## What is Pictan?

Images make vocabulary stick.
Pictan is a vocabulary app for learners who want to learn English words in English.

Original images for all 8,000 words
Learn each word together with an image so it stays in memory. Images are not limited to a sample or a few levels: every word in the 8,000-word catalog has one.

Stay in English without getting stuck
Definitions and examples are in English. If an unfamiliar word appears inside one, tap it to see its image and English definition on the same card. Keep the context without leaving for a dictionary or translator.

Practical vocabulary, organized by level
The catalog focuses on objects, actions, and states used in real life rather than test-prep lists. Forty levels range from introductory to expert vocabulary.

Recall first, then check
Every card starts by asking you to recall the word from its picture, English meaning, and letter hints. Show the answer, choose "I knew it" or "Not yet," and that answer decides when the word comes back. "I've seen this" becomes "I can recall this."
Letter hints adapt to how well you know each word: a new word shows more of its letters, and the hints fade as you recall it more reliably.

The app decides what to study
Tap "Start learning" and the app picks today's reviews and new words for you. A round is up to twenty cards and takes a few minutes. End early and everything you answered is kept.
Review timing adjusts to each word, so only what you are about to forget comes back — just before you forget it. Spaced repetition helps what you learn stay with you.

Watch your learning take shape
The vocabulary tree on Home grows its trunk and branches as you learn more words, and its leaves darken as words take root. Leaves droop when a review is overdue, and the soil dries out when reviews pile up. Take a break and the trunk and branches you have grown remain. Each difficulty grows its own tree.

A short check at the start places you at the right difficulty. Difficulty runs from beginner to expert, and you can always pick a different one yourself.

Who it's for
You have the basics and want to understand vocabulary in English. You tried an English dictionary but kept getting stopped by unfamiliar words inside the definitions. You want images to help vocabulary stay in memory.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 4.0.0 — 2026-09-08

Pictan 4.0

Learning is now built around recalling words.

• Tap "Start learning" and the app picks what you need today — due reviews are taken first and new words fill the rest — in rounds of up to 20 cards. There is no longer a separate learn step and test step
• Every card asks you to recall the word from its picture, English meaning, and letter hints before you show the answer. Your "I knew it" or "Not yet" decides when the word comes back
• Letter hints adapt to how well you know each word: a new word shows more of its letters, and the hints fade as you recall it more reliably. Turn on "Don't hide the answer" in Settings to see every card in full from the start
• End a round early and everything you answered is kept
• After each round you see how many words you learned today, how each memory stage changed, and what is due tomorrow
• Home now has a vocabulary tree. The trunk and branches grow as you learn more words, and the leaves darken as words take root. Leaves droop when a review is overdue, and the soil dries out when reviews pile up. After each round the growth replays with short sounds (you can turn them off in Settings)
• Word status now uses five stages — Not started, Learning, Starting to remember, Growing, Retained — in both Stats and the word list
• The opening level check is now the Quick Test: picture cards, the answer shown, and you choose whether you knew it. It takes about ten words, and you see the recommended difficulty with sample words before you start
• More than 3,000 word pictures are new
• In a tapped word's popup you can keep tapping words inside its definition. The blank in an example sentence shows the same hint letters as the word
• Review reminders keep going for about two weeks after you pause, with widening gaps (still at most one a day, only on days you have reviews)
• Layouts were adjusted throughout for larger text sizes

Your learned words and review schedule carry over. Any 20-word set in progress ends here; from now on you start in the new format. The streak counter on Home has been replaced by today's and this week's study counts.

Thank you for using Pictan.

### 3.3.0 — 2026-08-24

Pictan 3.3

A smoother first session.

• After the quick check, you go straight to your first card
• A short guide appears on your first card and your first test
• On Learn cards, you can now swipe right to go to the next card
• Fixed example sentences that sometimes would not scroll
• "Reset All Progress" now starts you over from the quick check
• Better layouts at larger text sizes — the study screen, word list, word details, Settings, and tapped-word popups

Thank you for using Pictan.

### 3.2.0 — 2026-08-20

Pictan 3.2

Reviews now arrive in amounts that fit your day.

• Each day brings a comfortable number of reviews — even after time away, you pick up again at your usual pace
• The home screen shows today's reviews
• The level list is easier to browse, and your current level always stays easy to find
• Fixed layout issues with larger text sizes

Thank you for using Pictan.

### 3.1.0 — 2026-08-08

Pictan 3.1

Learning works differently now. You study in sets of twenty and make each set yours before moving on.

• Meet all twenty words with their pictures, then check whether you can recall each one
• Missed words come straight back, and you check again — the set isn't done until all twenty are yours
• A short check at the start now places you at the right level
• The home screen has been rebuilt: today's reviews, what you got today, and your progress at a glance
• Reviews now ask "Remembered / Forgot"
• Reviews arrive after you finish a set, not mixed into it
• Leaving mid-set now asks you to confirm

Thank you for using Pictan.

### 2.4.0 — 2026-07-21

Pictan 2.4

New words now start with the picture, word, meaning, and example together. After you choose “Know it,” later reviews ask you to recall the word from the picture and definition before checking the answer.

What's new

• Start immediately with a real card — no practice card or forced tutorial
• Automatic pronunciation on fully visible cards
• New “Keep reviews fully visible” setting
• Clearer difficulty selection
• Fixes for startup, iCloud restore, word lists, and audio playback
• Removed the Facebook advertising SDK and tracking permission prompt

Thank you for using Pictan.
