## What is Pitru Calendar?

Pitru Calendar is a Tamil-first panchanga, designed for families who keep their ancestors close.

Track the daily tithi, Tamil month and day, nakshatra, and paksha with names you already know — வளர்பிறை பிரதமை, தை 1, கார்த்திகை — the way Pambu Panchangam and Arcot Panchangam print them. Every day's panchanga is computed from the Vakya tradition; Vakya-vs-Drik differences are documented openly.

For Iyer and Iyengar families, the app makes ancestor srardham observances easy to track. Add each ancestor once — name, gothram, the tithi and Tamil month of their passing — and the calendar surfaces every annual srardham, Mahalaya tarpanam, and aabdikam date going forward.

Festivals included for Tamil Nadu and pan-India Hindu observance: Thai Pongal, Aadi Perukku, Aavani Avittam, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Mahalaya Amavasai, Vijayadashami, Karthigai Deepam, Vaikunta Ekadashi, Maasi Magam, Panguni Uthiram, and the full Ekadashi / Pradosham / Sankashti Chaturthi cycle.

Privacy is the foundation:
• Everything stays on your device. No analytics. No third-party tracking. No SDK.
• Ancestor names never leave the app — Siri reads only dates, never names.
• Backups are encrypted with your passphrase using AES-GCM-256.
• iCloud sync (optional) uses Apple's private database with end-to-end encryption.

Tamil VoiceOver is supported with proper language tagging. Apple Watch and Lock Screen widgets show today's panchanga at a glance. Siri shortcuts: "What's today's panchanga?" "When is the next srardham?"

The app is bilingual: Tamil names are primary; English alternates are always present.

### 1.8 — 2026-08-01

v1.8 — Parity and polish: the daily Sankalpam now recites the next nakshatra alongside next tithi/yoga/karana; the Festivals tab surfaces observances up to 10 years out instead of hiding anything past a year; and Settings replaces the Gotra + Veda text fields with pickers (the same 24-entry Gothram catalog Family uses, plus a 4-Veda menu).

Sankalpam — next nakshatra: The sankalpam sheet already reads "[current tithi] (until X) then [next tithi]" for tithi, yoga, and karana. It now does the same for nakshatra — "[current] nakshatra (until X) pinpu [next] nakshatra yuktayam" in the English column and "[current] நக்ஷத்ர யுக்தாயாம் (X வரை) பின்பு [next] நக்ஷத்ர யுக்தாயாம்" in Tamil — so the anga-yukta sequence is complete for evening or late-morning recitations that cross the boundary.

Festivals — full 10-year horizon: Observances whose next occurrence is more than a year out (Adhika Masam intercalary months, rarer sankramanas, some tithi-yoga combinations) previously showed "Outside bundled window" even though the panchangam data goes through 2035. The horizon now searches the full bundled range, so those rows show a real date. The "outside bundled window" label still applies for genuine edge cases where a rule has no match anywhere in the bundle.

Settings — Gotra + Veda pickers: The Sankalpam Identity section's Gotra field is now a searchable list of the 24 seed gothrams (Bharadwaja, Kashyapa, Vasishta, Atri, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, Agastya, and 16 more), the same catalog used when picking a gothram for a Family member. The Sutra field becomes a Veda menu with the four Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda). Existing free-text values are preserved.

### 1.7 — 2026-06-21

v1.7 — Three improvements after v1.6: the Today tab now refreshes to the current date when you reopen the app the next day; new "Birthdays" section in the Family tab for traditional nakshatra-based birthday reminders; and the daily hero card now shows Sanskrit lunar-month and weekday-graha names alongside the Tamil ones, plus a new ritu (season) chip.

Today tab — stale date fix: If you were viewing today's panchangam and left the app overnight (or for a few days), reopening it now auto-snaps the Today tab to the new today instead of stranding you on yesterday. If you had intentionally navigated to a different date before backgrounding, that picked date is preserved — we only auto-snap when you were on today.

Birthdays for living family: A new section in the Family tab tracks living family members' traditional Tamil birthdays — the day each Tamil year when Sun is in their birth month AND Moon is in their birth nakshatra. Add a person via Family → Birthdays → +, fill in their Name (Tamil + English), birth Tamil month, and birth nakshatra. Reminders fire 3 days before, 1 day before, and on the morning of the day. The next computed birthday date appears on each row. Notifications include the person's name (unlike ancestor srardhams, which use the relationship for cultural reverence).

Hero card — Sanskrit names and ritu: The Today hero card now shows the Sanskrit lunar-month name in parens alongside the Tamil month ("Vaikasi (Jyeshtha)") and the Sanskrit graha (planetary lord) alongside the weekday ("Friday (Bhrigu)") — same names the sankalpam already uses. A new ritu (season) capsule sits below the header showing the current 2-month season ("Vasanta Ritu"). Toggle languages live in Settings and all three update without restart.

### 1.6 — 2026-06-13

v1.6 polishes the v1.5 train: pure-transliteration English Sankalpam, Tamil connectives in the Today hero card, navigation titles + tab labels that follow language switches live, and snooze actions on ancestor srardham + tarpanam reminders.

Sankalpam (English column): rewritten as a one-to-one phonetic transliteration of the Tamil recitation — no more English "Samvatsara:" / "Ayana:" labels or English prose at the end. You read the English column and hear the same Sanskrit sankalpam ("Parabhava nama samvatsare ... Mama saha kutumbanam sarvabhishta siddhyartham ... Nitya pujam adya karishye"). Tamil column now uses "பின்பு" (matches the Today hero card's vocabulary) instead of "பிறகு". Speaker block reads "Bharadwaja gotrotpavasya Apastamba sutrasya Sadhasivam sharmanaha" instead of the prior English glosses.

Tamil connectives on Today: the hero card's tithi / nakshatra / yoga / karana rows now read "பௌர்ணமி (12:58 வரை) பின்பு பிரதமை" in Tamil locale — no more English "ends" / "then" mixed into Tamil text. English locale is unchanged.

Locale-reactive titles: changing the app language in Settings now updates the top navigation title (Today, Calendar, Family, Festivals, Settings, About, all sheets) and the five bottom tab labels live, without an app restart. Previously titles stayed in the old language until the next launch.

Snooze on srardham / tarpanam: ancestor srardham + tarpanam reminders (and Mahalaya Paksham) now show three snooze buttons when you long-press the lock-screen banner: Snooze 10 min, Snooze 1 hour, Snooze tomorrow (next 8 AM IST). Tapping a snooze reschedules the same reminder at the new time. Festival notifications stay plain (no snooze needed).

Diagnostics: a hidden test affordance — long-press the version label on About → Diagnostics — adds a "Schedule dummy srardham (30s)" button to verify the snooze flow without waiting for a real ancestor reminder, and a "Pending notifications" section showing exactly what's scheduled (helpful if you've never seen an event reminder — you can see when the next one will actually fire).

### 1.5 — 2026-06-12

v1.5 adds the fifth anga (karana), a sankalpam screen, and live switching between Pambu Vakya and Drik panchanga.

Karana on every day: All five angas — tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga, and the karana — now appear on the Today hero card with end times and "then next" segments when a value changes during the day. The calendar's day-detail sheet (tap any day-of-week header) carries the same five-anga summary.

Live panchanga switch: Settings → Panchanga style flips between வாக்கிய (Pambu Vakya) and த்ரிக் (Drik / modern astronomical) without an app restart. The Today screen, Calendar, Festivals, and home-screen widgets all refresh to the new school within about a second.

Sankalpam (சங்கல்பம்): A new sheet opens from the Today screen rendering the daily Iyer/Iyengar Sanskrit-in-Tamil-script puja sankalpam. Sanskrit lunar month, locative-form tithi/ayana/ritu/nakshatra/yoga/karana, inline end times with Tamil period words (காலை / மதியம் / மாலை / இரவு), and an optional speaker block. Enter your gotra, sutra, family name, and city under Settings → Sankalpam Identity and the recitation fills in automatically. Share button copies the full text for your puja prep.

Today screen redesign: The hero card now folds in the 27-nitya yoga + karana, adds today's weekday under the Gregorian date, and shows everything in the language you've picked in Settings (Tamil or English — your choice, no more stacked bilingual rows).

Widget locale: Changing the app language from Settings now refreshes the home-screen widget immediately instead of waiting for iOS's usual delay.

### 1.4 — 2026-06-12

v1.1 brings iCloud sync, watchOS complications, and a handful of UX polish for the Calendar and Festivals tabs.

iCloud Sync: Family ancestors, your subscription choices, and preferences now sync automatically between iPhone and iPad signed into the same Apple ID. Everything stays in your private iCloud database — Apple-side encryption is always on, and Advanced Data Protection users keep end-to-end encryption with no Apple key custody.

Apple Watch complications: Two new watch-face widgets — today's panchanga (tithi, Tamil month, nakshatra) and your next upcoming ritual events. Available in rectangular, circular, and inline accessory families.

Calendar tab: Tap any month label to open a year/month picker. A "jump to today" button appears whenever you're viewing a non-current month. Below the calendar grid, events for the selected day stack above a "Coming up this month" preview.

Festivals tab: Filter the 106-entry observance list by category — Tarpanam, Major festival, Mahalaya, Monthly recurring, and more.

Family tab: Pull down on the ancestor list to refresh from iCloud. Plus a long-standing scroll bug on the Add Ancestor sheet is fixed — Tithi and Tamil month rows now stay reachable after picking a gothram.

Notifications: srardham and tarpanam observances now also nudge you the day before, in addition to the day-of reminder. Watch and iPhone notifications carry the relationship name (Father / அப்பா) instead of the generic "Ancestor".
