## What is Pointfield Camera?

Converts your camera and your videos into abstract particle images you move with your fingers.

Pointfield Camera resamples the live image into tens of thousands of particles. Each particle sits at a random position and takes the color of the image at that point, a stochastic form of stippling. Fine detail drops out while shape, light and color remain, so it works best with simple subjects and strong contrast: a face against a bright window, a silhouette, bold colors.

The particles are drawn on the GPU in real time and respond to multi-touch, motion and haptics:

- Drag: the speed and direction of your finger feed a fluid simulation. The particles are carried by the flow, then ease back into place. A faster stroke throws them further.
- Tap: a wave travels outward from the point of contact.
- Double-tap: a radial burst pushes the particles outward; they grow as they travel, so the burst appears to come toward you.
- Pinch: a vortex pulls the image into a spiral between your fingers. Release and it reforms.
- Tilt: the motion sensors shift the field toward the lower edge.
- Shake: resets the field.
- Haptics: the Taptic Engine gives each gesture its own response.

Nine sliders control the abstraction: brightness, contrast, particle size, glow, density, random size, random position, tilt response, and a mix with the original image. Contrast scales each particle by the brightness beneath it, as in a halftone. Each slider starts at 0 in the middle, the default look.

Sources: the front or back camera, the included sample video, or any video from your Photos. In landscape, wide videos fill the full width of the screen.

Recordings of the particle field can be saved or shared. They have no sound.

All processing happens on the device. Nothing is uploaded.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.1 — 2026-09-25

- New icon
- New drag: the particles move with your finger, and a faster swipe throws them further
- Double-tap now bursts the image toward you
- Pinch to drain the picture into a whirlpool
- Haptics for drag, pinch, burst and the sliders
- New controls: the sliders slide out from the left edge, and the button bar tucks away. The sliders show themselves the first few times
- New sliders: Mix with original, Contrast, Random size and Random position. Every slider starts at 0 in the middle
- Landscape: sliders on the left edge, buttons on the right, and both slide out of the way. Wide videos fill the full width of the screen
- Your video: turn any video from your Photos into particles

### 1.0 — 2026-09-04
