## What is Quaternion Julia Raytracer?

Be a virtual sculptor and create your own personal art in just seconds. Then use it as a background image to impress your friends. Play with the parameters to create an unlimited number of exciting 3D shapes. You can make the sculpture shiny by selecting an environment that will be reflected on the object.

Quaternion Julia Raytracer is the first real-time raytracer for the IPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. It renders the quaternion Julia fractal with high accuracy. By modifying the fractal parameters, an unlimited number of complex shapes can be generated.

Fractals are self-similar mathematical shapes in complex space. Just like the traditional Julia fractal, a quaternion Julia fractal is computed as stable complex points of a iterative funtion in complex space. However, 4 dimensional complex numbers, so called quaternions, are used instead of 2 dimensional complex numbers. This app uses the graphics chip of the IPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 to compute a 3D slice through the 4D complex space of the quaternion Julia set by raytracing using OpenGL ES 2.0 shaders.

Double/Triple tap and drag the finger horizontally or vertically to change the shape of the quaternion Julia fractal. You can also set these constant in the Settings tab. The Settings tab also allows to enable an environment that is mirrored on the Julia set. The accuracy of the fractal surface can also be set here. If you have red-cyan glasses available, you can see the fractal with real depth by enabling stereo mode.

A one finger drag rotates the camera around the object, a two finger pinch is used for zooming and a three finger drag translates the camera. You can hide the tab bar to create a screen shot. Double tap to bring back the tab bar.

!!!! Important announcement !!!!
To take a screen shot, hold down the home button and then push the top button. The screen will flash and the resulting image will be placed on your camera roll. From there, you can sync it back to your computer, e-mail it to friends, or do anything else you can do with any other photo in your camera roll.

Excellent art app

### 5/5 — Amazing! Just one request...

*2014-09-17, version 1.73*

This app is so cool! I love the flexibility, and the options. So unique and awesome! However, I would love an option to export the fractal as a 3d vector, so I could take into other programs and edit it from there. Aside from this one little request, everything about this app is perfect!

### 5/5 — Amazing

Wow, what a truly beautiful app. With so much customization and simple design it's easy to get lost in the creation of these shapes! I love messing with the custom environments

### 5/5 — Beautiful!

I just love this application. Imagine you have a cube. Now, line each of the 6 inside surfaces of the cube with images of your choice. Then, create a reflective fractal in the middle of the cube. Now, imagine that the walls of the cube are translucent and you have great lighting from the outside. Have the cube all set up? Want to set the constants which control the shape of the cube? Start with all four constants set to 0.0, this will create a sphere shaped fractal. Now, pick your view point into the cube. Let's say you poked a pin hole in the top of the cube and peeked in from outside. What would you see? You would see the the sphere reflecting the top image and all four side images. These would be a mirror image of the images on the walls. You would also see the the part of the bottom image that the sphere was not obscuring. Want a different view? Poke a pin hole into the cube somewhere else. In the app, instead of poking pinholes, you change your view point with a single finger drag across the screen. What the all white image you created to be on the bottom or the sphere? Roll the sphere over top of the white image. Use the two-finger pinch to zoom in and out. You save the image to your camera roll by taking a screen shot. Press the power button and the home button at the same time. Some notes: I prefer the uncomplicated fractals created by setting the Accuracy slider to a value of 2. The fractal is then a less complex shape that reflects the cube walls nicely. This version of the app has a problem in that the rendering is restarted automatically whenever you tilt the orientation of the iOS device and also when you receive an alert message. So, if you are using Instagram and are extremely popular, you may want to disable notifications until you are done rendering. I also suggest that you turn off Antialiasing until you have the image setup the way you want it for your final render before taking the screen shot.

### 3/5 — There is no save or email

*2010-09-04, version 0*

A huge problem with this otherwise really impressive app is that you cannot save the wonderful pictures you create or email them. I would give this 5 stars otherwise. Also , suggest that the stereo mode include either/both cross-eye or divergent so that I don't need glasses

### 5/5 — Quaternon Julia

*2010-05-24, version 0*

Very interesting shapes can be made very quickly. As with Mandelbulb & iGPUtrace features several full sphere background images and many other features that I haven't scratched the surface with them. Also has antialiasing. Get em all you won't be dissapointed.
