## What is PocketPhonics Stories?

This award-winning app is the one to get if you are passionate about your child learning to read, and your child is aged between 4 and 6, or older but needs some extra help with reading.

It teaches phonics and handwriting (including joined up). It has a first set of storybooks for them to read, written specifically for children learning to read using the app.

Your child will prefer our books to paper books, because they help them read - if they get stuck, they tap a word to get help sounding it out. You will prefer our books, because the quizzes check they can read the words and understand them.

The books get progressively harder, but kids don’t realise because they are getting better at reading all the time.

Our apps are used in hundreds of American elementary schools. One of only nine education apps awarded the top A+ rating by Balefire Labs.

The app is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Children master these skills:

* writing letters
* recognising 72 letter sounds (e.g. ‘ch’ are the letters that make the initial sound in ‘chat’)
* blending letter sounds together to make words (e.g ‘ch-a-t’)
* hearing a word and selecting its written form (e.g. the app says, “chat”, the child has to select ‘chat’ from a group of words - some of which are similar to chat)

How it works
* 7-day free trial with no commitment and full access
* The £1.49 monthly and £14.99 annual subscription unlock access to all books and phonics levels for an unlimited number of children
* Once subscribed, your subscription auto-renews each month or annually. However, you can easily turn auto renew off via the Settings app
* Payment will be charged to your iTunes account at confirmation of purchase
* Subscription automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current period
* Cannot cancel current subscription during its subscription period
* Any unused portion of a free trial period, if offered, will be forfeited when the user purchases a subscription to that publication, where applicable

### 5/5 — First time

*2024-12-31*

Ava thought the so good, she read the book easily 🤩

### 5/5 — Excellent App to teach/reinforce reading skills

*2024-03-10*

I cannot say enough good things about this app. It has helped all three of my boys on their reading journeys. My youngest son is currently using it now. He is in first grade and struggling with phonics at school. Since having him practice and play on this app, he is now steadily progressing! The best part is that he doesn’t feel like he is doing “work” — just having fun. I cannot imagine a scenario where one would regret purchasing this app. It’s great!

### 5/5 — A great app

*2021-10-17*

This app has worked wonders for my youngest. He is about to turn 6 and has been struggling with reading for a little while.
We have been using the app for only one week and his word recognition and sounding has improved so much.
He works on a couple of activities a day and loves it.
Thank you to the developers for making this incredible app.

### 5/5 — Amazing App

*2020-09-08*

My youngest age 7 has just started back at school and I want to help give her a boost in her reading. Being the eldest in her class I feel she should be more advanced than the rest and noticed her struggling with the sounds. Most likely down to me not knowing how to use phonics correctly as the school never had a parents class to teach us. Through reading the info along with this app I understand it all so much better and my daughter has actually surprised me as to how much she already knows. Through reading the info I have found that her school is one of many that use books that don't focus on sounds she has learnt through phonics as the funding using in place to buy the proper books. Something I will look into through the PTFA. This app not only give the the proper words for sounds they learn but gets them tracing and saying the new sounds as they go along and she has so much fun answering the questions to word sounds correctly, any she gets wrong she is eager to correct. I’m on my 7 day free trail atm but once it’s up I will purchase for the year as it will be well worth the money as it has already got her confidence up. Thank you so much for this app I will recommend to other adults at my children’s school. Xx

**Developer response:** Thank you for taking the time to write this. If your school is interested in using the app, ask them to email support@appsinmypocket.com

### 1/5 — Did they have to lobotomize the narrator?

*2020-06-22*

(See title) - my toddler is supposed to be intrigued by this?

**Developer response:** I'm afraid I'm not sure what you mean by, "Did they have to lobotomize the narrator?" If you email me at support@appsinmypocket.com, I'll do my best to help.

### 4/5 — Needs a part 2

*2020-06-18*

We love it. But we have finished it now ready for a part 2 or higher level. Do you have anything like that?

**Developer response:** Not at the moment. I would love to do it though.

### 2/5 — Written instructions for people who can’t read

*2020-06-02*

The app relies on displaying written instructions like “When I say a sound, tap the letter”. These instructions aren’t said out loud. But the whole point of the app is the user is learning to read. When you can’t read it is confusing and surreal for the iPad to just start hissing at you. My 3 year old had no idea he was supposed to push the ‘s’ button when that happened

**Developer response:** Hi, there are spoken instructions in the app like you suggest. It's possible that these have been turned off in the player settings. Or, (and this is something that has happened before), the sound is going to a some bluetooth headphones and thus you are not hearing it from the iPad. If you get in touch at support@appsinmypocket.com, I'll be able to help.

### 5/5 — Pocket phonics

*2020-05-17*

I love this app, my daughter has special needs and I can’t believe the progress she has made since using this app. She is seven and works at level 2-3 well since we started using this app just over a week ago she is reading sentences and ever did good on a spelling test I did with her.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2020-05-01*

My daughter and I do this app, she learns and the coin/certificate collecting can be great motivation when she’s not really in the mood...

### 5/5 — Brilliant app

*2020-03-30*

An excellent app at an affordable price. It’s really helping my reception aged son to carry on his reading while the schools are closed. He loves to do the tests at the end of each book and get his certificates.
The app is set up very clearly and the sounding out of the words good.
