### 3/5 — Potentially great, but still crashing

*2023-12-15*

I’d use this app a lot more if it didn’t keep crashing on me (standalone), particularly annoying when trying to save a preset I’ve spent time creating. Also when modifying a bundled preset, it won’t allow me to save it to the user folder.

Lots of potential here, but the crashing is really off-putting.

### 4/5 — Finally working after update and a great app

*2023-03-20*

This is a great app and does what I want for granular. However the audio import feature which is a massive part of the app, doesn’t properly work. I emailed the devs about this but no response. I’ve since read on forums that others have reported the same problem and also had not response. What happens is, when you select audio to import, the app freezes. There is a workaround where you can minimise the app and then go back into it, and then you can navigate to your audio. The app will then freeze again but you can again minimise the app, go back into it and finally complete the import. So overall I’m glad I bought the app and am happy with it, but I will be careful before anything else from Audio Damage. Edit this problem appears to have been fixed in an update so adding a star.

### 3/5 — No way to save my patch?

*2021-10-07, version 1.1.10*

Really fun but always crashes and I lose my complex patch.

### 3/5 — No midi support

*2020-10-02*

I like the app but the fact that it’s impossible to sync at least the speed or the length of grains to any incoming midi clock is surprising and kind of a deal breaker :/

### 3/5 — Amazing before it explodes

*2020-09-14, version 1.1.10*

I’m not one typically to write reviews about an app, but I’m hoping someone will read this and it will save them from experiencing the same headache I’ve had with this app. I want to preface this by saying this synth is an AWESOME granular synth, it has great modulation built in and the sound quality is comparable to some of the $300+ plug ins they make for desktop computers. That’s not the issue with the program.

The problem is stability. I’ve been using it as auv3 in BeatMaker and have experienced it crashing EVERY time I have it in a project I’m working on. To make matters worse, it doesn’t just crash BeatMaker - it corrupts whatever project I loaded it in to, leaving the project destroyed. I’ve lost weeks of work from this app, which is heartbreaking because I’ve really enjoyed it when it’s working.

I really hope this is addressed in future updates because the app is unusable for me in this state, but I’m still giving it 3 stars for the things it does do.

### 4/5 — Usually I have nothing but trouble to report...

*2020-07-25, version 1.1.10*

I am finally satisfied with a granular app that works and sounds good. I especially liked the email that went out this morning from Audio Damage telling me about the free Soundpacks I could get to load into the app. They sound great and I take back some of my gripes I have using your apps... just some since I still have unresolved issues with the other apps I emailed the Dev about.

I highly recommend you get this app even if you are running the other granulars out there. It helps to have options and more range in your musical toolbox.

### 3/5 — The piano keys covering control knobs

*2020-05-13, version 1.1.2*

On iPad Pro 11. The on screen keyboard covers up some of the controls to where you can’t see what all is down there (grain controls). It’s driving me bonkers.

Other than that, seems like a great app and good sound. Just driving me nuts not to know what else there is to adjust. I can’t stop messing with it.

Edit - I’m also getting lots of crashes where the app just shuts down when trying to import samples. No audio share? Cmon guys!

### 3/5 — Excellent Granular Engine, Needs Better Usability

*2019-06-01, version 1.1*

The audio engine itself is fantastic, an excellent granular synthesizer with lots of controls to dial in a sound.

I feel it’s lacking some usability for iOS.

Currently to use any of the samples in the factory presets in a custom preset, you need to find a preset with a sample you’d like to use, modify it, and save as a new preset. There’s no way I’ve found to use any of the factory samples in a preset made from scratch, nor can any of the factory presets have their sample swapped for that of another factory preset. It’d be very nice to have the factory samples available in a sample loading menu with a separate option to load from the iOS Files dialog, or have Quanta present its own location in Files and download the factory samples there.

Secondly, it would be very nice to be able to scroll through the presets list without touching to scroll on a preset instantly loading that preset. Technically you can do this via the scrollbar on the right side, however it’s quite thin and easy to miss, and on a touch interface, scrolling by sliding over the list of presets feels much more natural.

Overall it’s a good port of a really great desktop application without acknowledging the little details that would make it FEEL excellent on a touchscreen device.

I do have a two feature requests. A glissando option for the keyboard (rather than pitchbend only) would be choice.

Also it would be incredible if Quanta could receive and process other audio. While AUv3 imposes limitations on recording input audio, being able to use it as a granular effect on a rolling buffer of input audio would be sooooo good.

### 4/5 — Audioshare for loading samples

*2019-05-10, version 1.0.19*

Please make it possible to upload samples from audioshare thanks

### 3/5 — Can’t turn off MIDI inputs

*2019-03-23, version 1.0.19*

I’m really enjoying this app so far. Really unique and fun to play. However, I've run into a little issue... I often run multiple iOS music apps simultaneously — some of which send MIDI to my computer over a network connection. In these situations, Quanta is automatically picking up the MIDI notes being transmitted on that network connection (which I don't want).

In Quanta, I went into Settings > I/O Settings, and attempted to turn off all "active MIDI inputs." However, it will not allow me to uncheck any of the boxes to disable them. They just immediately re-check themsleves. Any idea why this might be happening? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

### 2/5 — Crashes with ble midi

*2019-02-28, version 1.0.19*

Great app but it crashes every once in a while on my iPad Pro 2018 with my BLE MIDI connected, and lose all the work! Please fix this.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Crashing all the time

*2024-05-06*

contacted developer in OCt 2023 regarding fix but was told they will be looking into it. Still waiting, waste of money !! I would rate this minus 5 if i could - not worthy of a star

### 1/5 — Sample import broken

*2022-09-19, version 1.2.2*

Sample import appears to be completely broken, which for a plug-in that relies mostly on samples, is a big deal. I’ve tested the standalone version, as well as the AUv3 version in GarageBand and Cubasis 3. In each, tapping the file import icon will cause Quanta to immediately become unresponsive. I contacted Audio Damage customer support, but never received a response. It’s a shame, because I generally like Audio Damage products. I own the VST version of Quanta and was excited to see it available for my newly purchased iPad. Hopefully this will eventually be fixed. For now, at least I can import presets that I’ve made with my VST version.

Update: Sample loading is still broken on iPad OS 15.7 even after the 1.2.2 update.

### 1/5 — Incomprehensible

*2020-12-06*

I have a few granular synths, and this is the only one I regret buying. No help function, and the few YT demos out there are of an early version which has a different interface. Any attempt to import a file results in the app crashing. The App Store blurb invites one to “Visit audio damage.com for a PDF manual, audio samples and video demonstrations”- no, no, and no. Deeply frustrating and to all intents and purposes useless.

### 1/5 — Developer support non-existent

*2020-05-28, version 1.1.2*

Some of the factory presets distort. No response from developer as to how to correct this distortion. There’s no indication that the app will take 3.7GB when fully installed with the developer files. Most of the factory presets sound like insects.

### 2/5 — Keeps crashing

*2023-11-05*

Hope the devs update the app to keep it from crashing any experiments I do keeps crashing

### 2/5 — Great if it worked

*2022-11-15, version 1.2.2*

I’m having the same issue as others. Trying to load a sample freezes the app.

### 2/5 — fantastic granular synth but loading samples is borked

*2022-10-10, version 1.2.2*

as in the title.
bringing up import sample menu stops entire app.

### 2/5 — Regular crashes

*2022-09-02*

I’ve tried reinstalls, etc but Quanta crashes every time I try to import my own audio file. And seems to also crash when I press the grain direction button.

### 2/5 — Freezes when I try to load a sound from files

*2022-07-11*

Please fix this

### 2/5 — Please fix sample tuning!

*2022-04-19, version 1.1.10*

If you use your own samples this is a pain to work with. Sample tuning has two controls. Main tuning and fine tuning and they both tune to cents! That makes absolutely no sense!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Favorite granular synth

*2023-08-25*

It’s capable of so much . Thank you

### 5/5 — So good…

*2022-11-20*

….I ended up buying the desktop version as well.
One of the best granular synths available, bar none.

### 5/5 — Great synth, welcome update

*2022-09-20, version 1.2.2*

It is always good to see AD releasing work for mobile devices, and good as well to hear news about laptop/desktop formats. Those should not be, at this late date in computer history, separate categories. Computers are computers, and the questions are which UI, OS, and processor standards to target for a given software product. Increasingly, mobile platforms dominate actual computer use, yet tech companies insist on hamstringing mobile systems to preserve broad use of multiple platforms that are not fully compatible.

Aside stated, my joy at AD embracing at least Apple mobile - and my happiness about this new update to a key granular synth for musician pads - took a blow recently when I read of the release of the developer’s latest synth. Apparently, AD feels their new synth release is too complex for PadOS. Maybe the story is more that it would be too much of a hassle to port the synth to mobile, given the low prices and high expectations in this market segment.

I hope users of mobile AD products can convince the developers to stick with us and to offer us the full range of AD software.

In the meantime, I’ll be tucking into this update. If you haven’t yet bought Quanta and you happen to have read this odd nonreview, you are the type of person who should just buy the synth.

### 5/5 — Updates with expanded factory presets

*2020-03-16, version 1.1.2*

### 5/5 — Love it

*2019-09-19*

Great sound, nice to play with and lots of depth to spend time on.

### 5/5 — Great app just went stella

*2019-05-31*

Its always been so much fun to use but the latest updates make the sound so much smoother, you know, if you like smooth granular. It is still possible to get grainy granular if thats your thing.
Thanks AD for continued support for the poor cousins of the music world. One day we will buy your desktop products we promise.

### 5/5 — 5 star but..

*2019-04-06*

User sample imports do not work !
