## What is Pilcrow?

Most keyboards fix a typo by making a different mistake. Pilcrow corrects what you meant and leaves alone what you actually wrote.

In testing it changes a correctly spelled word fewer than 7 times in 1,000, while restoring 61–72% of the words you genuinely mistyped.

IT BACKS OFF
Undo a correction once and it never applies that one to you again. Every word it learns from you is listed, and you can delete any single one.

ONE TAP FIXES THE WHOLE MESSAGE
It re-reads everything you typed, repairs it and tells you what changed. One tap puts it all back.

TYPE THE WAY YOU TYPE
• Forty languages, more than one in the same sentence, no switching
• Swipe typing, and accents put back when you skip them (74–85%)
• Saves 27–35% of your keystrokes
• Learns your words and phrases, and lets go of what you drop
• Themes, a number row, emoji with memory, haptics, adjustable height

PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION
The keyboard contains no networking code. No account, no analytics, no cloud, no ads. The model that predicts your next word runs on your phone. It works with Full Access switched off, though we recommend turning it on.

WHAT IT COSTS
Everything is free for three days from the first time you type. Nothing is charged when the days end. Then unlock it once and keep it for good, or subscribe yearly or monthly; subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. Either way the keyboard keeps typing, and nothing it has learned from you is deleted.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.1.2 — 2026-10-06

A quicker way between your languages, a purchase that follows your Apple Account, a backup of everything the keyboard has learned, and keys with depth.

SWITCH LANGUAGE WITH A SLIDE
Slide a finger along the space bar to change language: right for the next, left for the previous. The space bar now shows the language you are typing in. Hold the space bar and the keyboard is still a trackpad. Prefer the slide to move the cursor, as before? Settings, Gestures & feel. And when you start a new sentence in your other language, the keyboard follows you sooner.

YOUR PURCHASE, WHEREVER YOU INSTALL IT
Delete Pilcrow and install it again, or set it up on another iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account, and it opens already unlocked, without tapping Restore. On a device where the App Store cannot tell us which account bought it, Restore still works as before. There is still no account to make: the app uses an identifier Apple gives it for your copy of Pilcrow, which carries no name or email, and only to keep your purchase with you.

BACK UP WHAT IT HAS LEARNED
Your words, spellings, phrases and corrections can now be saved as a file, under Dictionary, and restored on a new phone or after you have cleared them. A restore adds to what is already there and never replaces it. Backing up needs Full Access, because without it the app cannot read what the keyboard has learned; restoring does not.

KEYS WITH DEPTH
Two new themes, Keycap and Ember, stand each key on an edge of its own colour, and every key now presses down under your finger. Ten older themes have left the picker; if you used one, the keyboard moves to Automatic or Pilcrow. The keys also follow the keyboard's own light or dark look, so they no longer turn light on a dark keyboard in some apps.

PREDICTIONS THAT KNOW YOUR HABITS
A word you keep writing after another now comes first in the predictions. In eleven languages, strong swear words are no longer suggested until you have typed them yourself.

BETTER ACCENTS AND CORRECTIONS
In many languages a skipped accent is now put back using the word before it and the rest of the sentence, and corrections weigh your languages against each other more fairly when you write in two.

FORTY LANGUAGES
Two more written right to left, one of them with a key of its own for joining the parts of a word, as its iPhone keyboard has.

LIGHTER ON EMOJI
The emoji panel now keeps in memory only what is on screen, so browsing every category no longer weighs the keyboard down. The emoji are a little smaller too.

The unlock screen now shows every plan at once. The keyboard still contains no networking code.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-10-01

Thirty-eight languages, and a keyboard that opens faster and stays lighter.

MORE LANGUAGES, WITHOUT AN UPDATE
Pilcrow now types in thirty-eight languages, including its first written right to left, where the suggestion bar, the cursor keys and backspace turn round with the text.

FASTER TO OPEN, LIGHTER TO KEEP
The keyboard no longer reloads its prediction model every time it appears, so the first keys in a new field get suggestions too. It no longer takes more memory each time it opens, which makes iOS less likely to close it. The app starts faster with a large personal dictionary.

BETTER WHILE IT LEARNS YOU
Next-word suggestions no longer dip in the first days, while it is still learning your words. Tapping a suggestion to finish a word no longer teaches it a correction, which had it rewriting short everyday words.

YOUR OWN SYMBOL KEYS
Put the characters you use most on the number and symbol keys, in Settings under Keys & layout. Each one replaces a key; nothing is added or removed.

ALSO
• Number and symbol keys use the full width where the letter rows are longer
• Cleaner word lists: misread and foreign words are no longer suggested
• Long-press offers accented letters several languages were missing
• Accents are put back on words that were missing two of them
• Languages are listed alphabetically in Settings
• Themes can set the colour of a pressed special key

The keyboard still contains no networking code.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-28

Performance improvements

### 1.0.6 — 2026-09-25

The keyboard now learns where your finger actually lands.

IT MOVES TO MEET YOUR THUMB
Most people land a little off centre, in the same direction every time. Pilcrow now measures that from your own clean words and moves where each key listens. Nothing moves on screen. For a steady habit of about two millimetres it gets three more characters in a hundred right. If you already land on centre it changes nothing. It learns only from words that came out clean, so it under-corrects on purpose, and "Forget everything" now clears it along with the rest.

GLIDE THROUGH THE SPACEBAR
One gesture can write more than one word. Keep going through the spacebar and lift when the phrase is done.

BACKSPACE, BOTH WAYS
Swipe the backspace key to take back whole words, and swipe the other way to have them returned. After a correction, backspace is a plain backspace again, which is what many of you asked for.

MAKE THE TOP ROW YOURS
The tool row is now a setting. Pick up to six tools from a longer list in Settings, under Toolbar. A paste chip is offered for a minute after you copy something new, and not after that.

ALSO
• Themes, a trackpad row, flick up for the second character, and typing stats
• Typing and swiping stay fast with a large personal dictionary
• Held keys no longer start late
• A glide can no longer write a word the suggestion bar did not show

Nothing here sends anything anywhere. The keyboard still contains no networking code.

### 1.0.5 — 2026-09-22
