## What is Picky Music Player?

“…a powerful music utility that is perfect for getting reacquainted with your favorite tunes.” — John Voorhees, MacStories.net
”…undeniably one of the most powerful and accessible general-purpose players available today.” — Marc Barrowclift, barrowclift.me

Featured in Macworld, MacStories, and Mac & i magazine, Picky is for people particular about their music, giving you full control over how you browse and listen to your albums and songs.

‣ Picky keeps your Artists and Albums lists uncluttered by hiding those with only a few songs – simply adjust the filters to taste.

‣ Queue up tracks to play later: simply swipe to the left on a song until the ‘+’ icon appears and turns solid orange, then let go to queue it.

‣ Use Picklists to quickly play (or queue) groups of songs – like playing an album without its bonus tracks.

‣ Easily sort the main Albums list and artists’ album lists with just a couple taps: by title, release date, duration, or by date added to your library.

‣ Picky lets you easily filter your Songs and Albums lists by genre (or by multiple genres). You can do things like quickly put together a mix by opening the filter, tapping on a few genres, and then closing it and tapping Shuffle.

‣ You can use the Artists and Songs filters to keep singles and one-hit-wonders tucked away, or bring them into focus when you really want to listen to them.

‣ Picky intelligently combines both grouping by artist and by album artist, so you'll always find your songs where you expect them to be. But if you prefer just one of the groupings, you can easily change that with a setting.

‣ Quickly see the list of your currently playing songs by simply swiping up in the Now Playing view.

‣ Quickly search across your entire music library with just a few taps.

‣ Picky is designed for iOS 15 and supports widgets, Dark Mode, Split View, AirPlay 2, iPad trackpads, Context Menus, VoiceOver, headphone remotes, iTunes Match, and Apple Music that has been added to your collection. You can use Picky exclusively or seamlessly switch between it and the system Music app.

Picky: for listeners with refined taste.

### 5/5 — Great add-on

*2025-02-16*

Needed an App that found my music wherever it was stored, I paid for the Picky Deluxe, only £5, cheap as chips and one that doesn’t charge hundreds each year. ( this is a one off payment). Highly recommended. Looking forward to more enhancements.

### 1/5 — Wasted money

*2024-07-04, version 4.5.1*

Do not purchase. It ask you for .99 and only search local q. It then ask you to purchase plus for 4.99 and still can only search locally. My media files are on a network drive so I cannot access them.

### 5/5 — Finally found what I wanted

*2024-03-13*

I’ve been downloading alternatives to the iPhone Music app for years, always to return to Apple’s mediocre default. This is the first time I’ve been happy with something else. - Snappy performance - Good design with easy navigation that isn’t constantly stranding you on the “recently added” page - The “picklist” feature is fantastic for building a queue quickly - Cute icon If I had to ask for something, I would love for the option for the currently playing panel to default to “open” when I launch the app.

Edit: Still loving Picky! Makes my music listening so much easier.

**Developer response:** Aw shucks, I’m thrilled to hear you’re so pleased with Picky! And thanks for the suggestion, I’ll add it to my ideas list for consideration for a future update 🙂.

Cheers,
Charles

### 5/5 — I guess it’s worth the money

*2024-02-02*

This is a good music player cause it automatically imports your songs which is good the only thing I didn’t like was that there was an other in app purchase call picky deluxe which I went ahead and brought to show my support

### 5/5 — I guess it’s worth the money

This is a good music player cause it automatically imports your songs which is good the only thing I didn’t like was that I had to purchase picky deluxe after purchasing this app to download it

### 5/5 — You’ve tried the rest, now try the best.

*2023-11-20, version 4.5.1*

I’ve tried others and have come back to picky each time. It’s the simplest way to enjoy your music library and have an iPod-like experience on your iPhone.

Picky is the one

### 5/5 — Class

*2023-08-05*

Been searching for a music player that is dedicated to playing your collection (ITunes library etc). Whilst there’s some decent apps available, Picky is on another level. Really punchy audio, and it somehow sorts out those sound levels on ITunes, and keeps it consistent between artists, albums, files.

### 5/5 — Simple and beautiful

*2022-09-12*

Been getting really frustrated with Apple Music and bugs they are refusing to fix (think it’s a feature on some of them) but I digress… Instead of just complaining about it, I went searching for a third party app. I just need something for local music and cloud streaming from my iTunes Match subscription (been a subscriber for close to 10 years now). Picky seemed to be the best of the bunch. Available in my region and regularly updated by the developer and reasonably priced. I made the purchase and have been using it for the last hour and really impressed and happy. It’s like Music from a few years ago. So simplistic and basic. I don’t need any extra features, it all is here and it works! And it looks fantastic. Thank you for this awesome app and job well done. I’m happy and hoping to keep using this for many years to come.

Still loving it many months later but wanted to provide an update:

I canceled iTunes Match and found out that you can use Picky and “delete” the default app, but doing so will delete all downloaded music from your iPhone. But I deleted and then reuploaded directly from my Mac and didn’t have to redownload the default Music app. I am now using Picky all on its own and can sync from my Mac using the “Music” app with no issues.

However, doesn’t seem like you can use Picky while using iTunes Match or Apple Music if you want to get new music onto your iPhone, unfortunately.

But this saves me $25 every year now!

### 2/5 — Lost music

*2022-06-06, version 4.5.1*

I’ve used this app for years and thoroughly enjoyed it! HOWEVER, in recent months it either fails to import newly downloaded music or worse, simiply deletes music! The developer doesn’t appear to have any type of support other than to give a poor rating. Buyer beware!!!

### 5/5 — Still the Best

*2022-03-24*

In case anyone was wondering… this is still the best music player around. I am so grateful that the developer has continued to support it for all these years. Nothing compares.

**Developer response:** Glad to hear how happy with Picky you are! I’ve been meaning to investigate playlist folder support further… stay tuned 🙂

### 4.4 — 2021-09-22

Hi all! Just checking in with a little update for the new OSes — stay tuned for more additions later in the year, and as always feel free to send me any feedback or suggestions for future updates.

Here’s what’s new:

‣ New extra large widgets for iPadOS 15

‣ UI style adjustments for iOS 15

‣ Picky now displays playlist artwork in the main Playlists screen, not just in the detail screens

‣ The main albums singled out from the Deep Cuts, Quick Plays, and Long Plays lists on the Search screen are now pulled at random for a bit more variety

‣ Deep Cuts now also includes some older albums that iTunes doesn’t have a last play date for

‣ Improved Dark Mode placeholder images for albums without cover art

### 4.3 — 2021-02-11

Hi all! This update is chock-full of lots of little improvements, as well as one big new feature for folks with Picky Deluxe.

What’s Picky Deluxe, you ask? It’s a one-time in-app purchase that’s a great way to support my work on the app and unlock some bonus features (previously: a set of alternate app icons to choose from).

So with this update I’m bringing in a second bonus feature that I’m calling Library Discovery: new ways of slicing up your music library to surface albums in heavy rotation and those you may not typically reach for. When you open up the Search view you’ll see these new lists: Recently Added and Recently Played (available to everyone), and a few more that are a part of Picky Deluxe — Deep Cuts (albums that weren’t played recently), Quick Plays (albums and EPs half an hour or less), and Long Plays (albums over 80 minutes).

I’m planning to expand on this with even more lists in the future, and other bonuses for people who’ve purchased Picky Deluxe. I stress the word bonuses because I will still be keeping Picky Deluxe as an optional add-on, with all of Picky’s core features available to everyone.

As for the oodles of smaller improvements, here’s the list:

‣ The Now Playing bar now appears throughout Search, not just on the first screen
‣ Fixed a very annoying bug where the app could freeze up when skipping tracks from the Now Playing screen
‣ Updated the design of the Playlist details sort menu, and added new options for sorting the tracks by duration
‣ Longer artist names now display in full across multiple lines when viewing an album or playlist’s songs
‣ If the Recently Added or Recently Played widgets fail to load an album’s cover image they’ll now display its title instead
‣ Fixed a bug where genre filters could appear hidden in some situations
‣ Fixed a bug that could prevent restoring a previous Picky Deluxe purchase from another device
‣ Fixed a crash when pressing the “View song queue” button if the queue hadn’t loaded

### 4.2 — 2021-01-03

‣ New and improved organizing of multi-disc albums into sections, with one-tap playback, queuing, and shuffle actions per disc
‣ Artists’ own albums will be preferred over compilations when generating their artwork for the Artists list
‣ Fixed a couple of layout bugs with the Now Playing screen (for smaller devices and when AirPlay is selected)
‣ Further optimized the loading of very large libraries

Happy New Year, folks — stay tuned for more updates coming your way. And a sincere thank you to everyone who has sent in feedback or left a tip in the tip jar :)
