## What is PPL Prep?

Practise for the Canadian private pilot licence (aeroplane) written exam, PPAER, with 678 original questions and timed 100-question mock exams across Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology and General Knowledge. Free to try, offline, no account: 50 practice answers, one full mock exam and the whole Library, then Full Access, a one-time purchase, unlocks the rest. Scored against the real rule: 60% overall AND 60% in each area.

678 ORIGINAL QUESTIONS, 63 TOPICS
Every question was written from public sources: the Canadian Aviation Regulations, the aeronautical information manual, the study and reference guide for the licence, and standard aeronautical theory. Each one carries a full explanation and a source reference, so a wrong answer teaches you something instead of just costing a mark.

EXAM-FAITHFUL MOCK EXAMS
100 questions sampled to the exam's four-area blueprint, a 3-hour countdown, flagging, a question palette, and no feedback until you submit — exactly like exam day. Results are scored by area and reported the way the examiner reports them: pass, partial pass with the areas to rewrite named, or fail. Your first full mock exam is free; more mock exams need Full Access, as do the four supplementary papers (Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology, General Knowledge), each with its own question count and time limit.

A NAV LOG GENERATOR, NOT ONE STALE EXAMPLE
Every session plans a brand-new VFR cross-country between real Canadian aerodromes — three legs, winds aloft, variation, true airspeed, fuel flow and a compass deviation card — and asks the questions computed from that log: magnetic heading, groundspeed, time en route, ETA, minimum fuel, compass heading and endurance. Fresh numbers every time: you learn the method, not the answers.

LOADING SHEETS, METARS AND TAFS
A weight-and-balance trainer generates a loaded four-seat trainer and asks for take-off weight, centre of gravity, whether it is inside the envelope, the landing CG and the weight-shift fix. A weather trainer generates coherent METAR and TAF pairs and asks you to decode them and decide whether the flight is VFR, special VFR or neither.

WORKED CALCULATION DRILLS
Generated density altitude, TAS, time-speed-distance, fuel, time zone, 1-in-60, crosswind, stall-speed and glide problems, each with the full working.

SPACED REVIEW THAT DOESN'T FORGET
Every answer is tracked. Missed questions come back on a spaced schedule until they stick, and the dashboard estimates your readiness against the pass mark by area and by topic, so the next study session chooses itself.

MUST-KNOW NUMBERS LIBRARY
One card per topic with the memorization core: VFR minima, fuel reserves, cruising altitudes, transponder codes, medical validity, ELT rules, METAR and TAF groups, V-speeds — each with its reference. Always free to read.

FREE TO TRY, ONE PRICE FOR EVERYTHING
Try it free: 50 practice answers in any mode (topics, Smart Review, trainers, drills), one full 100-question PPAER mock exam, and the whole Library. Full Access is one in-app purchase that unlocks unlimited practice and mock exams, the four supplementary papers and every trainer. One-time, no subscription, for your iPhone, iPad and Mac. If you downloaded PPL Prep before this version, everything stays free for you.

BUILT FOR STUDY, NOT FOR DATA
For iPhone and iPad on iOS 26 or later, laid out for the iPad rather than a stretched phone screen, plus a Mac version. With a keyboard, A–D or 1–4 choose, Return confirms, and the arrow keys move through a mock exam. Light and dark appearance. Studying works offline, and your progress follows you between your devices through your own iCloud account. No account to create, no advertising, no analytics and no data collection: the developer never sees your progress.

Written by a Class 3 flight instructor. Independent study aid — not affiliated with or endorsed by any regulator, and not a substitute for the current regulations and publications, which always take precedence.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.0 — 2026-10-05

YOUR PROGRESS ON EVERY DEVICE
Answers, your review schedule and mock exam results now come together on every iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in to your iCloud account. Nothing to set up: the switch is in Library › Sync. It runs on your own iCloud, so there is still no account to create, and the developer cannot see your progress. Each device keeps its own copy, so studying offline works as before and catches up when you are back online. With sync on, "Reset all progress" clears every device.

FREE TO TRY, ONE PRICE FOR EVERYTHING
PPL Prep is now free to try, with 50 practice answers, one full 100-question PPAER mock exam and the whole Library. A single one-time purchase, Full Access, unlocks unlimited practice, mock exams, the four supplementary papers and every trainer, with no subscription, on iPhone, iPad and Mac. The free answers and the free mock are shared by your synced devices. Have an offer code? Library › Full Access › Redeem a code.
If you downloaded before this version, everything stays free for you.

SCORING THAT STAYS HONEST
A wrong answer on a topic you have not tried can no longer raise its estimate. Mock-exam questions you leave unanswered stay out of your study record. Pass and fail, the result text and the Home chip follow the exact score, never a rounded percentage, and a score below the pass mark never reads as the pass mark itself. The generated nav log, loading sheet and weather blocks in a mock paper can no longer be split up by another block.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-09-27

PICK, THEN CONFIRM
Tapping an answer now only selects it, so you can change your mind. Nothing is scored until you press Confirm answer; then the explanation opens.

RUNS ON iOS 26
PPL Prep now needs iOS 26 or later (it needed iOS 27), so more iPhones and iPads can use it. There is a Mac version too.

A KEYBOARD THAT KEEPS UP
On an iPad or Mac keyboard: A–D or 1–4 to choose, Return to confirm and Return again to move on, and the arrow keys move through a mock exam. Keys never reach the question behind an open nav log, loading sheet or weather report, and they keep working after you cancel a Submit.

DOCUMENTS THE SIZE OF THE PAGE
On iPad, the nav log, loading sheet and Weather Synopsis open as a full page, sized so the whole document fits. Exam review opens the same sheet.

EVERY QUESTION RE-CHECKED
Every question, citation and Library card was checked against the Canadian Aviation Regulations (current to 3 September 2026) and the TC AIM 2026-1, and every correction was independently challenged before it went in. 125 questions and 36 Library cards were corrected. Citations now point to the section that actually states the rule, Standard 421 is no longer cited as a regulation, explanations that stated a rule backwards (compass deviation, the radar-alerting triangles) are fixed, a few US figures were replaced with the Canadian ones, and an example registration that belonged to a real aircraft is gone.

CALCULATIONS YOU CAN TRUST
Every generated nav log, loading sheet, METAR/TAF set and drill is now checked by an automated test harness over millions of samples. Loading-sheet figures add up from the printed values, CG and ETA-revision answers are exact, no wrong option is ever also right, no answer can be picked out by its position, its length or a fixed offset, and the registrations on the sheets are no longer those of real Canadian aircraft.

Also: VoiceOver reads each option's letter and says which answer was yours, the Library no longer leaves a lone card on a row of its own, and an exam's time is never recorded past its limit.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-09-25

Corrections to the generated trainers:

METAR & TAF: when the dew point was below zero, one of the wrong options for the temperature–dew point spread worked out to the true spread, so the question had two right answers. It now has one, and the new wrong option shows the real slip — a missed M (minus) prefix.

Loading sheet: when the people and baggage alone put the aeroplane over its maximum take-off weight, the "most fuel" question gave a negative number of gallons as its answer. It now answers "none", and no wrong option ever repeats the right quantity.

Fairer options: in a few generated questions (TEMPO, the METAR wind, the fuel load, litres to kilograms), the correct answer could be spotted by its length alone. The options are now balanced so length gives nothing away.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-22

Rebalanced question bank: the answer options of 342 of the 678 questions were reworked so that the correct answer is no longer, on average, the longest option — a test-craft shortcut that let a candidate score without knowing the material. An independent check re-verified every fact against the current CARs and TC AIM.

Appendix questions: eleven weather questions now hand you a complete METAR/TAF synopsis and ask you to read it, the way the PPAER paper does. Appendices open full-height on iPad, and the exam review shows the document beside each question it belongs to.

Home now puts the topics you have actually attempted first in "Focus next", weakest first.

Now on the Mac App Store as well.

Fixed: the practice-session summary compared your score against a 70% line; PPAER's standard is 60% overall and per section, and every screen now says so.
