Depending on the settings on the camera connection can be unreliable. The set up is also very specific and the unit has to be disconnected then reconnected to recognize the camera. The initial setup didn’t work and the Bluetooth connection had to be reset and deleted from the phone. ### 3/5 — More or less works, but very rough around the edges *2018-05-02, version 1.10* It took some time to get my Pulse working, and it needs to be activated in very particular way, namely: Turn on camera (Canon 6DMk2) Turn on Pulse Connect Pulse via USB Open iOS app Otherwise it won’t work at all. HDR doesn’t work (presents an error message) and long exposure doesn’t either (takes a shot at a shutter speed besides what I specified). Bluetooth preview image is hit or miss too. I also verified that I’m at the latest firmware :-/ I got this for time lapses, which do work though. ### 3/5 — First impression *2018-02-21, version 1.9* Would like to see image preview with current version and also histogram and Apple Watch support. ### 4/5 — It's okay *2017-03-04, version 1.4* For 105$ it's pretty cool, only thing I do wish the Pulse was able to do is give live view, that's a big thing for me since I'm mainly shooting videos for myself and have a 7D II so I don't have a flip screen on my DSLR. ### 4/5 — Good start... *2017-01-20, version 1.3.0* Ordered from Amazon and didn't read description close enough, the version that Amazon carries doesn't have cable for Canon EOS 5Ds. After a week delay and having to buy special cable all is now working. Amazon page should have option to pick camera (cord) flavor. Basic functionality is there but a little awkward to use. Too many clicks to get to things in app. Worst is going back and forth between screen with shutter and thumbnail and screen to set camera settings. These should be on same screen. Lots of screen real estate so no reason to have separate screens. Also one key bit of info is missing : what were the iso, f, and t of the pic just taken? If camera was on any auto modes such as A, Tv or AV or P modes this is important if I want to switch to M. Should have a little box next to thumbnail showing this. Now I have to go and get this from camera, which is awkward since pulse is most useful in locations where accessing camera is not easy. I have longer wish list of app improvements but this is #1, rest are mostly app navigation issues. Hopefully lots of pulses will get sold and app will improve in future releases. ### 2/5 — Too many issues with canon t2i *2016-11-27, version 1.2.0* I have used the pulse for a week now. Except for the issues that are already mentioned on their website, regarding the disconnection between the app and the pulse or between the pulse and the camera, which happens a lot, I have had more serious problems. Sometimes it puts my camera into a busy mode that won't go away till I disconnect the pulse. Other times my camera shows an error message in the viewfinder and nothing on the monitor, and won't function at all till I disconnect the device. This is too much for me and I am using my old intervalometer again. I think the device is released before enough tests on different cameras. ### 3/5 — One problem and one feature request *2016-11-21, version 1.2.0* 1. Problem is that with the most recent firmware I can't seem to get the device connected for the thumbnails. Otherwise the device works as expected. Working with a 5d mk II latest firmware 2. When the thumbnails were working, I noticed I can't get the whole picture on my phone. This is REALLY important to check the sharpness of the pic! Please please please add that. ### 1/5 — Garbage *2016-11-20, version 1.2.0* Finally i got pulse after 1 year delay. I went through instructions to connect my nikon d810. No camera connected, i upgraded to latest firmware. Still not working. Plus usb cable port doesnt look like the same nikon d810 has. Only half part port fits. This company is scam ### 1/5 — Haven't Gotten it to work yet *2016-11-14, version 1.2.0* Waited months to get my pulse and after it finally arrived after the Post Office lost the first one. I went through the process of downloading the app, that worked well and seems to be okay. I got the pulse to pair with my iPhone 6+ but in the app it showed no camera attached. I sent Alpine Support an email about the issue and they got back to me quickly, told me there was a new version of firmware they wanted me to install. The firmware update appeared to install properly but after the install I reset everything in my iphone deleted the bluetooth pair from the previous release and then tried to pair using the new firmware(v1.1.8). The only thing the Pulse will do now is recharge the battery using USB. If I go ito the 'about' option on the main menu I can see the app at v1.2.2.fe4101e, the formware does not appear anymore. I can not get the Pulse/iPhone to do anything now. I guess the firmware update bricked my Pulse. I submitted a bug report 4-5 days agao and amstill waiting to hear back. I'm not a very happy camper right now and wished I had waited to purchase my Pulse. I'm sure they will get it working eventually but all of the the waiting I've done really upsets me. ### 4/5 — Don't update Firmware *2016-11-09, version 1.2.0* Firmware update makes it useless with my iPhone 6s Plus. Tried every suggestion form Alpine Labs but it simply will not stay connected via Bluetooth. Extremely frustrating since I just received the Pulse after months of waiting. UPDATE Nov. 8, 2106: Update to the firmware fixed everything. Thank you! ### 2/5 — work in progress *2016-11-08, version 1.2.0* Worked/stayed connected okay initially, completely useless and frustrating after first update (I only updated in hopes of turning off the LED), after second update can connect but intermittent disconnects make experience less-than-enjoyable. Please also allow the disabling of the vibration when tripping shutter. And, if technically possible please allow for retainment of playback on camera's LCD (Nikon) while Pulse is plugged in. Lots of possibilities and potential but current user experience is too problematic to for me to even carry in my bag and count on during shoot. Hopefully this will improve as it is a slick device that I would like to use. ### 2/5 — Hugely disappointed *2016-11-07, version 1.2.0* Waited nearly a year for it, how can you have creative control if you can't see what you are taking a pic of, or control focussing. I expected live view, what's the point of 100 foot range without focus point control, like on Canon Connect. Turns the camera into hit and miss point and shoot unless you are standing over it, then you don't really need remote, it's great for time lapse though, if that's what you want, I didn't. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Meh *2025-03-17, version 1.15.1* Endless bugs. Of course the tech set it up for ANDROID after being told is was to be used on iPhone. Completely incompetent company. Still will not work on either of our two iPhones and Alpine is silent. ### 1/5 — First time using *2021-08-14, version 1.13.4* I bought this a few years ago...a lot happened, I moved a few times, had stuff in storage...long story short, I just got my pulse out for the first time after a crazy few years hoping to take some long exposure shots of the perseid meteor showers tonight. Just downloaded the app, and went through all the steps to connect it with no luck. The app can’t find the device. Really bummed. ### 1/5 — Very Poor *2020-07-23, version 1.12.0* I have just tried this for this first time. The Bluetooth keeps cutting out. It thinks the camera is in the wrong mode. The HDR option doesn’t work, I could go on. I tried to submit a big report, even that failed. Shocking how this was ever released with so many bugs. Kickstarter project and waste of my money 😡 ### 1/5 — Absolutely terrible *2019-06-01, version 1.10* According to the last update, they fixed an issue that would previously prevent the pulse from showing up in the devices page. That is a lie. No matter how many times I’ve turned on my Pulse and checked to see whether or not it was connected in my phones Bluetooth settings (it’s always connected, which means the Pulse Bluetooth works, as well as my phones) it never shows up in the devices list, which means I can’t even use it. It’s worthless. ### 1/5 — Rank Garbage *2018-08-25* A very dodgy product that works in whimsical ways. This company should be scrutinized for suspect business practices. The Pulse is a worthless tool that works almost never. Still can’t successfully make the Bluetooth work in 2018. Stay away from this company as you’ll be very disappointed. **Developer response:** Hi Neal. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I'm sorry to hear that it hasn't been a great experience so far. Pulse had some connection issues early on, but we haven't seen any known connection problems in over a year. If you'd be willing to submit a bug report through the app or send us an email we'd love to work through this and get your Pulse working properly. It's possible that you have a defective unit. The Pulse app however is very poor. The GUI needs bringinging up to date, Bluetooth keeps droppimg out. Not good enough app for pro work reliability. Anyone want to buy mine, going cheap. Will update the review if the app or product has any software / firmware fixes. ### 1/5 — Not happy *2016-11-21, version 1.2.0* This product was put out too soon as Alpine really hasn't made sure it would work with all cameras. I have a Nikon D800E and through all of their solutions inclduing the firmaware and app updates and connecting and reconnecting the camera, it has never been able to find the camera. They respond very slowly to emails and ask you to send bug reports but still no respinses to this. Excellent accessory for astrophotography *2022-05-17, version 1.13.7* I own a Nikon D3400 DSLR. As some may know, the only intervalometer available is an infrared point and click one. Not very useful for astrophotography. After looking everywhere online for another option I finally found the solution. The Pulse. Despite having some issues early on, it seems that Alpine Labs has come through and made a good product. I can now take astrophotography photos with multiple long exposure shots without clicking the shutter on the camera. Bluetooth connectivity is perfect, I have not had any disconnects yet. The only issue I’ve seen is occasional clipping with the onscreen text and numbers. Timelapse’s are super easy to set up and they even have preset ones you can try. I was afraid to try this out based on the reviews but I’m so glad I did! ### 5/5 — PLEASE ADD APPLE WATCH SUPPORT *2018-02-16, version 1.9* Apple Watch support would be incredible. Could just strap the Apple Watch to my Ronin or use it while also filming with another camera. I film concerts and have cameras sitting on stage while I am moving around and the ability to start video while far away at the click of a button from my watch would be incredible! Very interested in this tool, but won't buy it unless it supports the Apple Watch. ### 5/5 — Have it for my Nikon *2017-08-06, version 1.8* Works very well with Nikon D600. ### 5/5 — You have to have one if your a serious timelapser *2017-01-18, version 1.3.0* I can't believe I'm the first to write a review ,but this is a major investment in time ,especially if your of an "age " that requires glasses! This unit gives you the ultimate control in manual settings of most nikon/ Canon DSLRs. Saves you having to squint at the screen and fiddle with cold hands ,and into the bargain saves precious battery life on your camera for shots rather than wasting it on previews . I was very impressed at the level of professionalism of its inventors ,which is also reflected in their other product "Radian2" a timelapse panning device .
