## What is Pitot?

From AutoPilot: offline flight training drills made by a CFII.

Three instruments run off two lines of air. When one of those lines blocks, the needles keep moving, and they lie in a specific, predictable direction. This app teaches which one, and why.

Seven chapters, each built on live physics rather than stored answers. Move a slider and every gauge on the screen recomputes.

THE CHAPTERS

• The System: two lines, three instruments, and which one taps which
• The Altimeter: sealed wafers, the Kollsman window, and one inch per thousand feet
• Airspeed Indicator: the only differential instrument, and what it is actually subtracting
• Vertical Speed Indicator: a calibrated leak, and the lag it buys
• Blockages: what each failure actually looks like on the panel
• Corrective Action: pitot heat, alternate static source, and the last resort
• Preflight & Regs: 91.411, 91.413, and the walk-around

THE BENCH

A sandbox with every input exposed. Set an altitude, a true airspeed and a Kollsman setting. Ice the pitot mast, block the drain, seal the static port, open the alternate source. All three gauges respond together, and a table under them prints what the altimeter and the airspeed indicator read, what working ones would read, and the error.

This is where the numbers stop being memorized. A sealed static port and a 300 ft climb reads 300 feet low and 36 knots slow, and the app does not look that up: it computes it from the pressures.

THE QUIZ

42 questions tagged by chapter. A wrong answer offers the chapter that explains it, and the scorecard lists the chapters worth a second look.

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

No account and no tracking. The app makes no network requests of its own: the chapters, the bench and the quiz work in airplane mode, on the ramp, in a hangar with no signal. Nothing is collected and there is no in-app purchase. The regulatory chapter names the 14 CFR sections rather than paraphrasing them, and the airspeed markings and V-speeds are the Cessna 172S figures from its Pilot's Operating Handbook.

Built for private and instrument students, and for the CFI who has to explain the alternate static source one more time.

## Is Pitot safe?

Not enough ratings yet to assess Pitot.

## Is Pitot legit?

Pitot-Static Lab & Quiz appears legitimate, with a few gaps. The AppsHunter Legitimacy Score for Pitot is 65 out of 100 points across 7 verification signals from App Store and developer data.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.0.1 — 2026-10-09

• Airspeed now comes from the air's real density at altitude, so the airspeed indicator reads below true airspeed as you climb, the way a real one does. Every figure built on it has been recomputed.
• The Instrument Bench prints what the altimeter and the airspeed indicator read, what working ones would read, and the error.
• A wrong quiz answer offers the chapter that explains it, and the scorecard lists the chapters worth a second look.
• The System chapter has a Trace picker for following the pitot line or the static line.
• iPhone landscape, and layouts that hold at the largest text sizes.
• VoiceOver reads the gauges, sliders and tables in words, with their units.
• A More menu with Support, the Privacy Policy, and other AutoPilot apps.

### 1.0 — 2026-08-20

No release notes.
