How to use the app: - Launch the application - Point the camera toward the plant - Take a picture of the full plant, leaves and flowers - Press the “Identify” button - You can also upload an image from your photo gallery How to interpret the results: You will get a percentage representing the certainty level of the identification. Much like human beings, the artificial intelligence used by PlantIDMatch relies on visuals to identify the photographed plant (colors, leaf shapes, possible flowers, etc.). Identification results below 30% are considered low. A high percentage does not necessarily mean that the identification is without error, but means that the plant shares many similarities with one of the 12,500 plants in the database. It made a mistake when I was using a it, but a forgivable one as it’s a plant that is often confused with a close relative. So, three stars. But… that’s where the usefulness begins and ends. No information about the culinary or medicinal uses of the plant, its propagation, whether it’s a friend or a fiend. If you click on “more information”, you’re redirected to… yep. Heart-crushingly, and with zero effort on the part of the developers, you’re sent straight to Wikipedia 🤦‍♀️ This app is so poor that you don’t even get to keep a catalogue of your plant discoveries, so you have to make your own records if you want to remember what you’ve found 😭 In contrast, my rock identification app tells me the age of the rock, how it was formed, how common it is, its varieties, its uses, cautions I should take if I want to polish it, and I get the option of adding it to my library.
