### 4/5 — Like, but it needs a security update

*2025-03-05, version 1.8*

I like this app, but it’s impossible to connect to most servers without reconfiguring them because they won’t accept the old protocol/kex which this app uses. Update please?

### 4/5 — Worked well for years

*2024-10-02, version 1.8*

This does exactly what I need and nothing more. Sync raw uncompressed photos to a NAS or Unix like server. Recently after my latest Linux upgrades, this app stopped working. Found how to edit the sshd_config and allow older algorithms. This should keep it going for many more years.

KexAlgorithms +diffie-hellman-group1-sha1,diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1

HostkeyAlgorithms +ssh-dss,ssh-rsa

### 3/5 — Not working

*2020-05-09, version 1.8*

Please update your ssh command, missing support for recent MAC. Can’t connect

### 4/5 — Very good, but lacks options

*2018-09-17, version 1.8*

Very nice app! It works beautifully also over vpn. Anyway, it lacks the possibility to delete the photos that as been deleted on the phone from the server on next backup

### 4/5 — Great app, needs a ‘Skip corrupt files’ option

*2018-09-13, version 1.8*

Super useful app!
I ran into a situation where it couldn’t read a movie file and rather then skip it it would just stop at the file.
It’s really hard to find this file as the iOS photo app won’t give you file names.
The only way I could do it was by attaching files to an email then I would get the number of the file and narrow it down.
Once I deleted the file the app could continue backing up.
It’d be great if we could get that automated somehow.

### 5/5 — PERFECT FOR BACKING UP PHOTOS!!!

*2017-03-15, version 1.8*

This app works GREAT for backing up all of your photos to any machine that allows ssh. It is very quick and efficient. I had a bug and posted it on the forum and the author responded daily and helped me diagnose it, and we determained it was an IOS bug. Everything is working GREAT now and I can runa backup once a month and it will ONLY backup the new photos. No more guesswork!!
Thanks!!!
 Josh

### 5/5 — Fantastic app

*2017-02-27, version 1.8*

I wish the paid version was this easy to use. The only rsync app for iOS. Look forward to more updates.

*2016-10-02, version 1.7*

### 5/5 — Simple app. Great power

*2016-05-08, version 1.6*

Have it setup with a NAS based on a DD-WRT AC 1450 from Netgear. Works good via SSH but via rsync is where it shines! Awesome speed and can backup only new files! Awesome!

### 4/5 — Works well

*2016-03-13, version 1.6*

Using this to rsync photos from iPhone to nas. I haven't come across any issues. However, it does pester quite a bit to rate and see their other apps

### 4/5 — schnelle Syncronisation, Probleme bei vielen Fotos

*2016-02-14, version 1.5*

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Veraltet

*2024-11-26, version 1.8*

### 1/5 — Almost perfect but an issue makes it unusable

*2023-11-20, version 1.8*

This app only support the key exchange algorithms diffie-hellman-group14-sha1,diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1,diffie-hellman-group1-sha1. These are weak and no longer supported by almost all SFTP servers, so this app can no longer backup files.

If this gets fixed it would 5 stars from me. Fingers crossed for the future!

### 1/5 — Did not get any support

*2018-09-11, version 1.8*

Application is failing since the very first run. Posted 1 star review and did not get any answer for a long time. Disgusting

### 1/5 — Loved it but it doesn’t work anymore

*2018-08-21, version 1.8*

This was my go to app for backing up my photos. But it is broken (gives error writing to socket message) when trying to backup...which leads me to believe that it needs to be updated.

### 1/5 — It doesn't work !

*2016-10-02, version 1.7*

it's simple as that, no help so stuck !

*2016-01-15, version 1.4*

### 2/5 — Not up to date

*2022-10-07, version 1.8*

Won’t connect to my distribution’s sshd. Complains that it can’t exchange keys. This is because it uses outdated diffie-helman-xxxx-sha1 while more recent distros enforce xxxx-sha256 for security. I couldn’t make my sshd accept the kex that this program offers so unfortunately I won’t be using it.

### 2/5 — No longer works with IOS 14.1

*2020-11-01, version 1.8*

No longer works with IOS 14.1

### 2/5 — Not really usable

*2019-09-29, version 1.8*

When I started using this application, I knew that it is no longer supported. Testing phase was successful so far. I love the simplicity of the app: Once set up, a single button backs up all my photos. The only obvious inconvenience is that it must run in the foreground to do anything. That means it will block the phone and prevents the screen from locking.
What I found out in the field is that the app randomly skips photos. This means that I cannot rely on my backup. What is a backup worth that is unreliable?
The only workaround is to manually select each and every photo to back up. Once I was past 500 or so, this stopped being fun.

This could be a fantastic app if it just did what it promises.
In its current state it is proof of concept only.

### 3/5 — rsync

*2021-08-08, version 1.8*

Vergesst die ganzen sync-apps. Einfach per rsync photos backuppen. Schnell, effizient, sicher.

### 5/5 — Useful!!!

*2023-11-26, version 1.8*

Dear Creator,
First of all, I would like to thank you for the PhotoBackup app for iOS. It is a simple yet highly useful solution that I appreciate. However, I’ve encountered an issue when trying to back up a large number of files. The app consistently closes itself, and I notice a ‘photobackup.partial’ file on the server. The same result occurs when using SSH or Rsync. How can I assist you in identifying and resolving this bug?

### 5/5 — Simply brilliant

*2020-12-01, version 1.8*

Updated 01/12/2020: I’m still using this app weekly to sync my now 8000+ photo camera roll to my Synology NAS (and saving a small fortune on an iCloud storage subscription in the process). I’m currently on iOS 14.2 and the app continues to run without issue despite there being no updates to it in ~3 years. Will continue to recommend this app!

Original review from 2 years ago:
A simple little app that backs up all the latest photos in my camera roll to my Synology NAS. SSH and rsync are perfect for this purpose and the new images since last run are transferred blinding quickly. No more mucking about with iTunes to get the photos off my phone and backed up to my home server. Simply brilliant!

### 5/5 — Best local file back up

*2020-01-25, version 1.8*

I’ve use this app four years and backed up terabytes of photos and videos on hand fulls of phones over that time.

### 5/5 — personal storage

*2019-10-31, version 1.8*

very useful for users managing their personal storage
not that icloud is not useful, but I rather control my personal data

i just hope it will be maintained, when a incompatible ios comes out

### 5/5 — Works, no nonsense. For advanced users.

*2019-07-11, version 1.8*

If you don’t know what rsync is and a google search leaves you more confused, this isn’t the right app for you. Otherwise it works great. Microsoft’s USB sync gives up while this app keeps running and trying.

I didn’t get the ssh key download to work so I don’t know if ssh works. But the rsync protocol works. If you’re having trouble check the logs on the server.
The only thing on my wishlist is multiple profiles to allow easy syncing to more than one server.

### 5/5 — Perfect for nas backup

*2019-04-17, version 1.8*

Good

### 5/5 — Great Backup App!

*2018-06-17, version 1.8*

I use this daily to backup all my videos and photos. I love it!

### 5/5 — Fast simple and works

*2018-01-02, version 1.8*

This is the best backup option for simplicity and ease when you want to backup to your personal servers over SSH. My use case involves backups of my photos, from multiple iPhones, to my personal servers to avoid third party servers such as Apple Google etc. The app uses rsync which is fabulous, and it is a one way sync which is even better.

Highlights:

- Simple: set up your SSH connection and then simply click one button.
- Effective: all new or changed photos are pushed from your phone to your server using rsync. This is a one way sync which is the best simple backup approach. This app purposely does not do a two way sync but that is perfect for the backup model — two way sync can cause inadvertent mis-sync and file loss if you aren’t careful. The one way sync approach is preferable for simple push from phone to storage server.
- Secure and Easy: supports encrypted private key authentication or password authentication.
- Great support: the developer is very active on their support forum and I’ve received quick responses to my questions.

If you prefer simplicity, speed of performance, ease of use, and you are maintaining your own servers because you prefer complete control over your digital assets, then this is a highly recommended app for photo backup.

### 5/5 — Not compitable with IOS 11？

*2017-10-01, version 1.8*

It was a perfect App. But the speed dropped to 3-20kBs in 5G wifi environment after updated to IOS 11(iphone7). Tried restart the cellphone and reinstall the app, neither helps. Works as usual in the other cellphone which didn't update to IOS 11. How to handle this issue?
