Seriously. Repeatedly calling it a bug or code regression after a while suggests simply Proton can’t manage creating quality code. If that’s the case, then it means the privacy and security promises Proton makes might not be so airtight. ### 3/5 — Overheating My Phone *2026-08-24, version 7.11.3* Look, I love the service, but the last update has brought back some behavior that just chews through my battery and overheats my phone. It was there earlier this year, then it went away, but now it’s back. I can be using apps that melt my phone, you guys. ### 3/5 — Unread was fine where it was *2026-08-22, version 7.11.3* I am unfortunately not a fan of this new UI update, and I instantly opted to keep my inbox as is. Even so, there are minor but annoying permanent changes that I don’t like. Offering these as granular/customizable options would’ve been much better. It’s a small thing, but please implement top/bottom options for the Unread button placement. Not everyone uses their phone the same way and, for me, the new placement achieves the opposite of its intended effect. ### 4/5 — Great mail, Two Small Improvements *2026-08-21, version 7.11.3* I’ve been a longtime Proton Mail user and overall I really like it. there are two small improvements I think would make the experience noticeably better. 1. Add a discreet mail icon The “Discreet app icon” feature is a great idea, but the current alternatives are Weather, Notes, and Calculator. It would be much more useful to have an actual discreet mail icon as an option, similar to the Apple Mail icon. I’d prefer to keep the app looking like a mail app rather than disguising it as a completely different type of app. Apple mail icon would be perfect disguise. 2. Make “Sync with system” the default on the web version When opening Proton Mail in a new/private browser tab for the first time, it defaults to Light mode even when the computer is already using Dark mode. You can manually switch it to “Auto-Sync with system,” but I think that should simply be the default behavior. This is especially noticeable when I log in through a private window at night while my computer is already in Dark mode. It’s a small detail, but having Proton auto follow the system appearance would make the experience feel much more seamless. These are both relatively small changes, but they would make an already excellent service noticeably better. ### 2/5 — Leave out the AI *2026-08-21, version 7.11.3* Don’t you hate when you open your email and have to click click click clear a bunch of dickover messages informing you that AI features have been enabled without consent? I do! I hate it! Leave that google nonsense at the curb or I’ll find a new email service to pay for. ### 4/5 — After a year and updates *2026-08-20* I was upset because the app use to send some data that was tracking your connection but not anymore. After a year on the basic plan it was a good investment. I have seen the changes to the app and it has not sent any data that exposes the connection. That is without a vpn so it may have but not recently. I have one email address left to create on my tier and decided to re-review it the app again. I’m having a better experience now and it is getting better. Love the pure email experience with no account sync even if it asks to link with my google account. If you don’t want to use or invest in the apple, google, and email sync then you should have this app. With games services linking more and more this app will help it stop. Just be aware you lose your account you lose the email but there are enough recovery options to avoid it. Thanks for removing the random telemetry data from the app so it can be used on my mac. HTML email is problematic. App store support to manage family downloads isn’t enabled on Proton apps. Used to be that the unread message count badge would fix itself after you refreshed the mailbox. No longer. Now the app badge is stuck with the wrong number of unread messages permanently. So Proton is not just ignoring bugs they are doubling down on them and making things worse. 20 Aug 2026 Why is a privacy forward app scouring my messages to needlessly categorize them??? Even better you've clobbered even more of the bottom row of the inbox list with a badge for the unread count. Who thought that was a good idea? Just show me my messages without covering them up with needless dreck. Before some genius decided that white space was more important than content the unread messages count lived out of the way. As a paying customer all I can do is beg Proton to stop updating the UI — you're making it worse with each update. Since fixing actual bugs is not a priority they could at least spend time testing their awful app on a smaller phone. It's barely usable on an iPhone SE, not because of some technical limitation just because of poor design choices. 15 Apr 2026: yep. App badge still broken. Want to see how many unread messages you have? Tough! You will get an approximation and you will like it! Did you think that the app badge would accurately reflect the number of unread messages? Tough. You will get a random number generator and you will be thankful. It's not like you pay for this service. Want privacy? Tough! We will load privacy violating icons because they're pretty and you can't turn them off because you will love them! ### 2/5 — Important Features not developed *2026-08-20, version 7.11.1* We need better and more accessible organizational features, sorting, pinning, filtering, labeling. ### 2/5 — Offline mode does not work *2026-08-20, version 7.11.1* The app does not download images in emails. I have plenty of phone space and the latest version… Spent 30 mins w their Lumo chatbot and got nowhere. In the end - no offline mode, you may lose access to you email content. Do not rely on it. ### 3/5 — Modern design, same old lag issues *2026-08-19, version 7.11.1* Recently tried it again and my previous review still stands. The app design is more responsive and nicer to use with better animations compared to the old app. I still have the same annoying server side issues though. For example I delete an incoming email via the long press on the notification. When I open the app later, that message is still there until I manually refresh the inbox. Same with read emails showing as unread after I’ve definitely opened them. Please focus on these bugs or delays between client side input and server responses. I think the most frustrating issue is the delay or lack of notification updates. I often have a badge of no or one message, but when I open the app, 5 seconds later it loads 3 more emails that have been on the server hours ago. ### 3/5 — Perhaps not so secure? *2026-08-19* One hopes that the privacy claims this company makes are substantiated however having personal details linked to one account (mail for example) and a VPN that logs user activity aren’t necessarily synonymous with complete privacy. (VPN logging is enabled by default and can be switched off). I also emailed customer service recently to let them know that an account (access to all linked Proton services) remains logged in on a web browser for up to at least a month at a time. Which obviously isn’t secure as anyone with access to your browser will be able to go and access all of your ‘secure’ data. They emailed back and said the account does automatically log out after a set period of time. Which is obviously more than a month (in my experience). So just keep yourself on your toes. Even with a privacy-focused company. **Developer response:** Thanks for sharing your concerns. For security, you can review and manage your active sessions from your Proton account settings and sign out of sessions you don't recognize or no longer need. We'd also like to look into the session behavior you experienced. If you've already contacted support, please share your ticket number so we can investigate further. ### 4/5 — Glad it exists *2026-08-18, version 7.11.1* It's nice to have the option of a secure email provider that is already established enough so that its continued existence can be relied on. I know I am a freerider, but... Anyway, the one caveat specifically for this mobile app and the reason for 4 stars instead of five is that, if someone's motto is "privacy by default", then the loading of external images should be off BY DEFAULT too. And this was not the case, as I found out recently when I got an obvious phishing email, reported it as junk, the phisher followed up with another email that, this time around, landed in junk all by itself (as it should, the system learned things fast), but when I opened it (to silently gloat at them for wasting their time, I guess), all the images in the email did load and it was only then that I went into settings and saw that loading of external images was on. Some of us are in a situation where we would rather not reveal even our approximate location to people who might be phishing for stuff. Otherwise, very good UX. I do not like this latest upgrade to make it look like Gmail. At some point, Proton will become unusable. Any email or managed email address can be used to log into the master account for all other emails. Until Switzerland agrees to bend over on their privacy laws, Proton is the cats pajamas for all of your needs. **update: forgot to mention that the ability to change the app icon to something more inconspicuous is a great feature. But the name should either change with it to match the photo, just be changed to “Proton” (or something), or allow users to create a custom name. Weather or not complete privacy claims by proton are true or simply marketing, I love using all the apps daily for my business both in the hopes that they truly are private, and that better options to the other monopoly providers exist and are getting a run.
