Polis Akademisi, 3201 Sayılı Emniyet Teşkilatı Kanunun 18. Maddesi gereğince orta ve üst kademe yöneticilerini yetiştirmek üzere, Polis Enstitüsü adı altında bir yıllık meslek içi Yüksek Okul olarak 06 Kasım 1937 yılında kurulmuştur. Polis Enstitüsü'ndeki Eğitim Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı Talim Terbiye Kurulu Kararlarıyla 1940 yılında iki yıllık, 1962 yılında üç yıllık yüksek okullar içerisine alınmış olup 1980 yılından itibaren öğretim süresi 4 yıla çıkarılmıştır. Anayasamızın 132. Maddesi ve Yükseköğretim Kanununun 2. Maddesi gereğince, ayrı bir kanuni yapıya kavuşturulmuş ve 06 Aralık 1984 tarihinde 3087 Sayılı Polis Yüksek Öğretim Kanunu ile Polis Akademisi adını alıp 4 yıllık lisans düzeyinde eğitim-öğretim veren bir Yükseköğretim kurumu haline getirilmiştir. Emniyet Teşkilatı'nın ihtiyaç duyduğu diğer branşlardaki personel ihtiyacını karşılamak amacıyla, 3201 sayılı Emniyet Teşkilatı Kanunu kapsamında 1989 yılında değişiklik yapılarak 1991 yılından itibaren Fakülte Yüksek Okullar (FYO) adı altında öğrenci alınmaya başlanmış ve bu hizmetlerin yürütülmesi için Polis Akademisi görevlendirilmiştir. Polis Akademisi; 25 Nisan 2001 tarih ve 4652 sayılı kanunla, Polis Üniversitesi anlayışıyla yeniden yapılandırılmıştır. 2015 yılında 6638 sayılı yasa ile Güvenlik Bilimleri Fakültesi kapatılmış, yerine Polis Amirleri Eğitimi Merkezi Müdürlüğü kurulmuştur. Aynı kanunla Fakülte Yüksek Okullar (FYO)'da kapatılmıştır.
