If you have that option on, it will try to update your offline maps, but only when you need them. It should update them when they're due an update. It does not. It updates them when they're overdue an update and you want to use them. And on top of that, it won't let you use offline maps that are overdue an update. It will behave like they don't exist. Terrible UX. The developer should just delete the automatic update feature.
