PlayPiano listens while you play real sheet music and grades every note as it happens. Stop, and you get a score you can trust and the exact bars to work on next. Free. No subscription, no ads, no account. Works with any USB or Bluetooth MIDI piano keyboard, and with the on-screen keys when you have none. PICK WHY YOU ARE HERE Tap a piece and choose the session before it starts. Play is yours: every setting unlocked, nothing scored. Coach hands the piece to its practice plan, which picks the passage and the exercise. Grade is one run under fixed conditions, both hands, at tempo, and it counts. The screen says which it would pick, and shows your best score and its trend. NOT A VIDEO LESSON Open a built-in piece or import your own MusicXML or MIDI. The score is engraved like a printed edition and scrolls as you play, and each note lights up right, early, late or missed. A REPORT THAT TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO The review opens on the weakest part of that run and a button that loops the bars which lost the most. Open Breakdown for all seven components; tapping one repaints the score by it alone, so a chord score of 62 turns into bars you can see. A SCORE YOU CAN TRUST The grader measures what a piano teacher listens for: right notes, timing against the beat, note lengths, dynamics from the written marks, how together your chords land, evenness, and pedal. A score is only awarded under the same conditions each time, so a 94 today means the same as a 94 next month. A PRACTICE PLAN MADE FOR THE PIECE Give the app a piece and it reads every bar and writes a plan: short passages in the order a teacher would take them, each with one job. Hands separate. Slow. Broken chords blocked into shapes. Every chapter ends with the passage as written and scored, so you are measured on music, not drills. One new piece a week, and the score file never leaves your device. PRACTICE TOOLS THAT DO THE WORK Wait mode holds the music until you find the right key. Loop any passage by dragging across the bars. Take it up raises the tempo after a clean pass and drops it after a weak one. Switch a hand off and the app plays it while it scores the other. A METRONOME BUILT FOR THE MUSIC STAND Time signatures from 2/4 to 12/8, subdivisions and swing, a tempo trainer, and silent bars to test your pulse. Inside a piece, the click follows the score's own meter. A GUIDED PATH FOR BEGINNERS Fifty-one short units: finding notes, five-finger position, chords, scales, reading, key signatures and your first real pieces. Your progress stays on your device, and anonymous reports can be switched off in About. ## Version history (last 5 releases) ### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-18 Open a piece and pick why you are here: Play to explore with nothing judged, Coach to work on what a plan found hard, or Grade for one scored run. The score on your library card now always means the same thing, a graded attempt, never a gentle run at half tempo. - Practice plans: open a piece and get a short plan built from it, with passages that build toward playing it whole. - A weekly target replaces the daily streak, so missing one day is no longer starting over. - Your best score and how it is trending are shown before you open a piece, not buried after. - Fixed: a sharp or flat printed in the music is now read exactly as written, so a note you played right is no longer marked wrong. The second time through a repeat is graded like the first. ### 1.2.3 — 2026-09-15 Learn mode waits for you, then moves on. - Learn mode could stop on a key you were already holding, and the music never continued. Now it moves on. - Notes on the hand the app plays for you are no longer counted as wrong. - Sharps and flats are matched exactly as they are written. - Fixes a crash during practice, and prompts that covered the notes you were reading. ### 1.2.0 — 2026-09-11 See exactly how you play, and what to do about it. - Every note is coloured by what actually went wrong: early, late, released early, held too long, missed. - The report opens on one thing to work on, with a button that starts practising that exact passage in a loop. - Tap any note or bar for the detail: what was written, what you played, and by how much. - Play back your own run and hear the mistake rather than reading about it. - Zoom the score, or hide the bars you got right. - A seven part score out of 100, with the weakest part called out. - Keyboard calibration keeps timing fair, whatever keyboard you use. - Guided runs with Wait for me are for learning and are not scored. - Anonymous usage stats help improve the app; switch them off any time in About. ### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-07 A bigger course, and a new way to train your ear. - The path is now 51 units across 7 chapters, from middle C to both hands together. - Reading starts on the grand staff in the very first reading lesson. - New Echo drill: listen to a short phrase, then play it back. - Chords now cover C, F and G7, with a new Amazing Grace arrangement to play them in. - Scales add hands together and contrary motion, with a steady click to keep time. - Pieces and drills open on two tracks, so a hard piece never holds your practice up. - Drill progress starts fresh on the new levels. - Fixes: the practice screen no longer lists an idle network session as a connected keyboard, loop handles snap to the nearest barline, the intro clears the Dynamic Island, and the coach tour points at the right spot. ### 1.0.9 — 2026-09-06 A better first day, and a way back tomorrow. Coaching - Short tips the first time you meet something: Play, the settings panel, Listen, Practise mode, the metronome ruler, the trainer panes. It never starts on its own. Habit - A daily practice reminder, if you want one: pick a time after your first practice day.
