## What is PracticeBell?

The five bars in the Bach invention had been fighting back all week. This morning she opened PracticeBell, tapped the Invention No. 8 checkpoint, and played the passage once at ninety-two beats per minute. It came out ragged, so she graded the take Uneven, named Pulse as the cause, and wrote one line: the right hand rushed the turn. Two clean runs later the checkpoint advanced her four beats and spelled out what to rehearse next. She warmed up against the metronome, pushed the tempo ramp until her scales held, tuned one shaky arrival against the drone, then logged the session to the piece. A handful of honest records, and tomorrow knew where to begin.

PracticeBell is built around that loop: name a real problem, gather honest evidence, and let the counts decide when tempo is allowed to rise.

- Passage Bench turns a bar range into a checkpoint with a tempo floor, a target, an advance step, and a clean-run gate
- Grade every take as Clean, Uneven, or Breakdown, tag its musical cause, and read a deterministic next-session instruction
- Metronome with time signatures, subdivisions, accent patterns, tap tempo, and selectable click voices
- Tempo Ramp and Gap Trainer for gradual speed work and internal-time recovery
- Records live in a private local store; PracticeBell adds no advertising or analytics SDKs and asks for no sign-in, and the microphone feeds only the live tuner
- Chromatic tuner and sustained drone for intonation, with scale, interval, and tempo-term references
- Piece library holding composer, key, signature, BPM target, status, and per-piece history
- Plan Lab, routines, tempo programs, goals, streaks, and CSV or PDF export of your own sessions

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.2 — 2026-09-08

PracticeBell 2.2 rebuilds the store listing around Passage Bench and ships a populated first-run example.

- Every fresh install now opens on a named worked example: the "Bars 22-26" checkpoint on Invention No. 8, five pieces, a 60-day history, a routine, a tempo map, and goals.
- The example is written once into your real store and can be cleared from Settings, then replaced with your own passages and pieces.
- Passage Bench: set a bar range, intent, tempo floor, target, advance step, and clean-run gate, then grade each take Clean, Uneven, or Breakdown.
- A breakdown recovers one tempo step without dropping below the floor; the next-session instruction updates from your own evidence.
- Share a compact passage evidence log with a teacher or coach.

### 2.1 — 2026-06-30

PracticeBell 2.1 adds Plan Lab and an offline pro reference pack.

- Plan Lab builds a time-boxed practice plan from local pieces, recent sessions, BPM targets, goals, deadlines, and session moods.
- New session blocks cover arrival, warmup, isolated passage work, tempo ladder practice, and review.
- Watchlist cards call out overdue pieces, large tempo gaps, recent struggle sessions, and deadline pressure.
- Ten bundled high-resolution practice sheets support deliberate practice, tempo ladders, rhythm grids, key-circle warmups, session review, recital readiness, sight-reading, technique rotation, ensemble prep, and goals.
- Piece detail and Practice quick links now include direct plan-building entry points.
- Review notes and App Store materials now reflect the current app, including the tuner microphone permission.

### 2.0 — 2026-06-24

PracticeBell 2.0 — a pro upgrade that turns the metronome into a full practice studio, still 100% offline.

• Chromatic Tuner: live on-device pitch detection with a swinging cents needle, note name, and A4 calibration (the mic is never recorded).
• Drone / reference-pitch generator with optional perfect-fifth and octave.
• Tempo Programs: build a per-piece tempo map and let the metronome advance through the sections automatically.
• Gap Trainer: mute whole bars (cyclic or random) to test your inner pulse, with a live Play/Hold indicator.
• PDF practice-log export per piece, with your session history.

Everything runs on-device. No account, no network — your practice stays on your device.

### 1.3 — 2026-06-15

BPM Progress Chart — each piece now shows a line chart of your recorded BPM across every session, with your target BPM marked as a reference line. See at a glance whether you are gaining on a passage, how many sessions it took to get there, and how far you are from performance tempo. Your first and latest BPM are shown alongside the total gain.

Scales & Key Reference — all 15 major scales and 15 natural minor scales bundled offline with note names, key signatures (sharps/flats count), standard piano fingerings for both hands, and a practice tip for each. Plus 6 harmonic minor and 6 melodic minor scales for more advanced work. A circle of fifths diagram shows relative keys and accidental counts at a glance. Accessible from the More tab, from the quick-links row on the Practice tab, and directly from any piece that has a key set.

Scale shortcut from a piece — if your piece has a musical key assigned, a "Scale for this key" card appears in the piece detail view. Tap it to jump directly to that scale in the reference, highlighted and expanded, without searching.

### 1.2 — 2026-06-14

PracticeBell 1.2 adds a Tempo Ramp Trainer (auto-incrementing metronome), an Intervals Reference (13 chromatic intervals with just-intonation ratios and ear-training examples), a searchable Session History with mood filter, and CSV export of sessions and pieces. Fully offline — no account, no ads, no tracking.
