### 2/5 — Warning! Battery Killer!

*2023-01-11, version 3.2.2*

Even with “Background App Refresh” turned off (and virtually never launching it), this app consistently accounts for 15-20% of my daily battery usage.

Deleting until it’s fixed.

### 4/5 — App keeps crashing but good app

*2022-03-09, version 3.2.2*

I recently installed this app today and my first impressions were not that really good because it would crash sometimes. But on the other hand, my other impressions were the simulation of the QuakeAlert and the maps and quake occurrences by list. So if you can fix the crashes on the app, it would be splendid. If your looking for a QuakeAlert app, this is recommended, but I will give you a advice, it will crash sometimes. I’m giving it a 4.5/5. And it will be useful since I’m a Junior High Student

### 2/5 — Failed on early warning.

*2021-09-19, version 3.2.2*

Had a 4.3 earthquake 8 miles away and never received an early or even a late warning. Another app I have was 3 minutes after quake ended, but I did get it. I checked this app as soon as the quake ended and it was listed as a 4.7, but never any type of warning. When I think about it, I’ve never received any warning from them on any quakes and all notifications are on. It still has a ways to go.

### 2/5 — Activate again??

*2021-05-06, version 3.2.2*

Yesterday I downloaded the quake alert app and activated it. Today I got an email from them thanking me for downloading and activating, plus some info about the app. I then went to the app and it says I must activate the app for it to work. How did I get unactivated?

### 2/5 — Constantly active on background (iphone 11)

*2021-01-16, version 3.2.2*

Is there no way for this app to exist without being constantly active? My battery page shows that it’s using battery at all times with screen off. I worry this is impacting my battery life a lot

### 4/5 — Just had an earthquake

*2020-09-19, version 3.2.2*

It did alert me “earthquake in your area will start in 5 seconds” but by the time I got the alert it was already half over and I was aware there was a quake already. Still cool though. Hopefully next time I’ll really get it in advance.

### 4/5 — It worked. Kinda.

*2020-09-19, version 3.2.2*

App did alert me of a quake we had about 30 minutes ago but the alert was sent as the shaking was happening. I’m only about 10 miles from the epicenter (close) so I’m thinking that was the reason.

The app did work though!

### 2/5 — Failed!

*2020-09-19, version 3.2.2*

Got my first alert from this app tonight. Only issue was the alert came in five seconds after the initial hit. Notifications are going to have to push out much quicker for this to be effective. Keep at the mission!

### 3/5 — Warning Alert Arrived after Quake Hit

*2020-08-03, version 3.2.2*

Love the idea and science behind this app; however, looks like some issues need to be worked out. During the recent Pacomia quake, the alert came about 2 seconds after the shaking stopped. We were about 14 miles from epicenter so curious if distance, speed of calculations, server capacity, and/or some other telecommunications issues played a hand. Definitely needs further study; otherwise, use of app for its intended purpose is a failure.

### 4/5 — "Always" location seems to drain battery

*2020-07-30, version 3.2.2*

I went into settings and changed it to "while using", and it's a lot better.

### 4/5 — Pretty good app

*2020-07-30, version 3.2.2*

I received the alert at the same time as I felt the shaking of a 4.2 earthquake 17 miles away. Would have been great to get the alert before I felt the shaking but this app is way better than the city of Los Angeles shake alert app that didn’t provide an alert.

### 2/5 — Killing the battery

*2020-07-09, version 3.2.2*

After a recent update, this app shows in the Battery settings screen as running in the background for a full hour *every* hour. The phone is always warm to the touch, and battery life has suffered greatly. Rebooting the phone seems to stop it, but only for a while.

### 4/5 — Worked for Lone Pine Quake

*2020-06-25, version 3.2.2*

Got a warning about 7 sec before I felt the quake, and I was 85 mi from epicenter. This app works great and got it on my Apple Watch. USGS warning came 5 min after the quake lol.

### 2/5 — Great idea but doesnt work

*2020-06-04, version 3.2.1*

Felt one 3.9 and one 5.5 magnitude earthquake without any notification from the app. Location services on and set to notify with lowest MMI so I dont know why it is bot working. Also running the location services contribute to battery draining. If it will reliably notify me, it would be worth it but so far, nothing.

### 4/5 — Great idea but...

*2020-05-10, version 3.1*

It worked great. The alarm for the quake went off...in the middle of the quake. I was able to get all pertinent info on the quake...too bad it doesn’t go off a few seconds beforehand...a few days would be better, but I know I know...it’s good, and I hope they keep on perfecting it. It is good to know what just happened. I was surprised to be near the epicenter.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the update. There is a lot happening in the back-end to deliver these alerts and we're working hard to drive down alert time. Currently, the USGS has to detect the earthquake, process the data, and then send it to us and we push the alert out through Apple. We are trying to optimize each step but if you're close to the epicenter, we don't have as much room for delay.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2023-01-24, version 3.2.2*

I’ve had this app for sometime. I have it set to detect all local earthquakes and it has never alerted me even after a 3.8 that shook my house pretty good. It also drains my battery like crazy even after changing settings. I just deleted it!

### 1/5 — Still a battery killer

*2022-11-24, version 3.2.2*

Two years ago someone wrote a review that the app was draining their battery. It still is — 37% off my battery was being used by it. MyShake offers the same warnings without battery issues. I’m using it exclusively now.

### 1/5 — Didn't notify me of the 5.1 that happened a few miles away

*2022-10-25, version 3.2.2*

I have all location and notification permissions enabled, yet this failed to let me know about the 5.1 San Jose earthquake that just happened...even after the fact. It's in the app when I check but I've received zero notifications for the last couple years even though I have the highest sensitivity level on. It unfortunately is useless and just drains my battery from constant location provisions. I'll have to delete this.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2022-05-26, version 3.2.2*

Last night there was a 4.3 magnitude earthquake here and this app did not warn me nor is it showing the earthquake in the list of earthquakes. My other app, MyShake did both. Maybe this app only works above a certain magnitude? Probably won’t be keeping this app.

### 1/5 — No alerts

*2022-02-27, version 3.2.2*

This app must not work in Ventura County, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. We’ve had two earthquakes and a few aftershocks in the last two weeks located only 5miles away, including a 4.1 yesterday that never once alerted. Not once have I gotten an alert in over a year of having this app. I have my alerts set to the lowest setting, too, so there should at least be something. Had high hopes, but it’s been useless.

### 1/5 — Alerts don’t work

*2020-09-22, version 3.2.2*

I had this app set to send me alerts whenever there is going to be a quake more than 3.0 . We had a 4.6 the other day and no alerts came up. My other quake app gave me a 2 second heads up. I don’t know what the issue is but this app needs to get worked out.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2020-09-19, version 3.2.2*

We just had an earthquake here prelim was 4.8 and the app never notified me. What is this app for then??? I have it set to notify me of quakes 3+. This quake was centered 17 miles away which is close. This app is useless. Doesn’t do what it say it will. I’m going to find something better that ACTUALLY WORKS!! Don’t waste time downloading it. This is the third time we’ve had an earthquake and it didn’t work.

### 1/5 — App seems abandoned

*2020-05-28, version 3.2.1*

I tried to set up to get alerts which I originally did a couple years ago before it was “ready”. When I tried to set up for alerts again on the app it says “contact support.” When you try to get app support the web site does not respond. I tried to set up the email again but when you click it the screen shows a place to type the email but it is frozen and the screen doesn’t respond to touch at all. I have an iPhone 11 so it should work since it’s the latest phone. Great idea, especially here in California but unfortunately it’s worthless if you can’t set it up to work.

**Developer response:** App is not abandoned! Please delete and reinstall. It sounds like you may have a really old version of the app. Alerts are now open to all and are working for seismic events across California.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2020-04-22, version 3.1*

This app doesn’t work all I have my location turned and it still says to enable it . On top of that it doesn’t show RECENT eartherquakes like for example I just had one a few seconds ago && GUESS WHAT ! the app didn’t warn me nor it showed me where it happened. Such a disappointment I wasn’t expecting more since I waited so long for the app.

### 1/5 — No critical alerts for iOS

*2020-02-21, version 3.1*

Without ‘critical alerts’ functionality for iOS, this app is useless at night if your iPhone is on silence or do not disturb. ShakeAlertLA does offer this function. Will use it over this one until this is offered.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — No alerts yet thank goodness but good app

*2021-05-06, version 3.2.2*

A suggestion - can you add two features:

- Notifications of quakes around me that are smaller than 3.0. I keep an eye out for swarms and this would be a nice feature for geeks like me. It’s not the urgent alert mind you - just a notification that appears on the Lock Screen similar to a new email

- Fault line maps - an option to switch to a map that shows the major fault lines (eg San Andreas, Newport Inglewood)

### 5/5 — Life saving app

*2020-09-19, version 3.2.2*

The 2-5 seconds heads up this app gave me could mean life or death if a larger quake ever struck. This was the second quake I’ve experienced and it’s notified me both times. Amazing!

### 5/5 — Life saving Quake App.

*2020-07-30, version 3.2.2*

So glad someone FINALLY brought this technology to the masses—-for free! This is not your average quake app with tons of annoying alerts, this one is meant to save your life. In the event of a quake, it alerts you ahead of time before the shaking starts. This gives you valuable seconds to get in a safe place and prepare. Highly recommend this app for you and all your loved ones.

### 5/5 — It worked!

*2020-07-30, version 3.2.2*

I got an alert from the quake in Pacoima last night, telling me shaking would start in 5 seconds! So cool that this worked. (I did not get an alert from my other more local earthquake app, so this one came out ahead.)

I only wish I could set this app to break through my Do Not Disturb and Silence/Vibrate settings. But I think that’s Apple who hasn’t provided that option, I don’t think there’s anything the app developers could do about it.

### 5/5 — Worked great this morning

*2020-07-30, version 3.2.2*

App alerted & woke me up this morning during the beginning of the earthquake. If it was a bigger quake, it would have helped me be awake & alert. Let me know it was an earthquake that woke me up this morning, very reassuring. Thanks!

### 5/5 — New Update has Quake List

*2020-07-14, version 3.2.2*

Got an alert in the last quake. It bypasses silent now which is cool.

### 5/5 — Update added great feature

*2020-05-28, version 3.2.1*

Adding the critical alert feature vastly improves the value of this app. This is the only app I’ve seen address this important need.

### 5/5 — Hopefully it works!!

*2020-02-09, version 3.1*

I really want to see if this app does work or not! But most likely from how long it was worked on hopefully it works as intended!

### 5/5 — Amazing App

*2020-01-29, version 3.1*

Real time alerts when there is a quake nearby. This is the app I always wanted. 10/10

### 5/5 — Amazing App

*2020-01-22, version 3.0.1*

If you’re downloading this app in 2020, don’t worry about the review saying it doesn’t work or they’re having problems. The app is now available to the public. All you have to do is download, sign up with your email and choose what magnitude & up you want to be notified at. There was a 3.6 earthquake last night in granada hills and this app alerted me. I’m very pleased with app and recommend all to download! Literally a lifesaving app!
