## What is Platen?

A little machine. A page of your own.

Platen brings the feeling of a typewriter to your iPhone: textured paper, imperfect ink, mechanical sounds and a capsule that follows your words. Write letters, capture thoughts and enjoy a quieter place to write.

Choose flat or curved paper, your type size and margins, adjust ink darkness and keep corrections as crossed-out letters or erase them cleanly. Long-press the capsule for night writing, then adjust the lamp’s warmth, intensity and beam.

Find notes with search and monthly groups. Recover them from Recently Deleted, export a backup or enable optional iCloud synchronization with the same Apple Account.

Organise your Box with named dividers and flower tabs, file a letter while you write, and reach paper, ribbon, lamp and sound from a glass quick bar. Choose Fresh, Seasoned, Worn or Clean ink, press an embossed paper mark into every letter, write by lamplight on every screen, and find any setting with search. Hang little charms from your rail.

Start free with three active notes, the original writing setup and two charms. You can try every capsule and charm before you buy. Platen Studio is an optional one-time purchase for more notes, paper and ribbon choices, capsule styles, rail finishes, gardens, photo stamps, additional sounds and print-ready A4, US Letter and A5 sheets, and it includes every pack. Packs can also be bought on their own, each as a one-time purchase: Charms & Pegboard (the full charm library, pegboard, chains and cords), Crafts of the World (country capsules, rail ends and painted margins), Halloween and Día de Muertos. Optional tips support the maker and unlock nothing. No subscription. All future Studio features included.

Each note supports up to 3,000 characters, including spaces and line breaks, in both the free edition and Platen Studio.

### 5/5 — Obsessed

*2026-10-23*

Wow. Just wow. So many nice beautiful touches here. I’ve never been so attracted to the blank page than when using this app. Only request is auto Night Writing mode w device setting but I do love clicking the light on w the capsule. Great touch!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.7 — 2026-10-23

Platen now unfolds with iPhone Duo.
• Half open: your Box and Studio on the left, the page on the right.
• Standing like a tent: the page above, the keys below.
• Fully open: the whole sheet on a paper desk.
• Closed: the front screen, edge to edge.
Also new: a bigger bottom bar and smoother scrolling at night.

### 1.3.6 — 2026-10-23

Give your Box some order: file a letter behind a named divider while you write, and find pressed flowers in one row of tabs.
A glass quick bar on every page puts paper, ribbon, flower, lamp, night light and sound one tap away.
Choose Fresh, Seasoned, Worn or Clean ink, with richer ribbon colours and bolder punctuation.
Night writing now reaches Home and Studio, glowing by lamplight when the machine is shown.
Embossed paper marks press a little letterhead into every letter.
Charms & Pegboard: hang small companions from your rail. Try every one, keep two for free, or add the collection. Included with Studio.
New capsules from Italy, Peru and Japan in Crafts of the World, and a Día de Muertos pack for 1–2 November.
Settings are regrouped, with Find a setting and a Show the machine switch beside Night light. Sounds are grouped by action, with four new ones. A vintage battery sits beside the time, and there's a tip jar for the maker.
Smoother scrolling and quicker menus.

### 1.3.5 — 2026-10-15

Crafts of the World brings country capsules and painted margins together in one pack, also included with Studio.
Celebrate Día de Muertos with a new pack of colourful capsules, rail ends and paper decorations.
Korean typing follows every growing syllable, with richer Fresh and Worn ink.
Chinese typing is steadier when words wrap, and emoji get their own hammer strike.
Find a beginning among 120 first lines. Platen now speaks Ukrainian, too.
The share button is on by default, and the character count is easier to read with large text.
For a quieter Home and Studio, you can hide the machine and rail.
Choose to hear your typewriter even when your phone is in silent mode.
A softer paper launch, quicker picker navigation and sharing, little capsule stories, and tidier Studio settings.

### 1.3.4 — 2026-10-12

The Halloween Pack is here. Open Platen tonight and let the paper stir.

• Seven capsules: Frankenstein sparks as you type; Ghost Lantern; Lantern Pumpkin with a flickering candle; Mummy with swinging bandage tails; Delft Skeleton; Haunted House with windows lighting up one by one; Crystal Storm with lightning.
• At night, cobwebs on the rail sway with the capsule, spiders cross the paper, bats leave the lamp, and thunder rolls with lightning.
• Two rail ends: a carved Jack-o'-Lantern that glows at night, and Mummy Wrap. Add a red balloon tied to the capsule, carnival lights under the rail and wandering footprints.
• Included with Platen Studio, or available on its own.

New crafts for your capsule
• China: cinnabar lacquer, blue-and-white porcelain and white jade. South Korea: celadon with cranes and mother-of-pearl lacquer. Mexico: Tenango embroidery and Oaxacan black clay. Each pack is carved in 3D from real crafts and included with Studio. Jade and brass rail ends join them; packs now sit in tidy rows you swipe.

You asked, we listened
• Flower bookmarks in six colours, with a colour filter in the Box.
• Platen now speaks Russian (Русский). Russian, accented letters (é, ü, ñ…) and Greek get the real typewriter strike and uneven ink.
• Korean, Chinese and Japanese regain the worn, uneven ribbon look. Characters sit at a balanced size beside Latin letters, fitting more on a line; the hammer strikes during composition and confirmation.
• Share short notes with “Centre on page”, the capsule in the middle, and a “Share to Instagram Story” button.
• Follow Platen on Instagram, X and Xiaohongshu from Settings.

Smoother writing
• The first lines stay still, and curved paper no longer briefly flattens.
• Photo stamps stay sharp, keeping their size and place.
• Selecting and pasting no longer scroll the page under your finger.
• Interrupted iCloud sync no longer duplicates letters.
• With the narrow margin, the capsule stops at the rail ends.
• The home screen shows the full month and letter count.

Thank you for the notes — keep them coming through Send feedback.

### 1.3.3 — 2026-10-11

Better for Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and safer for everyone's writing.

• Chinese, Japanese and Korean: the paper stays curved while you compose, characters are never cut off at the top, Traditional Chinese shows every character, and punctuation, menus and translations read naturally.
• Your words are safer: what you write is saved while a word is still being composed and every few seconds while you type without stopping.
• A damaged file can no longer hide your notes or stop backup and iCloud for the others.
• The large widget at night: the lamp's glow now fades smoothly into the glowing ink.
• A letter too long for one keepsake now tells you why.

Thank you for the notes — keep them coming through Send feedback.
