When you first launch the app, if you don’t pick a server within 5 seconds from your list then the entire app will lock up for a few seconds. You can’t interact with any of the UI until it unfreezes. I suspect a Panic sync is running in the background but not 100%. Any chance we can fix this please? ### 4/5 — Good, But Flawed *2023-04-11* I’ve been using this a great deal recently to work on remote servers, and it’s excellent, but it does have a few flaws. 1. Even when using monospaced fonts, it loses track of exactly where the cursor should be, and the cursor can end up offset anything from half a character to several characters from where it should be. 2. It can become confused as to just how large the terminal window is, resulting in having to blind-type because the cursor is *under* the on-screen keyboard. In both cases, tricks that’d fix a real terminal (typing ‘clear’ or ‘stty sane’) don’t fix the problem. Closing the session usually fixes the first problem, but trying to fix the second can result in the server menu locking up and the program crashing. Finally, not a problem, but I would *love* to be able to have some form of ‘scp’ built-in to transfer files from Files or Photos - maybe sandboxing prevents it, but even having an option to send a file to Prompt, then select within Prompt from files that had been sent to scp to the current host would be great. ### 4/5 — Full featured terminal for iPad with some shortcomings *2022-07-20, version 2.6.19* I really love Prompt (along with many other apps Panic makes). This app gets me closer to an iOS only work environment - with a few shortcomings: 1. I wish I could specify how many rows of history were preserved in the terminal - it looks like it only keeps ~90 rows or so, often I need to copy/paste hundreds/thousands of rows from terminal into spreadsheet 2. Keyboard navigation - using ALT + Arrow Key doesn’t behave the same way as the MacOS terminal. I couldn’t figure out any way to quickly navigate around the text input, causing frustratingly slow edits I love the feature to keep the connection alive in the background! If these suggested changes are made I would rate this app 6/5 ### 4/5 — FIXED in v. 2.6.18 (v. 2.6.17 breaks iPad Keyboard) *2022-03-04, version 2.6.18* Panic fixed the issue pretty quickly and shipped 2.6.18. Upping rating. (But I wish they would test with a keyboard.) ——————— Well, Panic has managed to break my iPad keyboard again! If you have an Apple keyboard for the iPad, beware! The control key doesn’t work. The arrow keys don’t work. I cannot hold down a key to repeat. ### 3/5 — Good but how to use option as META key *2022-01-18, version 2.6.16* I equipped my iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard Folio, and I prefer use emacs in terminal. When use emacs with prompt, I cannot find a key acting as a “M” key, which is just “META” key. The virtual keyboard key META in prompt works well, BUT when use smart keyboard with iPad, there is no key which works as a META. Is there another way to get a META key for Smart Keyboard? Thanks anyway… ### 4/5 — 4 stars for horrible magic keyboard support *2021-09-21, version 2.6.16* I have a 12.9 iPad Pro. While app works great with magic keyboard detached with on screen keyboard, once magic keyboard is connected the app falls apart. Not only a portion of the keyboard (single row) appear on the bottom of the screen, converting the prompt, it is impossible to disable on screen keyboard entirely when physical is connected - it should be more intelligent. ### 3/5 — Another dead project *2021-09-02, version 2.6.16* This was good when it first came out. Nothing has changed since. There hasn’t been an update in close to a year. Can you add SCP / File uploads? *2020-02-14, version 2.6.12* I love the app. Now I can log into my servers anywhere I go. It works perfectly together with OpenVPN (I couldn’t get Termius to do that). The only thing I miss is being able to upload files. Now can we just add SCP as an option? ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Broken on the iPad *2023-06-14* I use this app heavily for remote support after hours. Used to work great on the iPad with the Smart Keyboard. However, at some point recently it broke and now should you switch to another app while logged in to a remote server, scrolling breaks and can’t be fixed until you log out and open another session. You can no longer see the prompt. As someone that needs to work in multiple apps to do my job this cripples the app for me. I contacted Panic support and they said it was a known problem which they will fix in a new app, Prompt 3, which is in beta. They even invited me to the beta. Sounds good? It would, except for the fact that I paid money for Prompt 2 and their “fix” is for me to pay more money for a new app? I don’t mind paying for a premium app but if they’re not going to maintain it then why should I stick with them? Prompt 2 worked great for me. I don’t need new features. I need a working app. ### 1/5 — Slow performance, bad UI, broken sync *2022-05-31, version 2.6.19* So many issues. Sync shows conflict resolution pop up on every open even if nothing was changed. The UI is full of minor visual and interaction issues, and is generally ugly and doesn’t follow Apple’s HIG. Actual terminal performance is terrible, just rendering an htop screen takes a good portion of a second, compared to a few frames in Termius. Really lacks the polish I usually expect from Panic. Sync is nice when it works, but beyond that there’s nothing worth using this over Termius’s free tier for. The soft keyboard extras are not as feature-rich or customizable as Termius. I wanted to love this app but as-is there just isn’t a great SSH solution for iOS still. ### 1/5 — Decent app marred by proprietary sync feature; nagware *2021-08-15, version 2.6.16* An otherwise 4-star app marred by a proprietary syncing solution when iCloud sync would be sufficient, seamless, and far better usability. But how else is Panic going to get you to give them your email address? That sort of "you are the product" grab shouldn't be included in an app I paid for. ### 1/5 — Less and less privacy *2019-12-09, version 2.6.12* Prompt used to keep sessions open for several minutes in the background, and would push a notification before it had to close so that you could prevent a loss of connection. Now it requires location data to keep sessions open more than a couple seconds after switching apps. My location is none of my SSH client’s business. Combined with the historic reports that the app opens connections to third parties, I can no longer trust this app to manage my servers. How long until it starts profiting off of the usernames and ssh keys saved in settings? **Developer response:** Hello. iOS 13 drastically limits our available background time to 30 seconds. Sadly, this is out of our hands, which is why we introduced the Connection Keeper feature. When enabled, Connection Keeper keeps a log of all of the locations where you connected to servers in Prompt. As a side effect, it keeps your connections active in the background. If you disable Connection Keeper, Prompt will not ask for your location. Your location data is purely stored on device and is not used for anything else or sent anywhere for any reason. You can find more info on this in our reference library, available at library.panic.com. ### 1/5 — Unable to hold a connection open if you do any thing else on your phone. *2019-04-01, version 2.6.9* Multitasking is just not an option with this app. Makes it so frustrating to use that I’ve given up on the idea of ssh on my phone and have resorted to VNC and a terminal. Wasted my money on this app no two ways about it. 10 minute limit isn’t what I’m talking about. It’s the less than 4 seconds of switching to another app then coming back to a closed session. Just useless. ### 1/5 — Why is this app making random outbound connections? *2018-02-04, version 2.6.5* Very shady for a sensitive security app to be making unsolicited third party connections. It should only be reaching out to servers I explicitly connect to. Developer doesn’t seem to be privacy minded. Edit: You can say that you care about privacy but as long as your app is making connections that I did not initiate, it means very little. First, it should be opt-in, not opt-out, because by the time the user navigates to the option to opt out, it has already sent some information out to third parties. Second, even with the setting toggled to opt out, it’s still opening random connections, so this setting is insufficient anyway. One, when I multi-task on ipad to another app prompt disconnects me from the server when I return. I then have to log in again and again. Two, I use a keyboard and there’s this annoying bar at the bottom of the screen. But then I cannot type when I click on the keyboard icon at the top to remove it. I am unable to see the last line on the screen due to this bar. ### 2/5 — Average at Best *2021-09-21, version 2.6.16* It okay. It will get the job done in a pinch but for the price paid its not worth the cash. For iPhone i think it does a good job but it really falls short with the ipad os experience. There will be maybe 1 update a year and still an very unpleasant experience to try to use this app with Apples Magic Keyboard. Sure its fine with my fingers on something small but I have a Pro level device, and paying Pro level prices for this app and it’s nowhere near something id trust to take on vacation with my as my only computer in case something goes wrong at the office. It is polished yes. But I was extremely disappointed after a year with this app on the iPad Pro 12 inch ### 2/5 — OK but no iCloud sync *2020-11-14, version 2.6.16* It’s a sound app but lacks basic iCloud sync, a feature that Panic has never been able to get working in their newer apps - they used to have it. They had to create their own sync solution but, who wants to save key information about the private connections that you have to your servers, on their servers? ### 2/5 — No Option support for moving words *2019-02-02, version 2.6.9* I still don't know why Option (Alt) support for moving words isn't in the app. When going through a long line you can't use Option to move the prompt input faster through the line. It's baffling it's not supported when it's supported in almost every other app, and not just ssh clients but even when typing in reviews. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Issues with iPadOS 16.4 release. *2023-04-04* Prompt is having problems with screen size when you switch off and then back to prompt. That makes using vi difficult. Having said that, I got a quick reply when I wrote to the authors. Hopefully, it will be fixed soon. ### 5/5 — A real game-changer! *2023-02-19, version 2.6.19* Especially on an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard, I can effectively use my Linux server anywhere I go. No more getting up from the couch to troubleshoot Plex! Panic is one of the old school Apple indie developers of very high quality software and this app is no different. It lets you connect, do real work with an optimized design that gets out of your way. Excellent value - well worth the cost as the developer is quick to improve and squash bugs / annoyances when they crop up. Highly customizable themes for people that care how their terminal looks. The default is very usable. The 2.5 update is a great one - many new features for power users. Just today I found out you can create ssh key pairs so now I’ve got passwordless key logins to my various servers which is pretty cool.
