Because I’m a temporary resident for a year I was also asked for my visa, passport and utility bills. I provided all the documents and blacked out my passport number for safety. Popcar wouldn’t finalise my registration unless I‘d send my passport without blacking out that detail. This is sensitive data and Popcar is already in possession of numerous ID documents of mine including information like place and date of birth, full name, address, number of my local and international drivers license. I think that should be enough personal details to rent a car. ### 1/5 — Do not trust Popcar *2024-03-30, version 105.69* Popcar is completely unreliable. From the app to the “support” to the actual cars, Popcar is useless. Do not trust Popcar with your transportation. So dodgy. ### 1/5 — Scam alert *2023-11-02, version 105.58* Do not download this app. I was scammed and money was taken from my bank account and still denied access to the app for no reason. When I contacted them via email for a refund they simply ignored me. ### 1/5 — Pretending to be a Toyota dealership? *2023-09-21, version 105.54* When one calls from a private number @ Stephanie and Tom from Popcar pretend to be a Toyota dealership. I recorded this phone call and sent a copy to Toyota Australia. They ask you to find a parking spot which is impossible in inner city, and you are liable for any possible parking fines. Disgusting policy when it is entirely not the fault of the driver if some irresponsible person has taken the car spot. Popcar should work out a proper plan with council to handle such scenarios. People have been fined for being unable to find a proper parking spot when returning the car. BE WARNED. ### 1/5 — Worst company ever *2022-12-16, version 105.30* Hire a van from this mob for moving houses. The first time around the member didnt return the car to the bay, so I wasted one day (already asked mates to help with the move). Second time around the van is there, car would NOT unlock via app. Have to call the support which is fine. Next morning same problem happened again, support is not online yet. Waste of time, didnt appreciate peoples time. ### 5/5 — Best carahare app *2022-12-14, version 105.30* I loved it and use a lot ### 1/5 — Car return policy *2022-10-26, version 105.25* In their policy, if the designated parking spot is taken by another car (illegally), you are responsible to find a car spot with no time restriction or you will have to cope the parking fines. Basically means you are making a gamble if the car is in inner city. It happened to us and we ended up spending 1+ hour just find a spot and take public transport back to get our car when we rented a van. Customer service is unsympathetic and rude - simply says it’s the policy we have accepted and deal with it. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Poor customer service *2026-07-07, version 304.1.0* By far the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. I was falsely issued a fine under my name, yet received no apology or compensation. My account was then suspended without any explanation, and instead of telling me the reason, they expected me to contact them to find out myself. Extremely unprofessional and treating long term customer like dog. ### 1/5 — New app is trash *2026-06-18, version 304.0.0* App is hot garbage. I can even see my area on the map, it refuses to scroll over a certain distance. What a disaster of an update ### 1/5 — App ‘upgrade’ isn’t an upgrade *2026-06-18, version 304.0.0* If you’re planning to sign up, I’d suggest also having a look at Flexicar and/or GoGet. Popcar have changed not only their app, but their terms as well. The minimum booking period is now 1hr (it used to be whatever time you wanted it for). You can only book on the quarter hour (eg 8.15, 8.30, 8.45 etc). It used to be any minute you wanted. Many of the cars are ‘under maintenance’ today (17 June 2026). Hopefully they sort them out soon so they can be booked. The dots showing available cars are tiny - not a big deal but you’d think they could at least be bigger than the green dots showing tram stops. I’m a long-tern user of Popcar - they were previously the best out there (by far). However, with these new minimum booking periods and time restrictions, it’s a waiting game to see if this ‘upgraded app’ is any more than an excuse for increased revenue. ### 1/5 — Don’t use this *2026-03-09, version 106.26* Deduct the money, but failed in id verification. You should go for verification first instead of money. ### 1/5 — Sign -up process very poor *2025-03-15, version 106.00* Was rejected when trying to sign up, with no clear reason. Help line suggested it was because my address was too far from a popcar location. This is a check that could easily be done automatically as part of the sign up process, instead of wasting days of my time. ### 1/5 — Terrible app *2025-01-05, version 105.93* Do not use this service!! Popcar are the worst car rental service I have used yet. They pull you in with cheap prices but you are hit with large fees when you are finished with the car. The customer service are rude and unwilling to help. If you are interstate don’t even bother with this app as it’s only for Canberra residents. Even if like me your staying in Canberra for 3 months. No step tells you that it's not possible because there's some kind of check pending. And then you stand in front of the car because you urgently need to go somewhere, click on book now and only then are you told that it won't work ### 1/5 — Joke of a business *2024-06-07, version 105.73* I had an account with pop car, had been using it as I needed, then was requested to resubmit my licence again which did. I have a valid licence with no issues and they have no determined that it’s not valid and I can’t use the service. No explanation or help to get me active again using the platform. 0 stars if I could for customer service. ### 1/5 — Customer Service shocking *2024-04-05, version 105.69* Signed up and did my licence validation stuff and got an email stating it needed more info and listing a number of scenarios in a stock cut and paste email that gave no real information on why it was not accepted emailed them back and my licence verification was reset and I did it again only to get another vague cut and paste email saying I was rejected and to refer to the tncs emailed back to ask for specifics and got back another cut and paste email.
