## What is PlanetEar?

A God's-eye view of Earth, live — watch flights cross the sky and look through real traffic cameras, right from your iPhone.

PlanetEar turns your iPhone into a window on the living planet. Spin the globe and watch real aircraft cross the sky, track satellites and the ISS passing overhead, feel earthquakes the moment they're reported, check the weather anywhere, peek through thousands of public traffic cameras, and tune in to internet radio from any city you touch. Then keep going — out past the atmosphere to the Solar System itself.

A dozen ways to explore, every one powered by free, openly-licensed public data, rendered natively on your device.

LIVE ABOVE YOU
• Aircraft — real ADS-B flight traffic, tap any plane for its route and details
• Satellites & ISS — see what's overhead right now, with live orbital tracks
• Space weather, launches, and the people currently in space

ON THE GROUND
• Earthquakes — worldwide, live from USGS, sized and coloured by magnitude
• Weather — conditions anywhere you tap, by voice or by touch
• Traffic cameras — thousands of public street and highway cameras across London and California
• Look Around — drop into real street-level imagery
• Internet radio — thousands of live stations; touch a place, hear it

BEYOND THE SKY
• Solar System — fly out to the planets, rendered from real NASA/JPL data
• Natural events, submarine cables, bikeshare, and more — sixteen live layers in all

MADE TO LOOK BEAUTIFUL
• Cinematic native rendering, from orbit to the Solar System
• Optics modes — thermal, night-vision, and more, over the live map
• Voice control — just ask ("weather in Tokyo", "show cameras near London")

PRIVATE BY ARCHITECTURE
There is no server to send your data to. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no tracking, no API keys to configure. Every layer is free and openly licensed, and each source is credited in-app under Settings → Data & Attribution. Location, camera and microphone are used only on your device, only for the features you turn on.

FREE
PlanetEar is free. Just open it and fly.

CAMERA COVERAGE
70,000+ cameras. Webcams worldwide via Windy — most countries are covered (refreshed still images; density varies by region). Live-streaming and traffic cameras in selected regions: United Kingdom (London), United States (California), Norway, Canada (British Columbia and Calgary) and Australia (New South Wales). Of the 70,000+, roughly 2,300 are continuous live streams and 900 are short looping clips — the rest are refreshed stills. More regions are added over time.

JUST ASK — VOICE
Tap the mic and say things like "show me the nearest camera" or "take me to the ISS." Voice commands work in English.

Note: PlanetEar is for information and enjoyment only. Aircraft, satellite, earthquake, weather and camera data are shown for general interest and must not be relied upon for navigation, aviation, emergency or safety-critical use.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.4 — 2026-10-14

New in PlanetEar:

• Travel Intelligence — tap the suitcase, enter a destination, and get an at-a-glance briefing: official UK FCDO government guidance with colour-coded regional warnings, nearby natural-disaster alerts (earthquakes, storms, wildfires via GDACS), and the closest airports.

• Radio Networks — a new layer group: internet radio and the emergency scanner, Ham radio (APRS), and public LoRaWAN mesh-network gateways mapped worldwide.

• Voice video wall — say "show me a multi-screen of the nearest 9 cameras" to fill a live grid instantly.

• A completely refreshed, native iOS look — cleaner, more consistent cards throughout, in both portrait and landscape.

• Lots of polish and performance fixes.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-10-06

• Live video wall — tap several traffic cameras and drag them together to watch multiple feeds at once, in portrait or landscape.
• Steadier flight tracking — smoother following of live aircraft, with helicopters and other types now identified automatically.
• New voice commands — ask for the nearest arriving or departing plane, or fly straight in to anywhere.
• More stable — fixed a crash that could occur when leaving and returning to the app.
• New: send feedback right from Settings. It's just one person building PlanetEar — I read every message, and you can follow @ChrisLewisCox for what's coming next.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-09-24

Turn your phone sideways for PlanetEar's new God's-Eye view.

RECON landscape mode — a cinematic spy-globe with a tactical HUD that leans into 3D as you zoom in.

Two-pane layout — quick tools on the left, live details on the right. Flick a panel to the screen edge to tuck it away, then pull the edge back to bring it in.

Live camera pop-outs — tap any traffic camera for a floating live feed you can drag anywhere, blow up full screen, or pinpoint on the map.

Video wall — drag cameras into the sidebar to build a live multi-camera grid, double-tap a feed to enlarge it, drag the corner to resize, and save your favourite walls to reload any time.

Auto-tilt into 3D as you zoom in (switch it off in Settings if you prefer a flat map).

Plus polish and fixes: your view now stays put when you take a screenshot, and a camera you're watching stays with you when you rotate.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-19

• New: Ships — track live marine vessels (AIS). Add your free key in Layers ▸ Ships.
• New: 70,000+ live webcams worldwide — tap a camera layer to see where to look.
• New: voice command — "Take me to the nearest plane coming in to land."
• Improved: ISS info card with live position, station facts and official NASA links.
• Improved: smoother fly-to and "ride" camera, plus honest camera status with an automatic still fallback when a live stream is down.
• Fixes and polish.
