### 2/5 — Poor user interface

*2017-12-27, version 2.0.6*

The plates are good, as you would expect from Pooleys, but the app is very poorly designed and implemented. For instance, to download all plates to be available off-line (which I am sure most people will want to do) you have to wade through a PDF instruction manual to find out that you have to type 'Pooleys' manually into the search box in order to make the menu choice appear. That is quite stunningly idiotic! Unfortunately that is not the only amateurish aspect of the design. I hope Pooleys did not pay much for it.

### 2/5 — Lacks refinement

*2016-10-08, version 2.0.4*

App works. Just. But the user interface is confusing and the organisation of plates almost nonexistent. Searching for plates by category does not reveal all the results it should. Also, updating some plates seems to have placed them outside the main EG list and there is no synchronisation between devices. So, my favourite plates on the iPad do not show up when I access the app from my iPhone.

### 2/5 — New version still useless

*2015-08-08, version 2.0.2 (2.0.10)*

Despite the recent update to the app this app is still barely usable. The save all function never works, it downloads the first 5 or 6 plates and then gets stuck. This is the same on any device I've tried the app with. Having downloaded all the plates individually ( Which took an age ) the plates still appear unavailable when searching for then offline!

How is this app not up to scratch, surely it's nothing more than a simple file viewer?!?

### 1/5 — Don't waste your money

*2015-03-12, version 1.8.1*

I purchased the pooleys iplates thinking I could use it in sky demon. Oh no they want you take out another subscription for that. Rip off and complete waste of money. Do they really expect me to close down my moving map to open their app to view the plates. It just complicates matters and distracts me from my flying.

### 1/5 — Can't register

*2014-12-13, version 1.8.1*

Can't register. Fill out email and password click register then screen goes white and that's it.

### 1/5 — If only...

*2013-04-05, version 1.8.1*

I could log on! Have tried several times to register and when asked to sign on it throws back an error relating to my email / password.

Oh well, I'll stick to the old fashioned paper charts as they seem to work...

### 1/5 — Rubbish

*2012-11-06, version 1.8*

Steer well clear of this app. It is rubbish.

### 1/5 — Mr C

*2012-11-04, version 1.8*

this is the worst app I have ever bought
And would like my money back!

### 1/5 — At best Rubbish, at worst possibly Fraud

*2012-10-31, version 1.8*

If you want an e-version of Pooleys bound version (revised annually) at an inflated price then you should be OK with this.

If like me, you read and believed the documentation with the app that this is a periodically revised version so that you will be flying with the most updated charts then think again - it is not so!

I have had this app now for over 6 months - not a single chart has been updated. On contacting Pooleys I was told "we can assure you that you have the most recent charts" - which is nonsense.

How do I know this? - well simply because I also have a subscription to Pooleys printed version, and there have been numerous updates since it was released. None of these updates are reflected in this app - it is fixed as of initial release in 2011. Some of these changes in the charts are actually very important but are not seen if you only use the app.

I have synchronised the charts many times - no updates!

I have deleted and re-installed the app several times - no updates!

Just to be very clear - the app works, you can see Pooleys charts - it's just that they are the versions as if you had bought the fixed printed bound version at the end of last year ( which is a lot cheaper ).

Having been a strong supporter of Pooleys for many years I am sad to be moving away. There are better options available - and more honest in their descriptions of what they offer.

Pooleys you should be ashamed of yourselves - this is simply a series of pdf scans of your plates that you print in your bound version and offers no update service whatsoever.

There seems to be no interest or willingness to address this issue, or fix this serious inadequency on your part.

You should be truthful and honest with your customers. Your description of the app is not honest. Fraudulent? - possibly, hence the title.

Yours, very disappointed........

### 1/5 — Pooleys Iplates

*2012-08-31, version 1.8*

This is the worse App I have ever purchased!

### 1/5 — Failure to work at all!

*2012-07-31, version 1.8*

I bought the app in good faith at the beginning of the year. After working for half of the subscription period the app was updated, since when I have been totally unable to use it!
I have tried many times to rectify the problem, to no avail, even including a suggestion by Pooleys to use a new password, after which not only could I not access any plates but now I cannot even sign in.
I am now being ignored by Pooleys, despite having had only half of what I paid for, receiving no reply from their 'support'!
Beware!

### 1/5 — really annoying

*2012-07-29*

for a week or more this app had a faulty error message saying all the plates were outdated when they were not but would not sync up over a fast wifi connection. now i have a situation where it says i have goodwood plate downloaded but when i click on it, what i have is the instructions pdf for the app, annoying when i am flying in to goodwood tomorrow and needed to print out the plate. give me my money back, this is worse than nothing!

### 1/5 — Rubbish

*2012-06-29, version 1.8*

This is one of the most user unfriendly and badly written programmes I have ever used. As a PPL the programme works ok, but if you make one mistake you have to download all the plates again. Also its only a scan in of the paper plates. You get nothing else from the electronic version. After paying half the price for the Pooleys book I will not be paying this again next year!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Outdated and horribly designed, poor from Pooley’s

*2023-03-04, version 2.0.8*

As title says, poor from Pooley’s even thinking selling this rubbish is acceptable, horribly designed even from last update 4 years ago it would have been outdated.

### 1/5 — Cannot Use

*2023-01-21, version 2.0.8*

Whenever I click ‘register’ on the from page it goes to a white screen and no further, you can’t go back or anything, have to close the app.

### 1/5 — Can’t even register waste of money

*2022-10-01, version 2.0.8*

Glad I have the paper version as the app is useless, do not buy!
Fails at first hurdle, blank screen lock up on pressing register. Tried 2 devices same issue, even after a restart. Tarnishes the Pooley brand. Fix or discontinue sale of this shoddy product

### 1/5 — Locked up within seconds

*2022-07-26, version 2.0.8*

Pressed register and it locked up with a blank white screen. Unable to get it to work on a brand new iPhone

### 1/5 — Registrar Freeze

*2022-02-27, version 2.0.8*

Downloaded this app and followed instructions to register. Screen freezes with blank presentation and nothing. Just how am I supposed to get access to the iPlates?

### 1/5 — Pooleys iPlates

*2021-11-17, version 2.0.8*

Simply doesn’t work, don’t waste your money. Stick to paper or buy with SkyDemon.

### 1/5 — Can’t even register

*2020-06-07, version 2.0.8*

Enter my details, back comes a grey screen, that’s it. Glad I didn’t subscribe to the plates first ...

### 1/5 — Auto update totally useless!

*2020-02-11, version 2.0.8*

The auto update feature and even attempting to download any updates to the app is impossible as it just errors out after about 5 minutes trying.
Needs a lot of work, suggest start over. Will not be renewing.

### 1/5 — Not Georeferenced

*2018-04-18, version 2.0.7*

Despite what it says on just about every flyer forum these plates are not georeferenced. The minimal amount of Pre purchase information on Pooleys website is appalling. If you want the proper georeferenced versions you will have to purchase within another App such as SkyDemon.

The iPlates App itself is pitiful. The handling of search, favourites etc is poor. The only way to make use of the plates properly is to export the pdfs to a third party App then organise them manually.

Total waste of money.

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2015-05-24, version 2.0.1*

The recent update managed to clear all my downloaded plates. I discovered this in the cruise on the way to an airfiled with a noise abatement procedure. So if you have to carry a paper backup then what's the point? Also at least one airfield I have to refer to crashes in the new version of the app.

Probably worthwhile as a free add-on to a paper copy but it can't be taken seriously & I won't be renewing my subscription.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great App Pooleys

*2013-02-19, version 1.8.1*

Great App, saves carrying all that paper around. Better price than last year. The licence allows you to use it on two iPads so that has been useful now that I have an iPad mini ; )

### 5/5 — Great App, all pilots should have this… just in case!

*2012-11-08, version 1.8*

It's great not to have to carry my whole flight guide around with me and have all the plates and information on my iPad. Having the latest plates by sync'ing every so often is really helpful. I found that new airfields that I hadn't previously downloaded suddenly appeared - it would be helpful if Pooleys could advise when a new plate is issued.

### 5/5 — Lee

*2012-11-06, version 1.8*

This is a brilliant app. Well worth it. All the useful info usually found in the Pooleys binder, but on your iPad. Just press sync every now and again I make sure the info is most current. Simple.

Great customer service too after a small tech issue apparent after the update.

Well worth the money.

### 5/5 — Good effort Pooleys

*2012-11-04, version 1.8*

Once I had spent time getting my head around this app, it proved to be very useful. I had a glitch after the update but Pooleys sorted it for me pretty quickly after I got in touch. Well worth getting.

### 5/5 — Brilliant! Worth the Money!

*2012-10-23, version 1.8*

This is fantastic, all my much needed charts and guides on my iPad - in one small place.

I found them all very easy to use and the app is so easy navigate around.

The best bit of all, is knowing I will be flying with up to date charts and guides at just a click of a button.

Fantastic Work Pooleys!

### 4/5 — Saves Paper!

*2013-03-27, version 1.8.1*

Just a pity you do not get many updates. No aerodrome plates at all this year so far. Surprising as when I had the paper version the updates arrived every month. I'm a bit disappointed really. Have got to eat humble pie now as the aerodrome charts have just been updated. Gets an extra star.

### 4/5 — iPlates needs much more work!

*2012-01-30, version 1.3.1*

I bought this expensive app thinking it would be easier to carry around on my iPad rather than the carry the printed version.

Sadly this app is useless as it stands as because I cannot access the plates without an internet connection, even though the plates have been downloaded to the iPad.

Since posting this review I have been in contact with Sebastian Pooley.

The answer to the off line error is the tap the EG symbol on the first screen and then scroll down the list of stored plates. Do not use the search using "POOLEYS" unless online.

This will only work if the plates are downloaded to your iPad.

An update is coming that will have a favourites tab which should make the app easier to use.

### 4/5 — so far, so good

*2011-11-01, version 1.1*

Nice to have Pooleys Charts on my iPad (and certainly cheaper than the other alternative). iPlates Server is a little slow at the moment, but hopefully that will improve over time. From the first impressions I have given it a 4.

### 3/5 — Love2fly

*2017-07-31, version 2.0.5*

Yes, its a nice way to get your plates. Pooleys are the best at the printed version and in-valuable in the cockpit. But you should not have to pay for iPlates that are free on the AIS. I fully understand the need to finance the app, but you could be given this free with the flight guide.

Go the your local AIS service. You could download Airmate app or similar to get these plates for free.

### 3/5 — Getting there

*2012-01-01, version 1.3.1*

The current version of the app now gives rapid access to high quality screen versions of the Pooleys VFR plates, together with the other useful ancillary information from the printed flight guide. Curiously, some airfield plates are located in the general information indexes, but searching within the airfield list still finds them.
The main downside seems to be that the cost is higher than the printed version. On the other hand, updating the guide should be seamless.
As with the book, the guide does not cover all the airfields in its main printed rival and those who like to use smaller fields and farm strips may want to run a comparison before purchasing.
Still to come are the European IFR plates, which will be a welcome addition.
