It motivates me to practice more and more importantly, gives me songs and techniques to work on. The app can be better though. Especially exercise page. I don’t like how they organize the exercise page, where I often tab the wrong place and jump to different places of the video. In addition, once I hide the video to check on the sheet music, I can never get the video back, unless closing and relaunching the exercise page. ### 5/5 — We all need a hand up *2026-02-28, version 1.1.13* For yeeeeeeeeearrrrrsss I’ve been noodling and for the most part, having fun - but have become so mad at myself for not being able to contribute any kind of repertoire at jams - although my noodling was appreciated! I’ve taken up this Pickup music course as a kind of last resort. And I’m really glad I made the leap of faith - in myself and the course. The lessons are smartly presented by nice humans, easy to digest, (the lessons, not the humans) and the exercises are interesting (they HOLD my interest), in that the motifs and riffs are catchy and enjoyable to repeatedly play back. There’s plenty of variety but not too much to overwhelm - it’s the goldilocks zone. Take a chance - there’s two weeks free trial - I’ve done mine and taken up the subscription. I’m picking up guitar again after a long time away and going back through the beginner course has been really fulfilling. It’s literally the most confusing explanation of the CAGED system I’ve ever seen. I have asked a few times internally and have just been told Accessibility improvements are coming. Still have seen zero improvements. I am a paying member and can barely use this iOS app and Web app. Biggest pain points are bad accessible names, lack of element semantics, bad container grouping, focus management, announcements. When I open one of the course cards with VoiceOver on, I cannot interact with the entire next page. The video auto plays and I have zero control with voiceover. I cannot interact with the entire explore page from the bottom tab as voiceover reads it as one giant image container. These are all fast easy fixes. Trying to change that now. The content on Pickup seems good for that but there are some incredibly infuriating design choices on the app that make using it really difficult. They need to hire a UX designer fast. No matter how good the content is havibg multiple lesson videos playing simultaneously or the unpredictable controls to get the tabs to show make it a real pain to work with. ### 2/5 — Busy Work *2025-10-25, version 1.1.4* I’ve used pickup music for a couple of months now and it has some decent content but it’s all jam packed with stuff to keep you busy instead of actually teaching you how to play. Molly the CAGED instructor is insufferable she’ll do all these crazy riffs and licks but not explain anything so you’re sitting there like why don’t I sound like that. Wouldn’t doubt if most beginners shy away for this alone. I’ve learned quite a bit but not how to apply it which is like most YouTube tutorials. If you are willing to shovel 179 dollars a year for this you are essentially paying for YouTube content with a pathway that leads to the same end goal. Knowing but not knowing how to apply. Die Navigation ist aber so schlecht, dass einem schnell der Spaß vergehen kann. Im normalen Modus sieht man die Tabs nicht, wenn man auf Vollbild oder andere Ansichten geht, fängt das Video von vorn an. In anderen Ansichten kann man nicht weiterskippen. Die Einstellung, dass Videos automatisch angespielt werden, funktioniert dort auch nicht. Also immer hin und her. For the price of two guitar lessons with a live teacher I am receiving a year of lessons on guitar, bass, piano and soon drums.
