Honestly, it is beyond awful. Maybe, somewhere, there is something in here but honestly I don’t know. I run my own business so would like to think I’m not completely thick but this software makes me feel like the village idiot. If you are from YNAB please, please look at reviews online first before you jump as this is honestly one of the most frustrating things I have ever done. Original review: I’ve moved over from YNAB to PocketSmith and I have to say, so far, so bad. I was lured by the promise of bank integration and, in fairness it does this very well. That’s probably where the good ends though and the bad begins. Honestly, I’ve been setting it up since what feels like the last age. It takes forever. Even after owning it for a couple of months I still am not really close to getting what I want out of it (a budget). I’ve got ChatGPT and Claude working around the clock and their standard answer to most things is “yeah, that’s just a limitation of PocketSmith” or “you’ve hit a well known frustration”. Maybe the mobile app is amazing. Who knows, you have to configure it all on web and I will probably be dead before I complete that. If your are on YNAB and thinking “I wonder if it’s worth the pain of moving so I don’t have to manually import transactions?” the answer is “would you jam a rusty knife in your own eye?”. Getting started in PocketSmith can take a bit of groundwork, especially if you’re moving from a different budgeting style and trying to shape it around the way you already manage money. AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can often send people in the wrong direction. They’re not trained on the ins and outs of PocketSmith, and they can present assumptions as fact, particularly around what is or isn’t possible in the product. Just wanted to update my review and thank you for your response. Unfortunate that Apple forced you into that corner. However, i saw no gmail log in option on the app. Can you please fix it ### 3/5 — Google Login Option *2025-08-09, version 3.5.3* Would be great to have a Google login option so those who have setup an account using Google can use the app. ### 2/5 — Fading patience *2025-06-24* Started off well a year ago, but I’m considering moving back to YNAB as their budget logic is far superior and overcomes any pain of manually uploading transactions. PS is a really detailed and comprehensive financial management tool on the website app and the auto import to all our Aus institutions was awesome. Very good for monitoring spending and net worth across multiple or complex financial accounts and assets. Great customisable dashboards. Not great at daily money management of spending which I would think most people are needing assistance with. Recently Aus super has introduced MFA and our data via Yodlee hasn’t synced for a month or two with no apparent solution timeframe and ability to manually update. Not a PS issue I know but it’s one ecosystem to me. The new budget rollover feature lacks reasonable logic with previous and current month available budget not making any mathematical sense. It also assumes you will spend every dollar of unused rollover budget this month and calculates the overspend to be the sum of all of these amounts, rather than it being a larger budget to use. The app is next to useless now and data seems totally divorced from the website, with duplicate entries and multiple requests to categorise transactions that are categorised on the website. My partner cannot easily access and categorise transactions on her phone which is crucial when dealing with family budgets. **Developer response:** Thanks for your review, and we're sorry about your experience. The calendar doesn’t show any graphs nor does the transaction screen. There are so many features missing from this app. Its usefulness is highly questionable. ### 4/5 — Useful but it could improve a bit *2025-05-02, version 3.5.3* The budget setting up process should have less clicks in it. But once all is set it’s amazing. ### 3/5 — Good but could be better *2025-02-22* I like many features of the platform , but however I find there could be improvements such as an increase of categories of transactions since it’s bit too simple in comparison to my banning apps version. Also I had technical issues with the linking with certain investment accounts. Also I wish I could do more things on the app that didn’t require web browser. I think even having a mobile app is doing you more damage than good. It looks half baked and sends a poor message. I am a long term YNAB user and was looking for something else that looks a bit more modern and has better reporting capabilities. Whilst the underlying system of this product does tick those boxes, not providing a fully functioning app for users is borderline suicide. Who carries a laptop with them? People want to use their mobile device, not spin up a Web Browser. **Developer response:** We appreciate the feedback. I get paid fortnightly so the app is pretty much useless as it only shows me data for a whole month. Example 1: When I enter Home Depot in the transaction search box, the app quickly lists all Home Depot transactions but it doesn't give me the total of all transactions it found. The desktop application does. Example 2: The desktop application allows me to display budgets for any time period. I can pull up This Month, Today, Last Year or any date range I choose. Sidekick only allows me to display the current month. So, I give the truly awesome Pocketsmith Desktop Application 5+ Stars and Sidekick only gets 3 Stars. I really hope someday the Sidekick Team catches up to the Pocketsmith Team **Developer response:** Appreciate your feedback. Not the most user friendly. The Budget function is quite confusing and it could be further improved. Being a single entry finance system, there is a risk of making errors specially for bank accounts that relies on manual entries. You need a desktop size computer to access basic features. Needs to at least have the feature set of Toshl on the app. The rest you don’t need to access more than monthly, so that’s fine on desktop. Also, can’t create a budget for different combinations of expenses. Each individual expense type has its own budget. Has access to a great range of banks in Australia and has people actively working on the software, so would change in a minute if you could do the basics on the app or even phone sized web. **Developer response:** We’re sorry that we haven’t met your expectations. Again a lot of the websites functionality is missing here with the app particularly with sorting options, you can’t select individual or multiple banks to view if you are someone who does have multiple accounts this is frustrating. The website also isn’t ideally formatted for Mobile view so you should be using it on a desktop or tablet. **Developer response:** Appreciate your feedback, Shaun. This app is very basic and limited. ### 1/5 — Not a functional app for Canadians *2024-01-25* After paying the ridiculously high price for the subscription, I found out that two major Canadian credit cards that I use will not sync with this app. So it is useless in budgeting and managing my spending. **Developer response:** For the sake of our customers, we’ve had to adjust how we support Canadians as landscape for automatic bank feeds there has become untenable. All available Canadian bank feeds are still able to be added, but these are offered strictly on an as-is basis. To acknowledge this degraded experience, we offer a 30% to Canadian users. Do get in touch! ### 1/5 — No Google sign in option *2023-11-21, version 3.4.5* I signed up on the desktop web version and used my Google account to do I pay a subscription to use the Service and unfortunately via the app. There is no Google sign in option only username and password therefore I am unable to use the app which is very frustrating. ### 1/5 — No SSO on mobile app *2023-09-15, version 3.4.5* No option to sign in with Google as Identity Provider. I’ve got an account that I created using my gmail but I can’t use that account to sign in on mobile. However it works on my desktop. ### 1/5 — Can’t login with Google *2023-08-23, version 3.4.5* The website supports accounts setup using Google’s OAuth, but the app only accepts username & password and so is unusable if you normally login using your Google account. ### 1/5 — Used to be good… *2022-01-05, version 3.4.3* Since they migrated to Yodlee account syncing has become inconsistent with constant errors. If accounts aren’t syncing then data is unreliable. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Great App for managing my finances *2025-10-31, version 3.5.3* A great product for having up to date information about my finances. Budgets are easy to set up and manage. I no longer need to manually enter my transactions into a money managing tool such as Money Dancer. Daily checking of all Bank Accounts transactions occur in one app which is great for monitoring any suspicious transactions. A bonus is the product is not US oriented and more suited to our local business environment in Australia. ### 5/5 — Best budgeting App in Australia *2025-04-15* I’ve looked at several budgeting apps and, used in conjunction with the website subscription, this is by far the most useful budgeting app I’ve come across. The ability to sync with my Australian bank and set rules on incoming transactions to automatically categorise is very helpful. Using this app, I can easily see where my money is going and can easily navigate through each category to track spending, recategorise individual transactions, and set category rules within the app. One bit of feedback - it would be great to be able to set a custom time period within the app like you can on the website. Its functionality is just what I was looking for (for the price)…. However…. Keep in mind that the main config needs to be done on a web browser, and the web page does not display well on a mobile screen… Functionality wish list: - Add an option to apply a rule to all history transactions automatically. This would make the mobile app much more user friendly.
