In my eyes there are two main things that this app is missing. The first being some kind of free selection or lasso tool. Currently the only thing available is a box selection which feel strange to use coming from Photoshop and Asprite. The second issue is the brush and fill tools don’t have opacity setting which for me helps with blending colors. Don’t get me wrong the app is pretty solid but has just a few shortcomings. However after some research I noticed the developer has been promising these features for over 2 years. Makes me a bit nervous that they may never be implemented. ### 4/5 — An easy to use program *2020-11-24, version 3.7.7* I am really enjoying the simplicity of this program. It is my favorite out of all of the iPad apps for pixel art. The only tool for me that is missing would be a lasso tool. Otherwise would be a 5/5! ### 3/5 — Really good, not a superstar yet *2020-10-11, version 3.7.6* This app is great, it has most of the needed tools for an easy and useful pixel art workflow, although it’s still missing a couple of stuff to make the it the professional tool it can really be. - a better Apple Pencil integration for starters, it already supports working with the pencil, but it is sometimes buggy, and some behaviors are a bit weird - missing a real rotation feature, you can rotate selections only in chunks of 90deg, which is okay, but not very useful for most cases, specially for character animations and such - missing an animation preview and timeline, the animation workflow can be so much better with a small preview option on the side, and a timeline view per layer, layers should somehow have a relation between the frames, so you can keep one layer per frame and only animate the needed layers - this may seem trivial, but the palette creation process is kind of confusing, it would be cool if the app had a better palette Managment procedure, its okay at the moment, but it’s not always clear what the app wants All that being said, it’s still a very good product, and I really enjoy using it! Compared with other apps like procreate or art studio pro, Pixaki is too limited and too expensive. ### 3/5 — Fantastic app, but could use more work. *2020-09-24, version 3.7.6* I am really enjoying this app and have no regrets about purchasing it. I do however, think it could use a little attention in terms of how smooth it is to use. It is very easy to accidentally switch colours, linger for more than a second in an area and you’ll have dabbed that colour instead, including the grey starting back ground. I find I need a barrier between my hand and my screen, as it is too easy to accidentally add an extra pixel. A lasso tool, symmetry and something to count how many pixels you have in a straight line, as mentioned by other reviewers, would also be extremely beneficial to this app and something I’d love to see added in the future. While I am having great fun with this app at the moment, these few little niggles are interrupting my flow. Once these points are addressed, the app will be perfect! ### 3/5 — Needs a bit more *2020-09-22, version 3.7.6* This app doesn’t feel like it’s worth £20. I’m sorry but it doesn’t support clipping masks, there’s no colour wheel. Lasso tool is missing too. This app has a lot of potential and the fact it supports so many file formats is what really drew me to it. I’ll probably use it as an exporting tool but I doubt I’ll use it for anything more at the moment. ### 4/5 — Great app but missing many basic features *2020-09-18, version 3.7.6* I love the clean interface, and overall it's a great app. I've been using it over a year now to make art for a game in addition to Photoshop. It's pretty effective for large projects as long as they don't get too complex. The shape options like the line and circle work great! It exports to PSD nicely but doesn't import as well. Still, I've used it for months and it's mostly a pleasure. But I have a lot to say with regards to what it lacks. I wouldn't bother if I didn't like the app to begin with. Pixaki is missing many basic tools found in programs a third of its price. There's no lasso tool, so you can only select a rectangle and can't even add or subtract from the selection. You can't select based on color (magic wand), which is critical for pixel art. I'm far from the only person who desires these “features”. There's also no layer grouping or blending effects like soft light. At least there's a continuous/discontinuous option with the paint bucket. The option is clearly labeled, too. The animation tool is fluid, the app is fun and easy to use. But it's kind of pricey. I'm shocked that for the price of a professional piece of software, this app is missing important functionality. The developers don't seem to be responding to the community's call for support in these areas. It's too bad, this could be the pixel art equivalent of Procreate. Like Aseprite but for iOS. As pixel art apps go, this one still seems to be the best one. A bit overpriced, kind of underfunctioning and yet the only real thing out there. Also it’d be nice to have a perfect brush tool (no doubles etc.) ### 3/5 — A few glaring flaws but still pretty good *2020-07-01, version 3.7.6* Okay I use this app a LOT and I do enjoy it most of the time but there are some issues. One of the most common annoyances is that the eraser will act as a pencil, aka I go to erase and end up drawing more. It’s not that intrusive but gets old really quick. Then there is no ability to us the color drop on reference images, when doing sprite work this is annoying as I have to go in and write down each colors hex code when I could just color match a reference imagine. Then the whole color palettes is annoying and obtuse to use. Finally this isn’t a bad thing but a suggestion; there should be a special tool for gradient shading, it’s ridiculous to have to go by hand and place a pixel every other space on canvases as large as 1024x786... it would be a great feature and I’ve used similar on things like photoshop. Still I love this app and will continue using it! I know it’s tempting to purchase this app considering the lack of pixel based drawing apps on iTunes when compared to the Play Store but there is no way in hell that this app is worth its asking price when better alternatives a few free exist on windows that don’t lack these key features. With no update in over 10 months(Time of writing, 6/3/2020) it’s safe to assume the developer took the money and ran so I can not recommend to anyone that purchasing this app is worth it, do not make the same mistake I did. Not unusable in the slightest, but at $25 enough for me to request a refund. Lots of erroneous input from my hand on the screen, managing layers is a bit clunky. All the tools you should need are present in the app, I just couldn’t establish a good workflow. ### 2/5 — Disappointing *2020-07-25, version 3.7.6* Missing even basic digital art features (no clipping mask, alpha lock, color selection, real palette use in the art work, brush customization, selection scaling, etc.) difficult to use for even basic things with a very unappealing ui. The app is not bad at all but it has serious flaws in several areas. If you have used asperity for example you will notice it in just a few minutes. The author seems to have abandoned new functionalities development and he is just making sure the app keeps working on new devices. For less than this you have Procreate or Affinity Designer and they’re complex, powerful designing apps (just not strictly designed for pixel art). In Pixaki is a lack of some very important tools like: - lasso - free rotation for selected objects - distort selected objects - more manipulation for reference layers - canvas rotation during drawing - gradient map - colour wheel for colour selection - more preset shapes like triangles, hexagons etc - different brushes for bigger artworks like opening screens for games etc. - more visible layers on the animation toolbar (it would help with animating characters and different parts of their bodies) - managing palettes is really frustrating as I can’t just simply create a blank one and keep up saving changes to it, everytime I add a new colour I must save it as new palette (seriously?) - set up palette as default for all projects option - more control for gestures (the most annoying for me is double tap apple pencil to open/close side toolbar, I can’t even disable it or change) For this insanely high price developers should set up a discount until the app is completed or start from a way smaller amount. I used everything. Asesprite, i bought almost every pixel app software there is on the app store. This by far has the most potential. Im giving it 5 stars just for that. Hopefully the developers add in what i ask below due to experience. The interface is better then any other softwares out there gving the fact u can add layers to each frame. Asesprite has this also but with a steep learning curve. Pixaki is way better at this approach. Here are the must haves. Needs a rotate tool. Especially for animation purposes. Spinning an object. Turning a head to look upwards. Etc.. Needs palm rejection. This is a big one. Especially for the bigger 12inch ipad screens. I find myself constantly accidentally drawing pixels from my palm. Lasso tool. This is obvious do to the fact we are all most likley using an apple pencil. A dedicated preview window. I know it has the option to see the preview. But almost every other pixel app out there has a dedicated preview window that is seen at all times. This is important because what you see zoomed in looks completely different zoomed out or at its actual size. Things is doesnt really need but would be nice. -More shape tools -More built in color pallettes. For example, Nintendo, Nes, retro -animation template guides. Skeletons that can show to help trace for example a run movement, jump movement. This would be a game changer actually. Theres no app that exist that has a feature like this. ### 5/5 — Pixaki makes basic pixel animation accessible and intuitive *2020-03-29, version 3.7.4* I’ve used Pixaki for my animation practice for over a year, and it’s an exceptional tool. It’s fantastic for quick sketches; however, it scales well to more complex, animated compositions. I hope this studio continues to iterate on this product and enhance its feature set, this tool has the capacity to bring a lot of people into animation.
