### 2/5 — Crashes facebook

*2018-12-21*

When you upload to facebook it crashes Facebook at 17% of the rendering in the preview

**Developer response:** Make sure you save out as Facebook 3D as Facebook has specific requirements for posting 3D photos. If you're still having trouble, please contact us at support@brainfevermedia.com

### 3/5 — To Crash Or Not To Crash

*2018-11-26*

I love this app so much but I dream of a day when it isn’t a tossup if it’s going to crash after editing the blur mask. It would be such a perfect app if not for that frustration. Everything else about it is wonderful and I love the results when I can manage to get an edit done.

### 2/5 — To developer: There is a crash on App

*2018-09-09*

The app is installed on iPhone X but for some reason it doesn’t work to touch and open it, not even are able to delete and reinstall.

### 3/5 — Pretty okay

*2018-07-18*

The app does okay enough, and is decent at face detection. But it is not perfect, and it has a tendency to crash a lot.

### 2/5 — Not ready for prime time

*2018-06-09, version 2.6*

Got this on the promise it would bring the “portrait” effect to my photos. Selecting the foreground is not automatic, particularly accurate or easy to modify.

Argh!

### 3/5 — Meh.

*2018-04-15*

Editing the mask is very fussy, doesn’t always seem to want to go where your finger is pointing. Zooming and panning are hard so that doesn’t help. Also on my second use of the app it crashed when I clicked Done after painstaking manual edits on the mask with a very busy background, and this is on a 2-day-old new iPhone with all updates to iOS and apps. This wants to be a pretty cool app but the frustration level is too high.

### 3/5 — Crash

*2018-03-27*

Every time I open the app, it crashes. Please fix ASAP

### 4/5 — Timer mode?

*2018-02-05*

App works great but the functionality is still very bare bones.

Can you follow up the flash feature by adding a timer feature for self-portraits?

### 4/5 — Portrait cam

*2018-01-11, version 2.5*

Great APP does a great job keep up the great work.

### 4/5 — Not bad

*2018-01-09, version 2.4*

Works pretty good!

### 3/5 — Shouldn’t be 4 dollars...

*2017-12-29*

I really like this app when it works, which is not that frequent, since there are so many bugs like not being able to zoom in and out at times and constant crashing. Please fix these!

**Developer response:** Have you updated to the latest version 2.4? That fixes the bugs a few people have experienced. Thanks!

### 4/5 — Amazing! But...

*2017-12-27, version 2.3*

This is app is really amazing but not everything is layed out correctly on my iPhone SE. Other than that, this is great!

### 2/5 — Crashes Constantly

*2017-12-27*

Am not at all impressed with this app. Crashes constantly, and when it does work, it has limited functionality. App developers respond to most negative reviews with “we are looking into the problem” yet months later the same problems occur. Not what you’d expect on a paid app.

### 2/5 — Still Crash,

*2017-12-02, version 2.3*

After face detection, this app going out. Please Fix.

### 2/5 — Update 21.11.17

*2017-11-21, version 2.2*

Just noticed an app update that I don’t recall ever having bought or installed. Turns out this strange app is the formerly perfectly appropriately named ‘Depth Effects’, now renamed for the rather spurious reason of having added face and edge detection. Shouldn’t have bothered. With either.

Nevertheless, I immediately checked it out on my not now quite so new iPhone 7 (see below), took a selfie, used face detection, edited the edge detection mask, defocussed the background, attempted to further edit the mask and the app promptly crashed.

Rereading my previous update below, I note that crashing had been fixed. So that’s another star lost. To the developers (who never did get back to me), a word of advice: ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ plus: ‘and whatever you do, don’t change the name!’

Update 27.01.17

Having previously reported 'constant crashing' on an iPhone 5 (see below), I received an email from the developer promising to look into the issue (though no further communication), as well as a full refund from the App Store. The app remained on my phone, however uselessly and was copied across to my new phone when I recently upgraded to iPhone 7. The app works quite well on the new device, without crashing. It would not update however and had to be deleted and repurchased before allowing me to submit this updated review. Having done that and tested the app on several images, a few observations: there is still no mention of iPhone 5 (and other?) incompatibility in the App Store description; the app does not cope with unusually large images, e.g. imported from another camera and will not load them into the app; the masking tool is quite crude and could do with the addition of edge detection to help with fiddly and irregular edges. On the plus side, the bokeh effects are optically convincing and though the distinction between Flares and Glares is unclear, both sets offer attractive additional options. I also note that the price for the latest version has gone up by £1, an increase of a third of the original price, which seems a lot considering the remaining faults and bugs. So three stars only, I'm afraid.

11.01.17
iPhone 5 running iOS 10.2. App launches and allows image selection from Camera Roll but crashes as soon as any edit is attempted. Relaunching requires same image selection again but crashes again in exactly the same way. Have tried several images and several relaunches. No joy whatsoever. iOS is up to date and developer site makes no mention of iPhone incompatibility. So far, an utterly useless app and complete waste of money.

### 3/5 — Good App

*2017-11-13, version 2.2*

As of 11/13/17. Thanks for your reply, Developer. No worries. This sometimes happens with iOS update.

As of 11/10/2017, App crashes on iPad Air 2 with iOS 11.1.1 when trying to select Done. Please fix. Thanks!

Initial Review:

So far, I'm finding this app to be pretty good with the effects. I purchased the 8-App Bundle from BrainFever Media, and am glad I did, however, I think this app could have been blended with one or two of the others. However, perhaps there was a reason they kept it separate. So far, this is the least of my favorite BrainFever Media Apps. It's not bad, it's just...well, I guess it's somewhat similar in some ways to LensFlare and LensLight. Maybe as I use their Apps more my review will change over time. Also, as another reviewer mentioned here, their are delays in the apps I've been using from them. Some of them have frozen and even crashed a couple of times. However, if the output I see on my iPhone and iPad looks just as awesome on my 27 inch iMac, then these apps by BrainFever Media will be KEEPERS. The effects throughout the series that I've been using so far have been AMAZING... especially Alien Sky. Also, check out BrainFever Media's Mac apps. (No, I don't work for them, LOL). I'm hoping they make Alien Sky for the Mac. Thanks!

### 3/5 — Potential

*2017-11-06*

Has a lot of potential. I don’t see an option for Flash when taking photos, and I cannot move around the photo accurately when editing where the blur should and shouldn’t be.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. We're about to release an update that adds flash for the camera mode.

### 2/5 — Kind of lame

*2017-07-28*

This would be a great app if you could use it on all of your photos. At least for iOS, it will not allow you to choose images to edit from Photos that are on the cloud, which for most people is most of their archive, so it's really only good for photos taken very recently.

**Developer response:** You should be able to load photos from your photo stream that are in the cloud. We're looking into what might be causing issues with cloud photos.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — I want my $$$ back

*2019-04-24*

Please refund my money. I’ve had this app for 10 minutes and it’s crashed 5 times.

**Developer response:** Sorry for the issues you're experiencing. Email us at support@brainfevermedia.com and we can help figure out what's happening.

### 1/5 — Epic Fail

*2018-06-20, version 2.7*

I am a big fan of Brainfevermedia apps of which I use several. It is hard to believe that PortraitCam is part of the same stable. I wrote the developer who responded quickly but offered no helpful information. My follow up request for help and info has gone unanswered. Rather than a litany of what doesn’t work, suffice it to say that the masking, which is the heart of the app, is a mess. I get better results from the portrait mode of the native camera app on my iPhone 7 Plus and apps such as Focos, Slør and Tadaa SLR.

### 1/5 — A waste of £3:99!

*2018-05-06, version 2.6*

The app keeps crashing in the middle of a photo edit, or the erase function stops working and you have to start again! Frustrating and time consuming. I would not recommend this app at all.

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2018-03-31, version 2.5*

May as well by a free app that has blur effect as this app is hard to use and auto face detect doesn’t work very well. Also the app isn’t an auto magic camera just a silly add on!

### 1/5 — Works the same as all the free apps.

*2018-01-07, version 2.4*

It recognizes your face and assumes things in the background are also part of your face. The edges of the blur are sharp rather than gradually becoming blurry. I want my $3.99 back

### 1/5 — Does Not Work!!

*2018-01-06, version 2.4*

I purchased this app on 1/5/18 and have not been able to open the application at all. Very disappointed!! It crashes ever single time.

### 1/5 — terrible - freezes when opening photo library

*2017-12-25, version 2.3*

slow, freezing, non-native UI.. the list goes on and on and i haven’t even been able to use the portrait effects yet. boooo

### 1/5 — CONSTANT CRASHING

*2017-11-26, version 2.2*

I was recommended by some people to get this app expecting great things so I tried it and it was terrible. Not only was it not user friendly but it was very hard to work with. Not responding half the time and it really annoyed me for the fact that it costed 4$ for a scam.

### 1/5 — 🙁

*2017-08-02, version 1.4*

Unusable Crashes iPad 4

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2017-06-19, version 1.4*

The unresponsiveness of this app is a complete disgrace.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — No flow.

*2019-04-24*

No flow, non intuitive.

**Developer response:** We're sorry you're not happy with PortraitCam. Is there something specific that doesn't work for you? We'd love to hear any suggestions you have to make the app better. support@brainfevermedia.com

### 5/5 — Wonderful 👏👏👏

*2019-04-11*

You guys make the best apps. I will tell all my friends.

### 5/5 — Wow!

*2018-01-09*

In just the last few days I've watched a couple of iOS apps appear that are able, in ways that mystify me, to create perfect digital silhouettes AUTOMATICALLY!! To do this manually was, as older workers know, a painstaking process. Amazing!

### 5/5 — Lovely and unique blurs

*2017-05-28, version 1.4*

A creative way to work with blurs...

### 5/5 — Absolutely Stunning!

*2017-05-03*

Took all of 60 seconds to fall in love with this app. Amazingly simple to use but your photos come out looking like they took hours. You get blurs, flares, glares and a handful of filters that all work together and the control to adjust them gives you the freedom to blend them into any stule of photo you may shoot.

### 5/5 — Love how this can update your non iPhone 7

*2017-04-28*

It appears to me that the portrait mode on the iPhone 7 is based off software and not just the lenses. Having said that this app really gives you what the iPhone 7 does and gives you nice port mode type photos. Hats off to the developers on this great app. BrainFever apps are always top notch. Keep up the great work.

### 5/5 — Love it

*2017-04-17*

Awesome application. Would prefer that there's no Advertisement on the menu regarding your other application since I also have them already.

### 5/5 — Brilliant blur effect, easy to use app

*2017-03-30*

**Update: 👏👏 the developer has made this app much easier to use, helping me to get some amazing blur effects. This isn't the typical blur slapped onto so many pics!**

I think I've bought all of this deceloper's apps. And they've been consistently good, some are truly excellent. This one has potential, but it's by far the buggiest I've seen from them.

The blur effect here is unmatched in terms of quality. But defining the blur areas is just a mess. So many apps, like Snapseed, get this basic part right it seems like a no-brainer. Where are guide lines? Where is the scalability of the blur area? Why does the blur area shift so drastically once I change the aperture type? This can cause the blur area to become so disoriented that I have to start over, or freezing happens and I have to crash the app altogether.

On the other hand, the options under the filter menu are great. Very handy. I only wish the vignetting wasn't so amateurish. Adobe's Lightroom has great vignetting possibilities. Can the blur and vignetting be combined somehow?

Overall, I've used the app and got some great results. Once issues like those above are addressed, getting good results will be easier.

### 5/5 — DepthEffects

*2017-01-29, version 1.1*

A great app to complement all photo apps.
Gives great depth of field and some lense filters.

### 5/5 — Excellent, As Usual

*2017-01-07*

What sets Brainfever Media photo apps apart is their ease-of-use and clean layout. I have everyone of their photo apps and have not been disappointed. On the surface, this app includes much of what the others offer with the addition of the depth-of-field effect (with great controls). However, what I love about using ALL of their apps is I don't feel confused about which one to use for what situation, and they all perform and interact well. And another thing I appreciate is that all of their apps promote creativity and provide options that most other photo apps just don't offer. Want an alien spaceship or dinosaur? No problem! Flaming meteor of fire? Umm...of course!!! Is there a grass field in the way where you'd like to see a river? Yeah, why not. Just add a body of water! :D Anyway, I really appreciate the fact that they don't just pump out your average, run-of-the-mill photo app, but make them all unique and special - and of high-quality!
