### 4/5 — Great but could have more

*2023-09-04, version 1.2.1*

I love this app! I used it to make my dnd character and almost managed to make her exactly how I pictured. Only thing I wish was an option was if there was scars you could add, or maybe a bit more of an explanation about how to use the app. I was so confused at first but eventually figured it out.

### 4/5 — Love it so much, just missing a couple things

*2023-07-31, version 1.2.1*

This app is amazing and super helpful for helping me and my fellow players visualize each others’ characters. Wondering, however, if here might ever be an update adding things like freckles, glasses, birthmarks, scars, etc? Or maybe I missed it in the user interface somewhere?

### 5/5 — Great work, easy use, responsive development team

*2022-09-13, version 1.0*

I had meant to write a review for a while and wanted to write in full but I’m at uni and don’t have time for that so here’s a shorter one.

The app is easy to use and can produce a variety of highly customised images. As such it is great for roleplaying games. It is also useful for using as a base to work further art from. A friend of mine has made some excellent AI shaped images using this app as a core. I have used it for paintings and made some cool things with the portraits in Photoshop.
I backed the Kickstarter and am very glad to have done so. I will absolutely buy whatever expansions the developers create. I have been a part of the beta-testing process and have had a lot of fun with that also. The team of producers are charismatic and highly responsive.
Aight, that’s all for now. Enjoy.

### 5/5 — An excellent app for making game tokens!

*2022-09-04, version 1.0*

I got this because I wanted to make some character tokens for a game I am running, and wow, it has a lot of options! Different races, different classes, adjust the color on gear, different gear. And so easy to use. Just missing one thing! There are cat folk, bird folk and lizard folk. Dog folk? 🙂

### 5/5 — Glorious Artwork

*2022-08-30, version 1.0*

Have enjoyed using this app to create character portraits for my D&D games. Love how the general look is consistent and gives off the RPG hand-drawn feel, I’ve enjoyed customizing my own PC’s using it, it’s truly been a blast. Bravo!

### 5/5 — Fun, versatile, labor of love

*2022-08-30, version 1.0*

This is my default app for making portraits for RPG characters. The customization is very extensive, and the frames/background scenery offer a lot of options to display your PC in their best light. Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — Best tool out there. Second to none.

*2022-08-27, version 1.0*

I have searched for other similar programs for the past couple of years and the ones I have found, have all fallen WAY short to this product. I have been using PortraitWorks since its kickstarter and it has done nothing but get better and better. I tons of NPC/PC portraits for my D&D campaigns, other ppls campaigns, and since I bought the Publishing Rights Package, Ive been able to do “side hustle” for a little bit of extra cash. Overall though, its easy too use. The learning curve is minimal. Yes the core basic program is free. Yes you have the options to buy in-app purchases to expand your options to make even more better portraits and customization, but it is well worth it. You wont be sorry. If you want to use it for just personal use for your campaigns and players, I personally recommend to buy the full package. What is it?? Like 30 dollars or something? Just as much as a game? I have spent hundreds of hours on it always creating new and unique portraits. Having photoshop or related skills is just a plus for even more true customization. PERFECT for virtual table top games.

### 5/5 — Best in class

*2022-08-26, version 1.0*

By far the best tool for generating and creating RPG portraits I’ve ever seen. It’s become indispensable for my virtual tabletop campaigns, where I use it to provide tokens for everyone according to the specific character appearance they’re after. Also proving useful for some personal projects. I’m currently using portraits generated here to help me index at a glance characters in a story I’m writing.

### 5/5 — One of the best Kickstarters I’ve ever backed!

*2022-08-26, version 1.0*

As one of the original Kickstarter backers, I’ve created countless portraits from the first beta up to this release. It’s come a long way and been an invaluable aid to me as a DM. It’s perfect for creating NPC portraits. You can spend hours customizing an important NPC, or quickly spin up a random portrait on the fly. The portraits also work as great reference images for commissioning art.

### 5/5 — Simply Incredible

*2022-08-25, version 1.0*

Whether you need a character idea for your story, want to generate a random NPC portrait in seconds, or want to meticulously hand-craft your unique portrait, this App has it all! The development team is super active with the community and in constant communication. You just can’t do better than this!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Deleting

*2025-07-24, version 2.0.2*

Do they honestly think that anyone is going to subscribe to their app? Even if I wanted to I wouldn’t on principle because I don’t give money to people who screw over their patrons.

### 1/5 — -_-

*2025-07-21, version 2.0.2*

Used to be good. Tons of content simply remove.

### 1/5 — Update ruined 100s of saved characters

*2025-03-11, version 2.0*

I purchased this app for each of the players in my D&D group during the beta phase. After spending 1000s of hours creating hundreds of characters for that group and other projects, the update ruined over half of them. Many of the hairstyles are no longer available, and those saved characters with the deleted styles were randomly given new styles. Colors, clothing, hats, ears, etc were also changed.
I typically spent hours on each character refreshing the randomized options until the one I wanted appeared. This update ruined over half of them. No point spending time creating characters and ‘saving’ them if the developers just callously change them with each update.
This app is designed best for those who have little care what the character they want looks like, and just want to churn out a quick approximation of ‘a random fighter’ or ‘some old wizard’ in a few seconds.

Do not waste your time and money on this app if you care what your characters look like and want to create and save them ahead of time.

### 1/5 — So money grabbing

*2022-12-04, version 1.1*

Literally everything cool you have to buy!! I hate this idk why people love it. Maybe make more things not cost money???

### 2/5 — Want to Give it 5 Stars, but Update Knocks it Down

*2025-03-19, version 2.0*

I very well would’ve given this 5 stars a few weeks ago but just recently (I guess as a side effect of the new update?) all my saved characters had their hairstyles and color palettes completely randomized. And on top of that some hairstyles can no longer be found when I tried to change them back, like when I press the curly tab on hairstyles there’s only like 3 in there now. What’s even weirder is hairstyles I can’t re-add to certain characters still exist on others, meaning they’re not completely gone from the game. If the developers ever see this, I would like to know if this is just a bug/ what the reason for this was if it was intentional, and if the hairstyles will be reinstated anytime soon? I love your app and have used it for years but this has deterred me from using it as of late.

### 2/5 — Man so mad right now

*2025-03-16, version 2.0*

I don’t know what they did but my portrait of my current DnD character just got all messed up and the options I had are no where to be found. It’s a good app but why did they remove things???

### 3/5 — Most frustrating app I’ve ever used

*2025-01-30*

This could have been incredible. However know this is a RANDOM generator. Yes, you can tweak each selection, but your options to do that are also random. You are never shown all of the options. Trying to make similar characters, such as family members or those in exact uniforms, is very difficult since your initial choice of age, sex, and race of the character affect what options are then available. Trying to find the same features is insanely time consuming since nothing is labeled, and you are only shown a few options at a time. You have to keep hitting the refresh button until the feature you are looking for is shown. What makes this even more frustrating is that choosing one feature will cancel out a host of others, but you don’t know which until you’ve refreshed it a hundred times and the one you are looking for still hasn’t appeared.
As an example, each hairstyle comes with several variations, but only one of each is shown at a time. When you refresh the options, some will be the exact same, but others will be longer/shorter/fuller, have added braids/curls/etc, or have the option to have multiple colors. The choices don’t even pop up in the same order so it takes even longer to search for the one you want.
Great for people who just want a quick random assortment of villagers, but for someone trying to create specific characters, it is beyond frustrating.

That said, it is still the best app I’ve found for creating characters, and I have used it extensively.

Ways it could be better:
1. Label the options (even just a number would work)
2. Add a search function so you can find those labels
3. Once you choose an option, have each variation shown
4. Grey out the options not available with current configuration
5. Stop shuffling the order in which the options appear
6. Randomness should be an option, not the only option
7. Genuine smiles, not just a couple of smirks (almost all characters look angry or depressed)

### 3/5 — Doesn’t Remove Watermark

*2024-03-31, version 1.2.6*

There’s no way to contact the developer within the app so I came here. The design aspect is awesome. There are so many variations and tiny details and you have control over everything. I liked it enough to unlock the export feature for $4.99 and it DOESN’T WORK. It does let you export the image but the watermark is still plastered across it. When you opt to unlock the app it specifically says the watermarks will be removed.
UPDATE: It removes the watermark for any new character designs but won’t remove it from existing designs. There star review stands because that’s really annoying.

### 3/5 — Constantly restarting itself

*2023-07-19, version 1.2.1*

The app worked fine, but weirdly only after I purchased a bunch of the additional packs the app now can barely run. I try to switch any menu it restarts the app like 6 or 7 times if it is gonna stop. Starting to feel like I spent too much.

### 4/5 — Great!! Just needs glasses

*2025-06-16, version 2.0.2*

I would give this app 5 stars if glasses were an option for the character creation.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Worth It! Highly Customizable! Not AI!

*2026-02-05, version 2.1.2 FC2*

I NEVER write reviews on apps but had to for this one. I have been looking for non-ai solutions to creating portraits for my notable NPCs for my players because unfortunately my patience is nonexistent so learning to draw is out ha. But then I found this app, hand drawn, so many options and highly customizable. Get it and support real artists! Just a one time fee of $10 to get all features but can be used free too.

### 5/5 — Phenomenal App

*2025-11-03, version 2.1.1*

Been using PortraitWorks for my dnd characters for YEARS and I’m happy they still update the app relatively frequently! To this day, it’s probably my favorite thing I’ve backed on kickstarter

### 5/5 — This app has it all!

*2025-11-01, version 2.1.1*

I know I’m glazing but this app has so much customization options and I’ve loved making my players and villains icons

### 5/5 — GREAT

*2025-03-01, version 1.2.6*

No ads or payments mwah except watermark😅

### 5/5 — Original Backer Here

*2024-03-17, version 1.2.6*

Use this for every single character. Its amazing. I’ve actually got the rest of my group using it now too. AND my DM uses it for every single NPC. lol. Only question I have now it, we gonna get scars? Or face tattoos?

### 5/5 — Amazing but could be better

*2024-03-06, version 1.2.6*

Almost perfect only thing I think would help is being able to add injuries and scars

### 5/5 — Best App for character building! Wow!!

*2022-09-24, version 1.0*

I can’t say enough great things about thus app. It’s clearly designed by someone with a deep understanding of character building and a real passion for dnd! It’s been so great to help me visualize my character and the options feel almost limitless! 10 out of 10 would recommend!!

### 5/5 — The best character creation app I’ve ever used!

*2022-09-15, version 1.0*

As a dm I absolutely love this app. It truly feels infinite when it comes to the character's you can create. The amount of detail and variety is so refreshing to say the least. You can easily randomize characters as on the fly npcs you bring into your games, or go in depth down to every last detail for your more advanced creations. If you are looking for an app to create your character, or npcs for your d&d game then this app is the app for you!

### 5/5 — Thank you!

*2022-09-15, version 1.0*

I like using this to come up with ideas for my characters. They easily come to life with all the little details they have included. I’m not just writing back stories or filling out character sheets, I’m getting to meet the character I want to play. Very awesome app!

### 5/5 — Great character art at your fingertips

*2022-09-15*

I love to use this app to make portraits of my NPCs in my D&D campaign. I need a tabaxi that looks like a regal black cat Paladin, easy. I need an old looking gnome wizard for a magic university lecturer, done. Bring your campaigns to life with this amazing (and fun) app.
