## What is Pipa Vocal Synthesizer?

This virtual instrument is a crossover between a wavetable synthesizer and a granulating sample player specialized in generating vocal sounds. Pipa simulates the sound of human voices in a new way; instead of using ordinary samples or processing oscillators with formant filters, Pipa uses a large database of wavetables extracted from real vocal samples. The benefit of this technique is that it’s possible to seamlessly morph between those wavetables with proper phase alignment. This technique enables Pipa to continuously make transitions between pitch, formants and dynamics, which is very useful in a musical context.

Note that Pipa consumes quite some CPU - a modern iPad is highly recommended. Pipa is also only available as an AUv3 plugin to be used in an AUv3 compatible host application like Garageband, Cubasis, AUM or similar.

In the age of amazing realistic AI vocals? I didn’t check the release year, what a fool I am. Anyhow, the developer needs to make a living, too, so I should support the good effort.

Works well as an Audio Unit in GarageBand on iOS (and the macOS version is also good), but more voice styles are needed. This is just money sitting on the table waiting for the developer to pick up and implement in this very useful app.

IOS music makers are always on the look out for new and interesting sounds, and/or variations. Pipa delivers both, and uses to add warmth and tone to a piece it’s excellent. BTW, I got this in the recent sale, and returned to buy more the next morning …only to find that the developers sale lasted a single day. So what was the point of that, getting people interested then snatching away the opportunity.

It’s interesting, very worth tweaking the presets and setting up user patches. Also look closely at your playing technique because these aren’t just samples but act more like synth patches.

I like it so far! It’s on the right track. My only gripe is that there needs more voice range, and I’d like to be able to stay within the same voice on a keyboard rather than it changing every octave and going from the right voice type to suddenly a man.

Having different voices more common with various ethnicities/languages, strong, soft, robust, soulful, mousey, raspy, hoarse, etc. would make this perfect, along with larger range and the ability to add more vibrato by sliding up on the key to give it more control. 

If there’s a way to do these already and I’m just missing it, please let me know where it is and how to use it lol

What would be really cool is if we could play a song or speak and it can adjust to that voice frequency and tone and learn new voices. It sounds too much like basic Caucasian church singers at the moment. Lol I want voices like soft spoken Japanese electronic pop girls and African RnB soul queens 🤣

All I can say is...OW OW OW AOOW OWAAOW or something like that.  In a good way.  After a couple of hours shifting controls and selecting the different vowel sounds (top right on the screen), I suddenly have an interest in choirs.  Versatile, wide-ranging, new.

It’s probably one of those apps where it is best deployed sparingly, but it is versatile to a point, giving you different vowels to choose from, and there is the basic male/female/mixed choice on the left of the app’s fascia.  Having said that, I do want to produce an entire piece with this app centre-stage, multiple parts.  It kind of asks to do that.

Chords or just two-note chords, can sound really vibrant with the right vowel sound selected, and full and all very warm and great.  This does not sing as such, but it does do a good bit of angelic sounds and also down into Gregorian chant territory, it’s really interesting.  Very usable.

Klevgrand say it has a basis in wavetables morphing and fusing together somehow, and the graphical approach to certain aspects being adjusted is reminiscent of the rather wonderful Korvpressor which I absolutely cannot do without - normal compressors leave me largely baffled.  The sausage-graphic was a real innovation then, and I like this app’s similar principles being applied.  Standard enough wavetable mode of operation I know, but it’s well-done here for multiple aspects of how the vowel is emitted.

Very 5-star, and having spent some time now slapping about every effect I have in iOS on the end of it, again less is more, because you don’t want to obliterate the vocal sound this app sends out.  So delays and echoes and reverb work very well, distortion just is kind of prone to losing the character of this as a sound source, so there’s a bit of subtlety to deploying this to best advantage.

Don’t think there’s anything quite like it on iOS for sure, and it worked well in Cubasis 3 when used as an AUv3, I will be trying it in GB next.

Very likeable, lovely interface, I just needed to take care with some inserted effects in Cub3, their input or output could default to be a little ear-splitting if used right away without checking this, my fault.

Well made and responds well to judicious effects.  This is a bit novel, in a good way, and the wavetable essence comes through as I say, in that parameters are altered of eg pitch change over the duration of the vowel uttered, and other parameters too.

Lastly, I found the pitch wheel on the Cub3 keyboard onscreen, to be really useful, you pop your finger on it above or below the ‘sprung’ central position, and it leaps to that location, a characteristic not repeatable in a ‘real’ MIDI controller keyboard, and this method of pitch-changing as opposed to hitting a different note by the key pressed, gives a lovely effect with this choral type of sound, very nice!
