue. If I were thinking of purchasing this (new buyers), I would wait until Phillips comes out with a fix or new hardware.

Other issues include not being able to switch between different video sources. To fix this, I’ve had to turn off the Play HDMI Synch through the app, wait a few seconds, and then turn the Play HDMI Synch box back on with all the other video sources off (except the one attempting to switch too). This issue is more of an annoyance unlike the video/purple screen issue.

### 2/5 — Disappointed in Connectivity and Perormance

*2021-10-05, version 1.21*

Just purchased when the restock came out in the past week or two. Someone needs to debug the combination of the hardware and software in the sync and the app. The app runs then suddenly disconnects when it decides it isn’t on the same network. However, it wasn’t on the same network from the beginning. Next, rebooting the app completely doesn’t help and gives “busy cycles” as it can’t connect for about a minute before it times out. Over a few minutes, the light synchronization goes off and on sporadically. Normal full bright lights come back on, then dark colors for synch, then back to lights seemingly randomly.

If this box and app functioned ad they should this would be a 4-5 star app and hardware combo.

### 2/5 — Great When It Works

*2021-06-15, version 1.21*

This app and the associated equipment is extremely frustrating. The app itself is thoughtfully designed and laid out but is extremely unreliable.

Expect that at least 25% of the time the app will be unable to connect to the Sync box. The dialogue box that pops up to inform you of this directs you to the app’s settings which are, I have to say, useless. You can toggle WiFi and Bluetooth on and off. That’s pretty much it. If it’s not working you pretty much just have to hope it does at some point.

The lighting effect itself is very enjoyable but I regret buying this in the first place.

### 3/5 — Works Ok but Needs Improvement

*2021-05-06, version 1.21*

Hue box doesnt support any hdmi 2.1 features. Horrible for a product this late in the game. Ten times more horrible than that is it doesnt support the 5g wifi band forcing me on a band that is susceptible to interference and causes video to buffer a lot. It has forced me to thrn on all “smart”. (Dumb) connecting features on my router to resolve. It did that but causes some undesirable effects with my other devices. Wish I could leave my router alone and let everythibg on the 5g band. The Hue box leeps me from being able to do that.

Other than that, the Hue box does everything it is supposed to do pretty well but lags occasionally causing the gradient on my play strip to be a bit choppy. Its pretty good, but its quality does not justify its price at all.

### 1/5 — Hit or Miss

*2021-01-11, version 1.18*

I’ve had the sync box for about 4-5 days now and it’s great when it actually works and is consistent. I usually have issues where the sync box will connect and I’ll be playing video games or watching a movie for about 15-20 minutes then I notice that the lights behind my TV are not changing when the colors and the picture change on the screen. When I go into the Sync app it’s says connecting and stays like that for a while. Sooner or later it will tell you to turn on Bluetooth in your settings under the application which is always on and I would have to toggle it off and back on and close the app and reopen it until the app is able to connect back. I usually have to do this maybe twice a day and then it works fine. WTH this shouldn’t be doing this at all especially after all the money you’re spending on each bulb, light bar, light strip plus the sync box. The sync box alone is almost $300. Something like this shouldn’t be disconnecting on its own like that and then you have to wait 2 years and try 115 times for it to reconnect. It’s a great idea and has so much potential but the connection is so bad it makes me want to return it.

### 2/5 — Ongoing Connectivity Problems

*2021-01-01, version 1.18*

I rarely write reviews but my experience with the sync box has been disappointing. The set-up wasn’t difficult but make sure you create your entertainment room first in the hue app before installing the sync app. However, I would not recommend buying the sync box due to connectivity problems with the sync app when you want to use it.

For the price of the sync box I would expect a product that works consistently and I’m surprised they’re allowed to sell a product that only works half the time. When it works it’s great but the app is hit or miss if it will actually connect to your hue set-up.

As cool as the sync box is when it’s working I would not spend your money on a product that is this flawed. I’ve only had the sync box for a couple days now and I’m most likely going to contact Philips for a refund. It’s a shame because I really like the hue product line, but I feel the sync app is flawed and I overpaid for a product that doesn’t work consistently.

I feel bad giving Philips a negative review but my experience with this product has been disappointing. The issue is definitely the sync app because the hue app works without issue. I’m no expert in app development but until Philips gets the connectivity issues fixed or figures out a way to use your sync box through the hue app I would not recommend purchasing. Too bad because the sync box has potential to be a 5-star product like the rest of the hue system.

**Developer response:** Hi there, thank you for your review. If you are still facing troubles with your Hue products, please send us a message via Facebook (http://m.me/HuePhilips) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/tweethue). We are available there 24/7.

### 1/5 — Won’t sync

*2020-12-31, version 1.18*

I owned one of the original Philip tv’s with ambient light when it first came out and loved it. I’ve upgraded tv’s, and wanted to add this feature to my new Samsung 55”. I bought everything, the color light bulbs, bridge, gradient light strip, play bars, and sync box. Everything was easy enough to set up, except the sync box doesn’t want to work. I have a straightforward connection wall to sync box->sync box to tv. I’ve tried uninstalling/reinstalling. Added a Nintendo switch to one of the ports and the sync doesn’t recognize it. It shows the sync box has been installed and grouped with my entertainment area, but it doesn’t do anything. This is my first ever review, and will stay at a 1 star until customer service gets back to me.

### 1/5 — Connectivity issues

*2020-12-29, version 1.18*

I love the Philips hue lights, I have many throughout my home. Getting the sync box just made sense! When it works, the app is great, I am able to switch between the Video, Music, Game options. However, once it starts going the app always loses connection, and it constantly tells me to check settings! And yes, local network has always been selected on. Please please fix this bug soon. From the comments that has been issue LONG time... when that problem is fixed I will definitely change rating, thank you!!!

### 1/5 — Bit of a struggle...

*2020-11-18, version 1.16*

I just received my hue sync box today and I was pretty excited to finally get it! Especially with the next gen consoles coming out in less than a week. However, I was having a lot of issues trying to get the box to connect. After holding the power button on until it flashed green, I would consistently get a red light. When I clicked on the I need help option, it just took me to settings (which was not very helpful at all). I scoured through Reddit,Youtube and Google and I couldn’t find anything. I kept trying to connect the sync box for about an hour or so until I called customer service. I got a hold of them and they told me they would call me back whenever they could figure it out why this issue happening but something told me factory reset the sync box (for the 100th time) and delete/re-install the app. Once I did that. Everything went well!
Hopefully this helps anyone else who is having issues similar to this. As for the developers of this app, I hope you guys look further into this issue and I hope I gave you guys a sufficient amount of information regarding the issue.

*Update* It stopped working again. Don’t bother purchasing this device. Return it while you can. Total waste of money.

### 3/5 — Why less features than the PC version??

*2020-11-17, version 1.16*

So I’ve been using the PC version of hue sync on windows 10 for about a year. I’ve really enjoyed setting my own color schemes for syncing music to. For some reason, this version of the app, which you have to have a $200+ Hue Sync Box accessory to even use, doesn’t have that same functionality. I find the feature set in general to be pretty basic, which is a huge disappointment considering how expensive the sync box is. I don’t recommend this for the price.

### 3/5 — Works great but too basic

*2020-10-16, version 1.15*

Just bought my sync box about a month ago and it works as designed. I love how I know get to sync my lights with my music and TV.

My issue is with the Sync App itself. There should be a “music video” option where the lights sync up with the colors of what’s on the TV screen, but also react and pulse to the music at the same time. And the app should have the same functionality (if not more) than what you offer on the desktop app. We should be able to choose the light colors that go along with the Music sync option. Hue, please add these features!!

With all the things the lights and sync box are capable of, the app extremely limits what we can do. With all the money spent on the lights and sync box, we should be able to do more things with it.

### 3/5 — Needs more features

*2020-08-10, version 1.13.0*

Just recently got a Hue Sync box, which with recent firmware updates, seems to have fixed bugs that other people have reported.
One of my biggest disappointments is when using the music feature, between songs all of the lights go out, which make the whole house go completely dark. There should be an option that turns on low lighting between the sound. I also like to use the music feature for karaoke songs, but again between people singing all of the lights go out, which means I have to keep grabbing my phone to turn the lights on.

### 1/5 — Just awful

*2020-07-22, version 1.11.0*

I love the hue lights. Despite the price I love them and put them everywhere around my house. So when I heard about the hue play I thought it would be an awesome addition. I bought it, set up was easy and simple, started playing the Xbox and the light sync was great! But that’s the end of the good news....

In the era of smart TV’s and Bluetooth this device requires that you plug in an HDMI to be able to sync your lights to your various media. Which means that if your smart tv is what you use for all your streaming services, your lights WILL NOT sync. So if you want your lights to sync to movies and music, everything has to be done through your gaming platform, PC, firestick, or other device. Seems like a major design flaw. Even after switching my sound bar to play music from my phone, and plugging the HDMI into the play box it told me that there was “No HDMI input detected” so I couldn’t even sync music from a sound bar which was beyond infuriating.

For the price, I would also expect this device to control Multiple devices from two or three different TV’s in a house but that’s not the case. Instead you have to buy a box for each TV or move the box from one tv or PC to the next.

The device is cool, but basically a cash grab when you consider its many flaws. The one star reviews on here should speak for itself. Apparently my quick and easy set up is a rarity. Don’t buy. Get it together Phillips.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Don’t buy the Philip hue sync box

*2023-01-08, version 1.21*

It’s setup process is described as something simple however it is far from it. The frustration when it fails does not out way the times it works. Yes you have the option to reach out to customer service via Facebook but they just tell you so do the same setup process over again and again until it works.
You can spend HOURS. Trying to get it to connect or successfully pair to your device then after of that opening app it won’t connect to your device ( I have tried on multiple devices) ( I have also had the sync box exchanged multiple times , as I had it to long to get a refund )

### 1/5 — Impossible to switch to a different Hue Bridge

*2022-11-13, version 1.21*

Ooph, this app is excruciatingly awful. I accidentally connected my Hue sync box to the wrong Hue Bridge (in part because there’s no way to tell which bridge it’s found during setup), and now, despite resetting the connection multiple times and trying the factory reset (holding down the power button while plugging it back in), I can’t get the Hue sync box to connect to the bridge to which all the lights in my entertainment area are connected. I’ve tried uninstalling the app to just start over, but I can’t seem to do this from the iPhone home screen. The coercive onboarding prompts won’t let me go back and specify a different bridge. Complete headache and a waste of an afternoon.

### 1/5 — Ruined my birthday

*2022-11-09, version 1.21*

I’ve wanted this device fore years and am a huge fan of hue. Knowing this and that I recently got a new house with tons of hue lights, someone got me this as a birthday present. While I love the lights, this box was always outside my price range considering what little it does but I was so happy to receive it. I plugged it in as soon as I got home… and the rest is history.

The lights connected once. Then, when I next opened the app, they wouldn’t connect. So I did what only help forums said and deleted the app and reset the box. Now it won’t even connect to wifi again.

Take this for a tech fanatic who didn’t listen to the warnings: DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM! It is a scam. You will not get it to work. It’s fundamentally flawed and has had different issues with each update as I can tell from my research. It should be illegal for them to sell this in the first place. I’m taking it back tonight.

Thanks a lot, Phillips.

### 1/5 — Hue box + tv + Xbox

*2022-03-09, version 1.21*

It is just unacceptable for something to work this poorly and be sold. the high price tag and nickel and diming is one thing- you need to buy a bridge ($60) and a sync box ($230) just to get the lightbulbs or $300 light strip to work! I was happy to pay that because of the promise of the cool reactive light set up.

But then you get it all in the mail. None of it works properly. I have already wasted 3-4 hours connecting and reconnecting the bridge to my WiFi network, syncing the sync box, resetting the sync box, retrying everything to get my lights to work. No end in sight. Is there any respect by this company for the time the average user will have to waste to try to get their faulty product to work? 4 hours of time is valuable beyond the large asking time.

And to make it worse. I still don’t know if the Lightstrip works or not. When it comes on, only the first 4-5 inches of the strip actually displays lights.

And there are 2 apps for some reason? This is a big company. Why is it acceptable to charge 1k for an entry level light set up, have hours of built in troubleshooting, and then have 2 separate apps to control it? (Philips hue app and Philips hue sync app - why aren’t these one app?)

Really really really disappointed. Just spend your money on a new tv instead.

### 1/5 — Work great for a couple months now trash

*2021-12-02, version 1.21*

Me and the rest of the world seems to have this same issue with the sync box. I read the reviews before and how everyone said this product was a nightmare. Hesitant to buy, I tested my luck and it was great! I loved it! Work for about 2 months no issues and now it can’t even connect to the Hue Bridge. Constantly getting the notification “Please make sure your Hue Bridge is on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Hue Sync Box.” Bridge is hardwired and sync box has no issues connecting to the phone. But now they can’t even connect together. I reset everything and still no luck. Waste of money at this point.

### 1/5 — Still connectivity issues

*2021-08-27, version 1.21*

So many reviews. So many complaints. System up to date and they still have t fixed the issues people are complaining about. But hey, you do get the generic developer response- call us we will help you. Raise your hand if after spending hundreds of dollars you wanna sit and troubleshoot. Without fail every time I go to use this I have to delete the app and reinstall. Factory reset the box and do a fresh startup. Hue, listen to your customers, fix this. Please don’t respond with the stupid generic dev call is response.

### 1/5 — Return the hue sync now. Trust me

*2021-07-25, version 1.21*

You will not want to deal with the multitude of problems, lack of customer service, and over all discomfort from using this app. The technology itself doesn’t work. Your best bet is to return the device now. It doesn’t even come with a reset button on the sync! Which is terrible because you need to reset it at least once a month if you want to use it. The creators honestly forgot about this product. Please please please take caution. You will be here writing a one star review in half a year tops. Just return the device now and get your money back, maybe there is a better service but this entire product has left me very wary.

### 1/5 — Won’t respond to Alexa commands anymore, won’t connect to network

*2021-07-13, version 1.21*

Last hue update completely toasted this units ability to follow Alexa commands, or connect. Open app just keeps saying “it’s taking longer to connect” yadda yadda. Worked fine before. Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken. I feel the “overhaul” of the main hue app is the culprit and there was nothing wrong with the way it was! Alexa commands are not working either and I’ve tried going though that app too in order to fix. Everything fine on that end. It’s this app and software that’s bad.

### 1/5 — If it only worked

*2021-06-20, version 1.21*

Set up my new Hue sync box 5 days ago. It has worked about 40% of the time. Like everyone else I’m stuck were the app is trying to connect and it keeps telling me to make sure it is on the same network as my bridge. Customer support said it was a firewall setting. I worked with my provider, and tried everything possible to no avail. Like everyone says it’s a great product if only it worked properly. I also noticed that people in the same situation as me get no feed back from Philips support. It surprising how at $230 Phillip’s is very aware of the issue for years, and nothing has been done to help the hundreds of people who are having connectivity issues. At this point I don't know if it’s a faulty bridge, sync box, or app. I will be returning everything I purchased for my set up. The most expensive paper weight purchased. Very disappointed

### 1/5 — Was awesome now it’s not

*2021-03-05, version 1.20*

Like everyone says it is amazing love my hue I believe 22 lights and a sync box (new about 3months old) never a issue now lately after playing Xbox my tv will go black in the middle of playing I now it’s not my box because I am still in the chat. Picture flashes several times. I know it’s not my TV. It is set to game mode hdmi 1 soooo still annoying now The app after this current update will now not connect continues to tell me to go to setting or close. I know it’s not my router or network issue all my devices/smart home works. Would really like a resolution for this issue. I have invested to much to be this disappointed

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Nice Job and Keep up The Good Work!!!

*2021-11-26, version 1.21*

I have been thinking movies need to add a new concept called The Light Track that goes along with the Video and Audio Tracks. This is the closest thing on the Market to what I have been putting together. Great work here. The device and this app is the best start. Please keep going with this and adapting it.

One suggestion start focusing on speed changes for different movie genres!

If you have a hues system get this app and the the hue sync device. It makes a complete video sound and light experience!

### 5/5 — Works just as expected

*2021-07-29, version 1.21*

I am sorry to see all of the negative reviews. I am curious why so many people are having problems. Perhaps it’s your setup? I am using the sync box with an apple tv and a very good router and have not had a single issue. No connectivity problems whatsoever. Love it. Would buy again. Recommended to all of my friends. I already had 75 hue lights in the house so adding a sync box was a matter of time.

### 5/5 — Awesome results!

*2021-02-25, version 1.19*

I don’t know what these folks are talking about or maybe I’m just lucky, but I connected the lights with the sync box tonight and after testing a few settings sat down , watched several trailers, just to see how it would work. Finally, having been impressed by the lighting with the trailers, sat back and watched a full movie. It was truly amazing! To the Phillips Engineers responsible ....Thanks so much! This truly adds to the home theater experience!

### 5/5 — Easy Setup, Works Great

*2019-12-27, version 1.3*

I was hesitant to make this purchase after reading reviews on the App Store and on retailers websites for the Play HDMI Sync Box. But I still bought it, and it was super easy to set up, works as advertised, and I honestly don’t know what the fuss is about. If you’re on the fence, just buy it and try setting it up - chances are it will work as designed and you’ll love it.

My setup: Apple TV, surround receiver, 1080p TV.

I put the Sync box between the Apple TV and the receiver, set up the entertainment zone, adjusted the lights and pushed the sync button. Ever thing just worked. Yes, it had to update, but so did the smart plugs and smart outlets I got as Christmas presents. If you use Apple products you know they update them frequently, so I don’t know why people complain about that. ✌️

### 5/5 — Awesome App and Sync device

*2019-12-13, version 1.3*

Works great and adds so much immersion to watching a Movie.

One request is the ability to adjust Color Intensity separately. Much like the Brightness slider. A Color slider for enhancing the colors. Too much bright white ruins the dark theatre effect and causes loss of night vision that is needed to properly see dark scenes. Some means of clipping max white while not clipping other colors. Hope this makes sense?

### 5/5 — Fantastic sync action with anything playing through that screen

*2019-12-04, version 1.2*

I seen a couple of videos on the hue bulbs on you tube and decided to give hue a try. I end up getting the hue light bar starter pack for my 65’ curved tv though it did not give it enough light due to the size, I was really surprised on the way they responded with the images on display, so I decided to buy the light strip plus for the top part of the tv and the results were amazing! I paid About $500 for all this which is a bit steep but they’ll deliver a amazing light show for your tv.

### 4/5 — Works well but…

*2021-07-16, version 1.21*

My sync box works consistently when I turn it on from the app, and stays connected. I remember having some issues initially setting up but those seem to have resolved themselves.

But… It would be really nice if the shortcuts I make with the iOS Shortcuts app worked. It’s never able to connect from the shortcut, so I always have to into the app to change settings and turn on the sync.

### 4/5 — Great when it works but frustrating when it doesnt

*2021-04-24, version 1.20*

I’ve had this set up now for over six months and when it works it’s very impressive. But seemingly at random it will decide to stop working. Turning everything off and back on again seems to solve the problem most times. But sometimes you have to go into this sync app and it’s super frustrating when you’re sitting right in front of the box and it tells you it’s not found and maybe it’s on a different network. Argh!!! I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes maybe it’s because the hue hub is wired into a ethernet port and this thing is on Wi-Fi that it thinks it’s on a different network for some god-awful reason and maybe it’s using Bluetooth for some thing I don’t know. I don’t know why they didn’t include an ethernet port on this thing so it could be hardwired in. I’m sure that would solve a lot of these problems by not using Wi-Fi. But judging from the horrible reviews here I guess it’s not just me having this issue. I’ll stick with it and at the very least it’s a four port HDMI automatic switcher that seems to actually work OK.

### 4/5 — Connectivity issues

*2020-06-07, version 1.9.0*

My first unit was defective but the replacement keeps loosing connection to the bridge. Or at least I think so since lights go dim until i go to settings in the app and select “switch bridge” which restores the lights for some time until it happens again and i need to select switch bridge again. I hope this is fixable from software since there is no ethernet port on the device and is within arms reach from the wifi router.

When it works it’s great. There is some delay but it’s a lot faster than the hue windows app. Will update if the issue is fixed since many people seem to have the same problem

Edit: i reviewed the wifi setting to follow the app publisher recommendation and my tri band router was already using 2.4ghz with the hdmi box.

Most of my connection issues have been solved after re arranging the box so it’s directly surrounded by 8 antennas from the router. While this takes care of the issue I can’t give more than 3 stars since if the device has no ethernet ports it should have good wifi connectivity

Edit: updates have made the setup/startup seamless with support for alexa and harmony hub, the device is able to recover if there is a connectivity issue so i am giving it another star give the improvements in reliability and automation

**Developer response:** Hi there, thank you for your feedback and review. Is it possible to change the band on your router from 5Ghz to 2.4Ghz? That might help improve the connection to the bridge. We would love to help you further, please reach out to us via Facebook http://m.me/HuePhilips or Twitter https://twitter.com/tweethue.

### 4/5 — Garbage

*2020-03-30, version 1.6.2*

In its current state the app will not allow you to set up your sync box, you get a couple screens in to where you need to connect via Bluetooth to the unit and it will not connect. Keeps saying connection is not secure. I can’t get through to any tech support from the company either. Hopefully they address this issue quickly and get a new version released that actually works. $230 for a worthless box has me a little frustrated.

UPDATE: With the release of 1.6.2 I was able to get the box to connect and get working. Unfortunately the music mode still is not functional but the video and game settings work great. Color matching is great and flows well with what is happening on screen. Overall I’m pretty happy.

**Developer response:** Hi there, thanks for your review. We're sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. We recently released an app update that fixed this issue. The latest version is now 1.6.2. You can reach us 24/7 via Facebook (http://m.me/HuePhilips) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/tweethue) where we provide 24/7 support!
