### 2/5 — When it works, it kinda works

*2021-11-04, version 1.0.28*

The app is okay, limited, when it works it kinda works. When it doesn’t work there is absolutely nothing you can do to adjust settings. Been needing to adjust for almost a day and the app keeps telling me the portal is offline.

### 3/5 — App needs more features

*2020-06-13, version 1.0.28*

Seems fine so far, I was hoping the app would have more tools.

### 1/5 — Not A Great Option

*2019-07-01, version 1.0.28*

On first set up it’s awesome and works super well. Although, Much like many other people have said, as soon as anything goes wrong there is little to no support in getting things fixed. The App is a joke and there is no support team.

The first year was awesome and then it started to require hard-resets (power off/power on)every morning to get a signal. I did a master reset and that seemed to fix things until a few months ago where the outages started again. I’ve checked with my service provider multiple times and they’ve confirmed the signal to the modem is perfect. And now today, it’s finally crapped out. I’m buying a TP-Link AC4000 as recommended by Wirecutter. I hope to never buy a product from the makers of “Portal” ever again, even by accident.

### 1/5 — Crashes on Startup

*2019-06-19, version 1.0.27*

Every. Time.

### 1/5 — Crashes everytime

*2019-06-18, version 1.0.27*

Everytime I open the app, it crashes

### 1/5 — Needs to update app

*2019-06-06, version 1.0.27*

App keeps crashing, needs to be updated

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2019-06-06, version 1.0.27*

Crashes Everytime you try to open.

### 1/5 — App doesn’t work

*2019-05-23, version 1.0.27*

It crashes before it even loads. Only way to access router is via the web.

### 1/5 — App not working

*2019-05-14, version 1.0.27*

App crash after splash screen. It's useless.

### 1/5 — Can’t open app

*2019-05-09, version 1.0.27*

The app crashes after the splash screen, so it’s completely useless. It does this on the latest update and did it in the previous one as well. It’s even horrible on the web GUI. Going to look for a different router. I need something I can actually change after the initial configuration.

### 1/5 — will not stop crashing

*2019-04-24, version 1.0.26*

app won’t stop crashing...

### 1/5 — Inconsistent

*2019-02-14, version 1.0.24*

Kickstarter backer here. You can’t rely on the device or the app. Have had to force reset and set up again many times since purchasing. Now it won’t let me turn off fast lanes (despite the app saying it is) so my older devices can’t use 5GHz. Avoid this thing or return it if you can, it’s been nothing but trouble.

### 1/5 — Wifi access

*2018-12-29, version 1.0.24*

Zero instructions on how to connect via wifi. Way too irritating to setup. The irony is it claims to be easy. The setup is anything but. Taking it back for a refund. Hey facebook...next time, have someone come off the street, hand them the instructions and have them set it up. See how “easy” it really is.

### 1/5 — Total Junk

*2018-12-06, version 1.0.24*

Do not buy it.

### 1/5 — Essentially Worthless

*2018-10-28, version 1.0.23*

I honestly think if I connected my trash cans together via an Ethernet it would work better than these. Since I’ve purchased the Portals I cannot get them to pair together. I look at the support info and follow the directions... nothing. Master reset it... nothing. Keeps saying “there is an admin already”. I am buying the Google Routers to cover my home. If you’re considering these Portal devices, save yourself the headache and don’t.

### 2/5 — This app is too simple.

*2018-08-21, version 1.0.23*

Pretty much the only time I need to open the app is when my internet is not working. That being said, I need more information from the device other than. “Something’s wrong. Portal is offline”. I’ve already figured that much out for myself.

### 3/5 — I am being generous too

*2018-07-25, version 1.0.23*

It was great when I bought it, at now I get random outages. The App says my connection is good...but the computer does have any signal. Only reason I can wire this on the phone my carrier’s signal
I have not heard any contact, maybe they go hit by a meteorite? The driver is not been updated the driver. When it works its awesome, when it doesn’t your better off attaching this to wild boar throwing it in the Fissure 8 lava flow

### 1/5 — App is useless!

*2018-07-23, version 1.0.23*

(And so is their website.) You can’t do any administration from the app. If you think they are only showing some of the features, think again. That non-interactive network diagram—that’s all the app does.

### 1/5 — Very terrible

*2018-06-07, version 1.0.23*

App reset the data and now won’t login when I am on my network.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Useless

*2023-09-20*

App won’t connect to the Portal router. I’d like to be able to enable fast lane after a recent reset, but there is no ability to do so from the web config page.
Very lame. Please fix this.

### 1/5 — Just a terrible experience

*2023-05-21*

The app is useless, the site is less helpful, the design of the devices is not bad but rather large. I should just be easy to set up and go. Nothing on worked. I have not been able to just get them to connect to anything. The web app is also… what’s the point this thing is the worst.

### 1/5 — Frustrating

*2021-02-23, version 1.0.28*

Tried to pair with my existing and functional portal router. Three different phones, all up to date, failed to pair. Impossible to setup mesh network without pairing. No support available.

### 1/5 — Useless app

*2021-02-15, version 1.0.28*

This app is terrible. I’m connected to the internet through Portal. But the app says “Something is wrong. Portal is offline”. I have the latest iOS installed on iPhone 12 Pro.

### 1/5 — Can’t find Portal router

*2021-01-30, version 1.0.28*

I set my phone right on top of the router trying to pair the app via Bluetooth and it STILL couldn’t find the darn router. Giving up after many many attempts.

### 1/5 — You can’t change anything

*2020-08-07, version 1.0.28*

I like the device but the app doesn’t allow meaningful changes to WiFi.

### 1/5 — Turned into trash

*2020-04-16, version 1.0.28*

The first couple of years were awesome. This product had the best reviews so after a ton of research I opted to buy this unreasonably expensive router over others. Now, I’m stuck resetting this stupid piece of trash all the time and using the regular network in my house because it’s impossible to get it to work now a days.

The app is even more trash than the product. It’s cute and all that this company prides itself on simplicity but when it comes to complicated issues getting the same 4 stupid steps to plug it in and download the app are a waste of my time and not helpful in the least.

This is trash.

### 1/5 — App stopped working

*2020-04-10, version 1.0.28*

The app can no longer find my routers, although I can use the web-based browser. I regret ever buying these portals

### 1/5 — Tech support absolutely non-existent

*2019-10-07, version 1.0.28*

The routers and app are easy to use to set up your network for the very first time, but once something goes wrong it’s just a horrible experience.

Update: I’ve knocked the rating down to one star. My router lost its connection FOUR DAYS AGO and my tech support tickets have all been 109% ignored. Customer service is nonexistent. No one has contacted me and there’s no way to get help.

### 1/5 — Not easy to fix issues and no support

*2019-07-16, version 1.0.28*

I’ve been using this router app for almost a year. Worked on day one for the setup and there after router goes blue light and did not connect to app. Support experience is horrible they’ll respond after few days and we don’t even get notifications on that. So if we miss a day to respond they’ll close it and you need to raise new ticket . I raised 5 tickets for same issue and none resolved.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great router and easy setup

*2018-05-06, version 1.0.23*

This router was easier to set up that one I thought. It definitely was worth the money. Now I can connect from far points of the house and my son has plenty of speed for his Xbox one, in fact, he commented on how fast the upload speed was.

### 5/5 — It's marvelous

*2017-05-28, version 1.0.19*

Portal was an easy set up from 5-10min from unboxing the product to finished installation. The app is user friendly too. Improved Wifi range immediately and boosted speed.

### 5/5 — Impressive

*2017-04-22, version 1.0.17*

Just setup Portal tonight after a quick and easy step by step startup process. App is a.nice touch. It's stable and provides all the information you need. I would recommend highly. No need for extender anymore. Those 9 antennas work great thru walls and interference. Not to mention no longer competing device channels with neighbors. Very very good speed. I was very inpressed. I went from 33mb down and 15 up. Now I'm at 178mb down and 23 up. Not bad for a poor location setting. But whole house works now. Great job!!!!

### 5/5 — Portal App

*2017-03-15, version 1.0.15*

Love the app and interface is easy to use, just contacted customer support via chat and submitted my question, pending response via e-mail. The Portal has worked great out of the box and not issues to report at all.

### 5/5 — Portal app

*2017-03-07, version 1.0.15*

The Portal app is very easy to use, and very basic, which I like. It reminds me of my Apple AirPort Extreme, and airport app but with much better performance.

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2016-11-03, version 1.0.6*

A fantastic app for a fantastic router! My internet is so much faster and I feel much better knowing that all the networks around me are no longer slowing down my internet speeds. My only suggestion is to make an iPad friendly app, not just an iPhone app- because I use my iPad Pro 12" for everything, and to be able to have a more user friendly app on my iPad would make this even more perfect. Thank you!

### 4/5 — Why would yo rate tis

*2019-08-12, version 1.0.28*

????????? Ok the router is pretty good (I’m hoping)

### 4/5 — Great Internet speed

*2017-07-26, version 1.0.19*

This is the first time I've used such a fast wifi. The app does need some work but the features you're using now are good however, there is lots of from for improvement. Allowing the ability to cut wifi service to students from the app. The option is available through the portal GUI but it would be more convenient not to have to go to my pc every time. Outside of that I like the app.

### 4/5 — Great user interface

*2017-01-27, version 1.0.14*

The portal app has a great user interface, and it's very easy to use. I had a problem with the connection to my cable modem, and it was easy to reconfigure the portal network in a minute or two, each time. I think more robust documentation of portal functions is needed within the app.
On the downside, problems with the internet connection seem to cause loss of the network setup pretty easily. Also, there are built-in Firewall functions, but there is no way to access or modify the settings, or monitor traffic. Adding some way to adjust that functionality is a must. While we're on the subject of traffic, it would be a big selling point if you could control the amount of data or time frame that certain devices can access the network (to provide parental control of children's access to wifi, but this might also be useful in some business settings for guest users).

### 4/5 — Bandwidth issues

*2016-12-06, version 1.0.8*

Was extremely happy with this router.
Don't understand why I am only getting 380mbps connection wireless when I am next to the router. I would expect to get closer to the 1000mbps speed we have. Have the new MacBook Pro 15in. From what I have read it's an AC2400. Majority of it going to the 5ghz channels
