## What is Pneumotox.?

Pneumotox®: The drug-induced/iatrogenic respiratory disease website & App.
The companion website and App Cardiotox® cover drug-induced cardiotoxicity.
By Philippe Camus MD. Professor (emeritus) - Board-certified in pulmonary medicine and cardiology,- Université Bourgone-Europe, Dijon, France.
Pneumotox is an aid to the diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases and reactions suspected of being induced by drugs, chemicals, and of iatrogenic origin.
Causality assessment and exact diagnosis are the full responsibility of the user.
Pneumotox is designed to provide regularly-updated information on drugs causing pulmonary toxicity (>1,700 agents), patterns of involvement (>820) and bibliography (>10,700 as of August 2026) within a few minutes. That may be the crux in emergency situations. Yet, double-checking in and from other sources is indicated.
Pneumotox rests on a bibliographic repository built since 1978, which amounts to >50,000 references overall, the vast majority of which is indexed in PubMed. All references were and are carefully reviewed for reliability and causality by the founder, then indexed under the corresponding drug or agent in Pneumotox.
Pneumotox can be assessed by causative drug(s), chemicals, herbals, substances of abuse, inhaled incl. e-cigarettes, vaping, inhalants, gases, ionizing radiations (providing the list of patterns), or by patterns of involvement (providing the list of causal drugs/agents).
Drug names are generic (International Nonproprietary Names (INN), alphabetical), not brand ones. It may be appropriate to check the exact composition of any proprietary drug, as any other added substance or excipient can be pneumotoxic. Matching generic and brand names which differs with country is the responsibility of the user. Patterns are grouped by families according to the main anatomic site of involvement.
If a drug or drug reaction is listed in Pneumotox, that does not equate the patient is demonstrating toxicity. A “Diagnosing DIRD” window in Pneumotox (top panel) may help secure the diagnosis. Lack of case or cases in the literature or in Pneumotox does not exclude a diagnosis of drug toxicity as there may be unpublished cases, you may be seeing the first case ever, or we may have overlooked some information. In such situations, please inform us; Pneumotox cannot be held responsible. Pneumotox can be contacted by mail 7/365 for complementary information, tailored literature, and/or data on rechallenge with the drug.
In any patient, particularly the ones with acute respiratory failure, ARDS or acute bronchospasm, exposure to drugs, substances, and/or chemicals must be done exhaustively with the patient, and if needed with the family, health professionals, pharmacy and/or law enforcement personel. And prompt removal of the drug can be lifesaving. Caution: drug withdrawal can produce a flare of the underlying condition for which the drug was exactly given. Deliberate rechallenge can be hazardous as fatal relapse of the respiratiory reaction can supervene.
Early sampling of body fluids for drug and/or metabolites is indicated as early as possible, particularly in the severely ill. Knowledge of toxidromes and antidotes capable of countering adverse effects of drugs or chemicals is essential (ex: PMID ).
Where in doubt, consider double-checking PubMed, your affiliated Safety for Medicines Department/Agency and the Pharmacovigilance Department of drug companies. They may host more and/or undisclosed information.
Patients should be reassured as such incidents are rare oveall. If needed, they are invited to consult with their treating physicians.
Monitoring common causal agents (with red digits in stars) for impending toxicity is strongly advised.
You may contact Pneumotox anytime through the contact window.

### 3/5 — Great resource, compatibility issues in app

*2021-08-14*

Very useful resource. However numerous fields appear blank in the app and it is apparent that there should be text where there is none visible. As a result I’ll go back to using the site through a browser.

### 2/5 — Need optimised for iOS 8 with 6 & 6 plus support

*2015-01-21*

### 5/5 — Great App

*2013-03-10*

A few bugs but fantastic resource. Glad to have on my hand held device.

### 5/5 — Great to see the app as a companion

*2012-07-18*

The online version is a fantastic resource to Pulm/CCM providers. This makes it even more convenient to have the right information close at hand any time.
