It is a great way to work on their language needs. ### 5/5 — Love it! *2011-05-15, version 1.4* I have used this app very successfully with my 3rd graders and 2nd graders diagnosed with learning disabilities. We do a mini-lesson about the different type of question words they'll see: how, why, when, where, what. They practice reading through the answers. I would like for the app to also have the ability to read the answers aloud, because the question is read aloud. As an added bonus, the fun character who pops up once the student gets the answer correct encourages the student and gives them a laugh! I have noticed a few glitches when the student does choose the correct answer and the app tells them to keep trying. It doesn't happen all the time. ### 4/5 — Used in speech therapy *2011-02-14, version 1.3* As a Speech-Language Pathologist it has been difficult to find apps that actually works on language concepts. For the past two months I have been using the mobile education applications, sentence builder, story builder and question builder. These apps have helped my students work on multiple concepts such as story sequencing, sentence formation, grammar, answering “wh” questions and even articulation. Since these apps allowed the students to record their responses, I’ve incorporated language and speech goals into one lesson. I can have my artic students monitor for correct speech production, and my language students monitor their grammar. The best part about it is that the students are allowed to play back the stories or the sentences and we discuss the errors they made. It always becomes a teachable moment. My favorite part of the sentence builder and question builder apps is the data collection. The apps allow you to choose the level of prompting for each student allowing me to cater to each student’s individual needs. One of my students was so excited about sentence builder that his parents called me to get the name so that they could purchase it. Overall, these are great apps to use with children with language delays and have been extremely useful for my students with Autism. The immediate reinforcement the students receive after answering questions really helped them to stay focused. I would recommend these apps to any educator. Would have rated 5 stars if the possible answers were read aloud for those children who have lower reading levels but higher cognitive abilities. Hope an update with this additional setting option will be coming soon! ### 5/5 — Question Builder for iPad *2011-01-04, version 0* This App is AMAZING!! It makes owning the iPad worthwhile for me. My six year old son with autism, who was horrible trouble processing "wh" questions LOVES THIS!! He of course finds "how" and "why" the hardest. First time on he practiced "why" questions for 40 minutes! He also was very successful with it which makes him really enjoy it. He is going to be conversing in no time and finally asking ME the questions<3 ### 4/5 — Question Builder... Good app *2010-12-24, version 1.3* I am a speech pathologist working with preschoolers. The app is suited to the elementary school kids due to the reading involved. It worked well with the preschoolers once I adapted it to my needs. I had to be a bit more lenient in accepting answers, which made the scoring tool less helpful. Unfortunately, they did not it if I read the answer choices to them... too much overload. The pictures are great with just the right amount of distracting elements to work with those kids who do not focus on the question being asked, but rather on other parts of the picture. It allowed me to focus them and work toward decreasing tangential answers. I would have given 5 stars, but I did not love the verbal and picture reinforcements. ### 4/5 — Great app *2010-12-12, version 1.3* I'm a speech therapist and use this app with my students with autism. They love it. I find that it's a great reward in therapy. They love the reinforcing voice when they get it right and they have no problem spinning the answer wheel. It's a great educational tool to support language fundamentals. He is really successful with this app and that builds his confidence. I wish the applause can be less distracting by just clapping, sound and visually echo the answer so it will imprint in the autistic student to help them build answer or intraverbal skills. Also if we can have the options to hide other icons such as info, setting so the kid won't interfere with the learning session. To perfect this, you can program so user can just answer by touching on answer repeatedly instead of rolling then tap a separate box of select...great work anyway.. Thanks T Nguyen MD ### 5/5 — playful app improves reading comprehension *2010-10-18, version 0* What I like best about this app is that the questions are designed such that the child really has to think about the BEST answer since the other answers could also be correct. If a wrong answer is selected, the narrator says encouraging words like "you'll get it next time." In some scenes goofy animated characters appear to positively reinforce getting an answer right, by saying things like "awesome." The students are very engaged in this app. I target wh-questions by making them say their answer before they can look at the choices. My students LOVE the animated reinforcement! This app can target wh-questions, vocabulary, and syntax with SLP guidance. I highly recommend this app! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Horrible app, poorly worded questions *2014-03-14, version 1.9* I am extremely disappointed with this app. I have been very pleased with Conversation Builder and was hoping for another quality app with Question Builder. Most of the questions have very little to do with inference, but focus more on counting (how many children, leaves, apples, etc. are in the picture). One picture shows a partially exposed alligator in a river. The question is, "where are the other alligators?". I would infer that the other alligators were in the river as well, however the correct answer is, "I don't know". There are questions where clearly incorrect answers are 'correct'. For example, one question asks how many red flowers are in the picture. The answer is "2" but there are NO red flowers in the picture. Another question is, "Where did the kids get their lunches?". The "correct" answer is that they were packed by their moms, however, the child is clearly eating a school lunch with hot food on a tray. Yet another question asks, "where did the tomatoes learn to sing?" (yup, singing tomatoes). The answer is not at school or in the garden, but "from their teacher". Additionally, there are grammatical and spelling errors throughout (sandals are spelled "sandels", etc. ). Do not waste your money, this app will only frustrate you and your children/students. ### 1/5 — Poor pictures, awkward handling *2010-06-03, version 0* I thought this would be better, to be honest. I am a speech language pathologist who works with many language impaired children working on wh questions. The voice is monotone. The images are a bit crude. The dial to select the answer is hard to handle. Overall, I would pass on this app until it can be improved. ### 2/5 — Interesting App... *2013-03-26, version 1.8* While the app does what it says, asks questions to students and help them create meaning/comprehension... I feel like the voice is pretty monotone and the entire thing is not very exciting or engaging for children. "When and Who" are two types of questions that are very important for children to know. Awesome app! Thank you. ### 4/5 — Very good *2013-07-29, version 1.9* As an elementary school English as a second language teacher, I find that many of Mobile Education Stores' apps are great! I use Question Builder because the students must think critically in order to choose the correct answer to a question supported by a colorful picture on the screen. I like that the question choices include plausible, but incorrect answer choices. You can raise or lower the level of difficulty in the settings menu. One thing that is missing however, is the option to have the iPad read the answer choices. The questions can be read aloud, but students must be readers to choose an answer, making this app unusable as a listening comprehension game for young students who are not yet able to read. When the students correctly answer, there are some funny animated characters that come out and cheer for them. Likewise, there are words of encouragement if they answer incorrectly. The app has a statistics page so you can monitor the students' progress. One problem I have with the app is that you cannot go from a sentence that you are building to the settings or statistics page until/unless you correctly build the sentence. This creates unnecessary hassle if you want to quickly check-in on a student's progress or change the difficulty. ### 4/5 — good but not complete *2012-01-30, version 1.5* This is a great application . i can call it TOEFL for kids but just one missing option . I know that teaching children to ask and answer questions can be very difficult. One thing I would love to see added to this app is the ability for the child to record their own voice with the correct answer. Goes right through to simple inferential comprehension. Question and answer voice is male and quite flat, but that is good for kids struggling with language - no distraction trying to decode variations in pitch, tone or volume. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Nice app for questions and syntax *2013-03-13, version 1.8* This app is great for answering questions, but also, working on answering in a complete sentence. I agree with one of the other reviews in that this app requires you to pay attention to the question to make sure you answer appropriately. One in particular is a picture of a girl and a snowman and the question is, "What are the snowman's arms made of?" So many kids automatically say snow and I have to remind them to listen and I repeat the question. After that they do a much better job of listening and focusing on what exactly was asked. It would be nice for non readers if like in Conversation Builder Teen you had a way to hear each sentence by pressing a button. I understand that would be a lot of work so it may not be possible or at least not happen for some time. Also, two things I noticed in the What section, the girl looks like she is wearing a pink dress not a red dress as the answer states and the girl in the wheelchair picture has the answer of "There is a piano is in front of her". The best feature for me is the data keeping feature. I like that you can what type of questions you can work on. It is an easy app to use that doesnt require prep time. The reward features are entertaining. This is a fun app that helps my students work on this skill. My daughter is Autistic and it has really helped her. It helps her to look at the pictures and ask the correct question. She loves the characters that praise her when she gets the correct answer. Great motivation! It has helped her to ask and answer questions better in conversation. Excellent app! ### 5/5 — Must Have App for SLPs *2011-10-28, version 1.5* I have been using Question Builder for almost eight weeks with a handful of students in speech services. They are engrossed in the app and do not even realize they are working. With all of the emphasis on data driven decision making in schools today I love that it provides me with feedback on the students progress.
