### 3/5 — Landscape doesn’t work

*2025-07-18, version 118.1*

on an iPhone SE, landscape mode doesn’t activate correctly.

### 4/5 — Game is amazing. Graphics rendering is poor.

*2020-04-15, version 118.1*

Amazing game that really deserves an update in terms of how it renders on iOS. Most fonts and tiles are unusably bad in terms of how they are rendered. Even the default tiles look quite poor here. It’s sad because the gameplay is the best of any roguelike on iOS.

### 4/5 — Solid multi-platform dungeon crawler

*2020-02-15, version 118.1*

Great game, but some QoL improvements like higher resolution rendering and full screen display would be nice considering the $10 asking price that’s unique to this version. The scaling tends to look a little wonky, regardless of tile set or whether I’m playing in portrait or landscape.
That being said, most people will likely never even get to the point the free version locks out, so I can’t bash it too much.

### 4/5 — Great fun, although controls can get in the way

*2019-07-26, version 118.1*

The game is wonderful, but as a game designed for keyboard/button use, the touchscreen controls can be sub optimal. Not infrequently have I accidentally double tapped A, and cast magic missile or some other spell inadvertently at myself. It is to the gameplay’s credit that despite this, I keep coming back for more.

### 2/5 — PLEASE FIX BUGS

*2019-04-29, version 118.1*

I love this game, but the Zap function needs to be fixed! A button mechanics need to be reviewed. Thanks!

### 5/5 — Would like to see more frequent updates...

*2018-03-12, version 118*

Fantastic game, I've been playing for awhile and can tell you the 10$ is well deserved to Jeff, and a big THANK YOU.

Edit: Jan/2014- really hoping for an update, but the future is looking grim ;-;

EDIT: March/2018- FINALLY AN UPDATE. Have been waiting for this day for 4 years, god bless murica

### 5/5 — One of the best games I’ve ever played

*2018-03-05, version 118*

This game is great it’s the ROGE like dungeon crawler I’ve been looking for but there is an issue that the new update just released were it causes you to sometimes double click the a button his is very bad because it causes you to shoot hurdled with magic sometimes

### 4/5 — Update?

*2018-02-07, version 117*

I played this game a lot but can’t now. I love it any way you could update it?

### 5/5 — please update!!

*2018-01-06, version 117*

love this but i cant play it because it says its not compatible with ios 11!!! please update the app!

### 3/5 — Needs update

*2017-11-29, version 117*

I love this game but it no longer works with iOS 11. It needs to be updated

### 5/5 — FANTASTIC game! Please please please update it for iOS 11

*2017-11-09, version 117*

If you don’t play powder you need to. Simple to learn, simple to play, impossible to beat and twice as impossible to find all the cool little waster eggs the developer put in.

PLEASE RELEASE POWDER FOR iOS 11 SO I CAN CONTINUE TO PLAY IT

### 5/5 — fun

*2017-04-18, version 117*

version for android ever coming?

### 4/5 — Good game

*2016-03-19, version 117*

Clunky controls on iOS but great on PC

### 4/5 — Fun but tough

*2015-10-22, version 117*

Game is very hard but rewarding once you figure out which actions to prioritise. Please fix issue with the app closing and losing the game progress! Very frustrating when you've put a few hours in to be sent back to square one

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Portrait mode broken

*2023-05-11, version 118.1*

Please please, if you see this please fix this. Powder is my favorite roguelike and is quite difficult to play in landscape mode

### 1/5 — Jeff, please fix the screen rotation issue

*2022-12-22, version 118.1*

Playing the game in portrait mode on modern iOS versions results in a heavily warped screen.

I’ve been playing Powder since 2007 on various platforms, and it’s really disappointing seeing the game fall into disrepair like this. Especially when this port has half the game behind a paywall.

### 1/5 — Please fix controls!

*2018-07-21, version 118*

Author: the repeat delay and repeat rate are way too fast! Please reduce it or allow customization.

I press the virtual A button to select an item and the repeat happens before I can lift my finger away. So I often select zap and end up zapping myself by accident instead of selecting another square (and many other similar accidents such as running into enemies I don’t mean to attack). I can’t make it out of the tutorial because of this!

### 1/5 — Inoperable

*2016-12-05, version 117*

Fix this already, it hasn't been playable in months.

It's a good game, treat it like one!

### 1/5 — This Is A REAL REVIEW

*2016-03-09, version 117*

Ok this is a good idea but this is bad I give it a 1 star cause this doesn't make since don't get this is a REAL review

### 1/5 — Can't play

*2016-02-07, version 117*

The keyboard loads blank, can't get past the name enter screen

### 1/5 — Why?

*2015-05-09, version 117*

Why is the PC version free, the Mac version paid, and the iOS version really expensive? And why has the most expensive version not been updated since 2012?

Also, I would love to pay for this game ($10 though? Can I haggle for $5?), but I'm afraid that it will have a game-breaking bug (I already found 2) that will never be fixed.

### 1/5 — I tried giving this game a fair chance

*2012-11-12, version 117*

But it's just not up to par with far better roguelike games such as Nethack/Slash'EM or my personal favorite Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. The so called deity+class system is a real hassle and terribly unbalanced. I will stick to Nethack/Slash'Em, DCSS and for the iPhone 100 Rogues.

### 1/5 — Great game, developer fails at unlocking

*2012-05-17*

So Powder is a pretty cool adaptation of my staple gaming addiction, nethack. Sure, the hook of this game (other than the fact that I can play it on my iPad), the deity mechanic, makes it clunky and annoying at times, but other than that it's rather enjoyable. The tile sets are attractive, interface is so-so, and the weapons and monsters could use a little more diversity. All in all it's a playable and repayable game. However, the unbelievably ridiculous thing about this game, and the reason I refuse to give it anything other than 1 star is the fact that the developer can't even get the unlocking right. I have tried at least 10 times to pay the rather ludicrous upgrade price to this guy and i can't do it. I just doesn't work. I am to the point where I don't even want to try anymore. Seriously, it should be easier to pay you for your work than it is to level a necromancer to 20.

### 1/5 — Not free

*2011-12-28, version 116*

Pay after certain level

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — One of the best mobile rogue-likes

*2024-12-09, version 118.1*

This game is pretty similar to Caves of Qud, but it’s much simpler. Still just as fun to play.

### 5/5 — So small

*2021-04-28, version 118.1*

Fast download - very nice.

### 5/5 — Deserves to go viral

*2021-01-28, version 118.1*

This game truly deserves to go viral in its current state. So fun. So different. I’m happy I can actually play it at my desk at work offline. Love it’s feel so much.

### 5/5 — Still worth it

*2020-09-12, version 118.1*

Been playing this game for almost a decade and still pulls me back!!

### 5/5 — Best Rouge like RPG out there

*2020-01-05, version 118.1*

Used to play this on the school computers as a kid 10/10

### 5/5 — Great

*2019-12-28, version 118.1*

I was obsessed with this game when I was a kid! Now it doesn’t want to restore my purchase from many years ago. Maybe because it isn’t compatible with iOS 13? Anyway, I hope my boy Jeff makes this not an issue.

Also, I recently figured out how to become a lich, finally, so that was hype.

### 5/5 — (FIXED)Love this game, one control bug

*2019-09-29, version 118.1*

This is my favorite roguelike, period. Highly suggest this to anyone!!! One big problem though: when pressing A to cast spells, zap wands, or throw, the game does not recognize that I need to lift my finger and press A again. If you do not release the A button super fast, your first button press will register and you'll shoot yourself with whatever you were going to use! Please please fix. I'd buy the game twice if this is patched

EDIT: THANK YOU!! Ladies and gentlemen, he fixed it. I love you... switched my rating from one star to the five star I’ve always wanted to do. Adding the delay was smart man

### 5/5 — Ideal rougelike

*2019-02-01, version 118.1*

Powder is one of the few games where the tutorial is actually helpful. Once you learn how the game works, it contains endless replay value. Outstanding.

### 5/5 — Awesome!!

*2018-04-26, version 118*

This is a great game, I always end up coming back to it. Very, very deep gaming and customization. It’s like a one player D&D kit in your pocket. Thanks to the developers for such a great job on the app, and thank you for keeping it up to date. People need to play this game. 👍😁

### 5/5 — Good game, lost purchases

*2018-04-16, version 118*

Fantastic game, loads of fun trying out different builds with the random starting items every playthrough.

Unlocked the game, updates went by, changed phones, and was able to restore my purchase, fantastic.
