A place where you can hear each other. Quiet Spaces rates restaurants, cafés and bars on whether you can hear the person across the table, using ratings and decibel readings from people who sat there. FIND OUT BEFORE YOU GO • A map of venues, color-coded by how easy it is to hold a conversation • Every venue page opens with the answer that matters: how many visitors could hear the person they came with • Filter for Crystal clear or Comfortable rooms, or see what's quiet right now • Venues nobody has rated yet show an estimate, always labeled as an estimate THE DETAILS THAT DECIDE IT • Patio, booth, bar and main floor are rated separately, because they don't sound the same • Each venue shows its quiet time of day, and about when it ends • Decibel readings come from visitors' phones, measured the way a real sound meter measures CHECK A ROOM YOURSELF • The noise check listens for a few seconds and shows the room as a ring of smoke: calm and blue when quiet, warm and churning when loud • It also reads how steady a room is. Some rooms are loud but even; others swing between quiet and loud, which is harder for many listeners than volume itself • Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded. Sound is analyzed on your phone and thrown away; only the number is kept, and only if you attach it to a rating • Quick Rate is one screen and about thirty seconds WHO IT'S FOR This app is for people who can hear an entire room except the one voice in front of them: people who are hard of hearing, who use hearing aids or cochlear implants, who process sound differently, and autistic or ADHD listeners. It was built by one person who spent years nodding along to conversations he couldn't follow. The map is young, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. A venue with no ratings says so. Every rating you add gives the next person a real number instead of a guess. ## Version history (last 5 releases) ### 1.2.1 — 2026-07-28 Venue pages now open with the answer you came for: how many visitors could hear the person they were with. • The noise check now tells you how steady a room is, not just how loud. A steady room can be tuned out; one that swings around can't. • Quick Rate is one screen: three questions, about thirty seconds. • New in Profile: reduce motion in the app, honored everywhere. • Map filters now use the same words as the venues: Crystal clear and Comfortable. One line, swipe for more. • Plainer wording and better screen reader support across the app. ### 1.2.0 — 2026-07-27 A whole new look. • Redrawn in glass — surfaces that catch the light and pick up the colours behind them • The buttons on the map now bend the map as you move • Dark mode is deeper, and easier on the eyes at night • The app follows your iPhone's text size, so if you've made text bigger, it finally listens • Toolbars step out of the way while you scroll and come back when you need them • Plus a handful of small fixes ### 1.1.3 — 2026-07-26 Tap a pin, and the place comes to you. • Tapping a venue opens a card over the live map — score, distance, best seat — so you can weigh up two places without leaving the map • The map moves like a map: pinch zoom no longer snaps when you let go, and a flick carries • Swiping through the welcome screens follows your finger instead of jumping • Coming back from a venue returns you to the map you left, at the zoom you left it • Every control answers to a press now, and screens push and pop the way iOS does ### 1.1.2 — 2026-07-26 Sharper sound science, a map that keeps up with you, and a good deal more polish. • Noise readings are now A-weighted and energy-averaged — the way sound meters and acoustic standards actually measure a room. A venue’s number means more than it did. • The map loads venues wherever you’re looking. Pan to another neighbourhood, or another city, and it fills in. • Map pins no longer overlap. Score bubbles that used to stack into an unreadable pile now keep their distance, and anything that won’t fit is counted so you know to zoom in. • The noise check is alive before you start it — the ring breathes quietly at rest instead of sitting there as a flat circle. • The 10-second rating now works for places not yet in Quiet Spaces. Rate one and it’s added to the map. • After a quick rating you can add where you sat and how it sounded — or skip it.
