Now it’s moved to a lottery type system which was marketed to ‘reward everyone’ but in reality it just gives you tickets to a prize draw that you’re very unlikely to win, even if, like me you scan everything you recycle! I will still use it as i like to see how much waste we’re producing as a household, as a way to try and reduce it but I preferred it before it changed! ### 2/5 — Not as good as it was *2025-10-08, version 2.2.5* It was good when you could earn little rewards for recycling, but now you can’t you go into a raffle which you never win. So might have to stop using it as no point. ### 2/5 — Used to be good but now poor *2025-09-07, version 2.2.3* I used to enjoy this app mainly for financial rewards (I personally think the recycling aspect is not that logical as you can just put the rubbish anywhere and feels like greenwashing, the value is clearly in the data), but it's now just become super confusing how I get rewarded for scanning barcodes. Would not recommend as it just feels like a waste of time, it's probably quicker and more cost effective to just throw it away and check council websites imo ### 3/5 — Was ok *2025-04-10, version 2.1.28* After using this for almost a year it has now changed to German ? As I don’t speak the language it’s very annoying and I don’t know how to get in touch for help? If I can’t correct it I will have to delete it as it’s making it too difficult ### 2/5 — Gone downhill *2024-12-29, version 2.1.21* I used too really enjoy this app and it helped me get a few extra pounds too put into my savings account for place of my own but since the update it’s awful. I can’t seem to gain any points no matter how much I recycle it just gets turned into xp. It’s a shame because I used to really like using this app(hence why the 2 stars and not just 1) ### 2/5 — No further encouragement to recycle!! *2024-11-07, version 2.1.17* The latest update has zapped the fun!!! I lost my points … I no longer see them increasing which was an incentive to continue with the app now with every scan it tells you you’ve earned ‘x’ points but your balance doesn’t change then you suddenly see a few points added when you acheive a challenge - which I add are lengthier to complete for regular household user!! THEN thin cardboard packaging from fruit/veg now randomly shows as needs to be recycled at a ‘recycling point’ yet a cereal packet is accepted - same thickness so whats the difference?!?!? Not only that but the app no longer works on my phone advises to reset my password - which i did .. still doesn’t work so can now only use on a tablet - lining up the camera to scan is fiddlier than zapping with your phone. Overall the update hasn’t encouraged me to keep using!! ### 1/5 — Updated app is terrible *2024-10-30, version 2.1.16* I loved using this app and keeping a check on how we were doing recycling at home. It was great to earn a few pence too. The updated app is now like playing a stupid game with the different levels & pushing you towards their partners. It’s just not worth the effort of scanning the items now so I’ve deleted it. ### 1/5 — Used to be great, now it’s rubbish *2024-10-13, version 2.1.15* This used to be a great app, with incentives for recycling. Now it feels utterly pointless, with the introduction of virtual ‘rewards’ that I don’t want or care about. Like a poor man’s Pokemon awarding you XP and a path on a journey. Bring back the old system, because as soon as I have enough coins to cash out I won’t be using this new version any more. ### 1/5 — Points Gone *2024-10-12, version 2.1.15* Stated collecting points and stopped using the app for a while came back an all my points had disappeared not starting again just to have them deleted later down the line. ### 2/5 — What’s happened? *2024-10-09, version 2.1.15* I have no idea what this app is all about anymore. Used to be one of”coin” for scanning and recycling. Not anymore. I keep scanning but my tally doesn’t seem to be increasing. The help pages aren’t much use either. Please either revert to how it used to be or explain the new fangled app. I can’t be the only one who’s beginning to wonder whether it’s worth it. ### 1/5 — Changed for the worse *2024-10-08, version 2.1.15* I was really enjoying using this app, although the amounts you could earn each month were capped, it felt like a nice reward to save up. They’ve now just updated it and there’s very little chance of earning any coins to exchange for cash. You now earn XP for scanning recycling which don’t exchange for cash, so not sure what the point of those is? The missions only unlock at certain points, so basically you’ll need to use it for months before you get very little back. Unless you buy items from their ‘brand partners’ and get a small amount cash back. It’s now very complicated to use and I don’t really see the point of it any more. ### 3/5 — Mixed bag after update *2024-10-05, version 2.1.15* Before I updated the app I had a bunch of coins saved up to get the top voucher amount when it became available. However since updating it they’ve been completely wiped out and I’m back down to 0. This might be a bug or planned with the way the coins now work, but either way it’s very frustrating. Other than that the update is a bit mixed. ***Edit: after I wrote this there was an in app message about points and it mentioned an email and notification sent about a week before. I don’t have notifications turn on but eventually found the email in my spam folder, even though I’d previously had emails from Bower. It would probably work better if the in app message was included before to make sure people see it.*** The increased coin amounts for vouchers is disappointing, but being able to get multiple a month is nice. I’m not sure on these missions you need to finish to get coins now. The amount you get is alright but overall feels like you’ll get less than you used to when it was per item recycled. I’m assuming as well that if you complete a mission early there’s no way to get more coins until the next one is available, which could easily put you off using the app since there’d be no point. ### 2/5 — Great but…. *2024-10-04, version 2.1.15* Really liked this app when I first found it, I liked to track the recycling we have at home, I also liked the fact that it’s supporting charity. Recently they have updated the app and what the heck have they done?!?! The donation to charity seems to have disappeared, it’s feel and looks like a game that people play but the most annoying thing about this now is the vibration when you scan and process your recycling. The whole update is so off putting that I’m actually debating deleting the app, which would be a shame. Come on Bower, sort it out! ### 1/5 — Points taken away *2024-10-04, version 2.1.15* I accumulated the points from January onwards and decided from August to convert into monetary vouchers. As there’s only 3 vouchers able to be claimed each month, only part of the balance could be transferred every 4 weeks. October arrives and the company has changed policy meaning all accumulated points not transferred are wiped. Very demotivating! ### 1/5 — Rubbish *2024-09-30, version 2.1.15* This app was awesome until they messed with it,now you only earn coins from products they are partnered with which is a shame really as I’ve looked at their partners and I do y use their products so now the app is not of any use to me ### 3/5 — Update has caused issues *2024-06-23, version 2.1.9* I recently did an update and now certain items which I recycled all the time are stuck not being recycled in the app. The app won’t let me add a new bin. Not sure what’s happening as the app is really good but after the update I’ve definitely noticed problems ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Bower *2026-05-24, version 2.4.5* Don’t bother it’s not worth it, I have deleted it since the new update. ### 1/5 — Dropped points *2026-05-20, version 2.4.4* The App often drops points that have been earned. More and more barcodes don’t match the items being recycled. Plastic trays with cardboard sleeves aren’t counted. Whilst partnering with Ocado, there is no way to recycle items that Ocado take that are only recycled at stores. Also seems that once you get to a certain number of items waiting to be recycled at store, they get deleted. As of latest update, end of May, it no longer scans barcodes and the help page on the web is not available. Can only assume it’s starting to fail As an app and now just a waste of time. ### 1/5 — Not as good as it was *2026-04-04, version 2.3.3* It was good when you could earn little rewards for recycling, but now you can’t you go into a raffle which you never win. It’s pointless using as u don’t get rewarded ### 1/5 — Confusing & cluttered *2026-02-02, version 2.2.10* I previously used the app when it was called Bower and made the occasional £5 here or there. Since the update the design of the app has become really cluttered and confusing to navigate. I scan countless things but no longer earn coins. Apparently I may earn something else called EXPs but it’s impossible find out how many I have and what they’re actually worth. I can’t see the point of it anymore. The app sends you round in circles with no answers. The worst thing is the app claims to be helping the environment but they have AI customer service- and AI is harmful to the environment!! ### 1/5 — Dropped points *2025-12-18, version 2.2.8* The App often drops points that have been earned. Also seems that once you get to a certain number of items waiting to be recycled at store, they get deleted. ### 1/5 — Don’t both *2025-07-04, version 2.2.1* Started using the app and was happy to get £1.50 a month on average, it did help me to recycle that but more then I was already… But then the update came with the raffle, Now you basically can’t earn anything, so deleting the app ### 1/5 — Waste of TIME *2025-02-19, version 2.1.26* Started my Bower app with 35 Brita filter scan, seen the 625 yellow points in the quick pop-up window that disappeared within a second, although that was never been credited. I contacted the customer service, they said everything is alright. After 6 weeks I only have tiny 60 points however I scanned tonnes of items on daily basis, unlocked many levels, added new bar codes etc. Well… this app is a deception, no money out of it. ### 1/5 — Terrible app *2025-01-14, version 2.1.21* Scanned thousands of items but have barely made £1 and when I go to cash out says I need £1.60 minimum! ### 1/5 — Disappointed *2024-12-05, version 2.1.20* Really liked the app when I first downloaded it but since the update I have lost all the coins I earn’t over the previous 18 months which I didn’t get a chance to convert. My partner who has been doing the recent scanning has scanned thousands of items for little progress since the app changed which is extremely disheartening and there seems little point continuing as all we seem to be doing is wasting our time. We recycle everything we can anyway which we will continue to do but we shall not waste our time anymore scanning it first when there is little to be gained from it. ### 1/5 — Was great, but……. *2024-11-04, version 2.1.17* It was a good little app, since the update, all changed, not worth doing now, so little reward. All great again. The app was working great until this morning and now it’s like I’m a new user. So far I’ve been asked what language I use, there are no product details on anything I frequently recycle and now I’ve got to start again with adding bins and can’t recycle anything until I do - even my own bins. I’ve been using this app for over 2 years now but I’m seriously thinking of stopping using it. Please reinstate all the details that were there yesterday. Very easy to use and full in certain products that haven’t been registered yet. Only thing I will say is that I wish there was an update feature on bin drop-off locations. Sometimes if a user has forgotten a certain category of trash that can be disposed of at their drop-off it stays that way. Adding the app to confirm you’ve completed your recycling of their plastic milk containers couldn’t be easier. You can use your own recycling bins at home as your deposits and get a little refund for your trouble. Excellent idea.
