About
Textbooks teach you phrasal verbs in lists. Real English uses them in stories. Phrasal Verb News gives you both: short, real news articles written for English learners, with every phrasal verb marked, explained and tested.
Made by John, the American teacher behind the YouTube channel Everything English with John.
HOW IT WORKS
Each story is a short read, about three minutes, written at an intermediate level. Tap any highlighted phrasal verb to see what it means in that exact sentence. Tap any highlighted word to see a definition and three example sentences. Then test yourself. With Premium, you can also listen to the whole story read aloud.
FOUR WAYS TO PRACTICE
• Define it: choose the right meaning of each phrasal verb as it was used in the story
• True or false: six statements per story, with the reason revealed after you answer
• Fill in the blank: put the right phrasal verb back into the sentence, in the right form
• Main idea: pick the summary that actually matches what you read
WHAT'S INSIDE
• A new story almost every day, with a hundred more waiting in the archive for subscribers
• Every story sourced from established news organizations, with the sources listed
• A short conversation at the end of every story, using the same expressions again
• Translations into twenty languages, so you can check yourself without leaving the app
• Categories including World, Science, Health, Technology, Sports, Culture and more
• Save any phrasal verb or vocabulary word to your own lists and review them later
• A verb browser so you can look up everything the app has taught you
• Search across every story and every verb
• Light and dark mode
• Stories are kept on your device, so you can read them without a connection
WHY PHRASAL VERBS
They are the hardest part of English to learn from a textbook and the most common part of how people really speak. "Step down", "hold back", "look into", "catch on", "shrug off". You cannot guess them from the words inside them, so you have to meet them in context, again and again, until they sound normal. That is what this app is for.
WHO IT IS FOR
Intermediate learners, roughly B1 to B2, who can already read English but get lost when native speakers use everyday expressions. Useful if you are preparing for IELTS, TOEFL or a job interview in English, and useful if you simply want to understand the news.
