## What is Pilgrim?

Every walk holds something waiting to be noticed.

Pilgrim is a walking companion for those who walk with intention — whether across a continent or around the block. No leaderboards. No calorie goals. No social feeds. Just you, the path, and whatever arises.

WALK

GPS tracking with live pace, steps, altitude, and waypoint marking. A three-way time breakdown shows how each walk splits between walking, talking, and meditating — because those are different states of attention. Lock your screen and keep walking — Live Activity stays on the lock screen.

SEEK

A third way of walking, for days you want to be led. Choose a duration, set an intention, and Pilgrim hides clearings in fog on your map — places you didn't choose, shaped by your question and the moment you set out. A quiet pulse guides you: a sonar ping in your pocket, a breathing crescent of light on the map. Reach the fog and be still, and the way continues. Found places return in your summary glowing with the light of the hour you reached them.

LEAVE A WHISPER

Place an ephemeral audio message at your location for other pilgrims to discover. Choose from seven energies — presence, lightness, wonder, gratitude, compassion, courage, stillness — and set how long it lingers: a day, a week, a month. Walk near someone else's whisper and it plays softly, a voice from a stranger who once passed this way.

PLACE A STONE

Start or grow a cairn wherever you walk. Cairns are permanent landmarks that evolve through seven tiers as pilgrims add stones — from a faint mark to an eternal cairn of 108. Each tier carries its own kanji and meaning. Walk to a cairn to see who has been here before you.

RECORD

Tap to capture a voice note at any moment, timestamped and pinned to your location. After the walk, everything is transcribed on your device using WhisperKit — no audio ever leaves your phone.

GATHER YOUR RELICS

Photos you took along a walk appear in a carousel on your summary — gathered from Apple Photos by time and GPS, never copied, never uploaded. Pin a photo and it becomes a circular thumbnail anchored to exactly where you stood — on your map, your walk page, and inside .pilgrim exports. The app never stores a single pixel — only a reference back to Apple Photos. Opt-in, default off.

REFLECT

Six styles of writing prompts — contemplative, reflective, creative, gratitude, philosophical, journaling — generated on-device from your own words, walk context, and pinned photos. Copy them into your favorite writing tool and turn a walk into writing.

MEDITATE

A dedicated meditation mode with an animated breathing circle and customizable rhythms. Downloadable voice guide packs offer spoken prompts during stillness. Ambient soundscapes accompany your practice. Meditation time is tracked separately, alongside walk time.

WALK WITH THE COLLECTIVE

See how far pilgrims have walked together. An anonymous counter tracks the collective distance — no accounts, no identifiers. Watch it cross pilgrimage milestones: the Camino de Santiago, the Shikoku 88, the length of Japan.

PILGRIM COLLECTS GOSHUIN

In Japan, pilgrims collect vermilion ink stamps at temples along a route. Pilgrim generates a digital seal for each walk, derived from its unique data — distance, duration, weather, elevation. Milestones press their own seals — your first walk, your first unknown. Your collection grows with your practice.

YOUR WALK IS YOURS ALONE

Everything stays on your device. Transcription is on-device. No accounts, no analytics, no behavioral profiling. When you delete the app, your data goes with it — unless you exported it first.

Weather awareness via WeatherKit. Moon phases and planetary hours woven into the walk context. Seasonal color shifts calibrated to your hemisphere. Export as .pilgrim packages. Share walks as ephemeral web pages or hand-painted etegami postcards. View your journey at view.pilgrimapp.org.

Open source. Free forever. No subscriptions.

### 5/5 — Walk well

*2026-04-10*

Pilgrim replaced three apps for me: the one I used for routes, the one I used to meditate, and the one I used to dump half-formed thoughts. Beautifully designed, privacy-respecting, no nagging. Just a walk.

I’m always walking and ideas come to me yet I don’t write them down and I would forget. This app completely solves that as well as giving me the context based on my location. I just love the whole vibe of this app! Thank you for making this!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.10.0 — 2026-08-19

Walk with me.

Share a walk as a living page: your voice recordings play at the places you spoke them, photos appear where you took them, and the route walks itself — at a guided pace, or exactly as it happened, minute for minute.

Friends who reach the end can leave an anonymous stone on your walk's cairn, and the pile grows just like the cairns on your trail.

Nothing uploads unless you choose Interactive. Shared pages still return to the trail when their time comes.

Walk well.

### 1.9.1 — 2026-08-04

A tree stands in every clearing.

- Seek arrivals are now marked by a solitary tree instead of a small point of light — the same mark in the app, on shared walk pages, and in the web viewer
- Each clearing's tree wears the sky you found it under: amber in the golden hours, pale gold at midday, silver after dark

Walk well.

### 1.9.0 — 2026-07-24

Your walks now speak in fuller sentences.

- AI prompts carry far more of each walk — your practice (wander or seek), pauses and climbs, the moon, the changing light, and the patterns worth noticing
- Each prompt now guides the response: in your language, from your walk, nothing invented
- Voice transcription is noticeably more accurate, with a better on-device model (downloads once on your first transcription after updating)
- Whispers and cairns now wear hand-drawn art — a wisp of breath in each mood's color, and cairns that visibly age: stones gather, moss arrives, a sacred rope marks consecration, and the eternal glows from within. The stone sheet shows what your stone makes the cairn become
- The collective walks a different pilgrimage each day — the same route for every pilgrim, turning with the seasons. Contribute a walk and it ends among those who really walked it

Walk well.

### 1.8.1 — 2026-07-16

The journal's path comes alive.

- Scenery no longer vanishes as you scroll deep into your walking history
- Gates now mark real thresholds — vermilion for practice milestones, weathered stone with moss for your first unknowns
- Seek walks that found places raise small stone cairns, growing with each finding
- The moon shows its true phase from each walk's night, and lanterns glow only for walks that met the dark
- The season drifts through: petals in spring, fireflies on summer nights, dragonflies in autumn, snow in winter

Walk well.

### 1.8.0 — 2026-07-14

The unknown now has a door.

Seek — a third way of walking. Choose a duration, set an intention, and follow a quiet pulse through fog toward places you didn't choose. Be still when you arrive, and the way continues.

Found places glow on your walk's map in the light of the hour you reached them. The journal marks seek walks with their own footprints, and new goshuin seals honor the unknowns you've found.

Walk well.
